I finally have the kid scheduled for his shots. Oct 21 is the earliest appt I could find that fit into our schedule. He's previously had Moderna, but is scheduled for Pfizer (he's 5).
How are Americans getting out of Gaza? I know that as pixy0stix , mentioned they were advised to go to Rafah, which is closed. But is Israel not letting Americans exit into Israel? Maybe there is no feasible way to do this. I admit I don't really understand how/where Americans entered or exited Gaza prior to this.
To recap key updates this morning (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/10/13/israel-gaza-war-updates-hamas-palestine/):
1 - Israel has told Gaza residents to leave the northern half of Gaza. This area holds over 1 million residents. To help facilitate the message, Israel has dropped leaflets in the area. Hamas is urging residents to not comply, stating that the warning is psychological warfare only.
2 - A growing list of organizations that typically provide aid in war torn areas are saying unequivocally that Israel is committing international humanitarian law crimes. The orgs are also stating that they can't get aid into the area. Israel has demanded that such orgs leave Gaza.
3 - Egypt solidified it's message, and is allowing aid to mass along their corridor (Rafah border crossing). They have said that aid can't cross the border because Israel bombed the area and it is now effectively sealed. I haven't seen news on what is being done to open the area.
4 - The US is working to identify "safe zones" in Gaza. No word on how that is going.
I think the bigger problem is that even the “reputable” sources can’t be proven to be reputable since anyone can buy verification. The blue check mark used to assure you that a journalist was actually a journalist, for example. Now you have no idea.
Like who are these pundits being linked? Why should we trust them? And if you’re going to post something from X, at the very least, you should tell us why you’re quoting that random person and what makes them credible. Two of the X-es(?) in the other thread literally quoted Fox News and The Intercept as sources. Just share the Fox News link yourself at that point! Like we’re all supposed to know who Evan Hill, Ryan Grim and “FJ” are? For all we know, “Wesley Morgan” is a 16 year old who just drew a circle around Manhattan and called it #facts.
All of your references are to tweets I linked. I don’t know how you can’t understand the difference between a url link that’s just a bunch of letters and a article in a tweet with a headline showing and a picture and people are more likely to read.
Also if you’re worried about authenticity then ask?
And the tweet was from the Israel Air Force telling everyone themselves they dropped 6000 bombs. Nothing I have posted is unverifiable.
Having debated online for literal decades now, I can verify probably 90% of sources just from the link on my phone. Your tweets took me pulling out my computer and spending 10 minutes poking around, and I'm still not sure they're verified correctly.
I think we are all adults and can decide for ourselves if we feel a source is credible. Explicitly banning Twitter links but not say, fox news, seems like more effort than it's worth.
I was not inclined to blindly trust a random Twitter post even before Musk though.
I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't willing to put in the effort. We've never had anyone post a Fox link in earnest.
Was the US as a whole responsible for everything that Trump did?
Nope but where did I say the whole of Israel is responsible? There’s still more to it than a singular person.
This is what you're insinuating, and because you're new, it's really hard to read where you're coming from. Even if you're someone who we know and are here under a new name we (general) don't know that.
All of it is horrible. We can hold the innocent Israelis and Palestinians in our hearts at the same time. We can say Hamas is evil and Netanyahu is evil at the same time.
Why is it Hamas & Netanyahu? He might wish to be but he actually isn’t a dictator.
Was the US as a whole responsible for everything that Trump did?
I say No - we discontinue the use of Twitter/X links. It's harder for me, as a mod, to vet the sources as posted. I've never had to moderate source links since it's always been fairly easy to sort out the ones that are not legitimate/all out fake.
I would love to know what else people think Israel should do in response?
Speaking only for myself, I think Israel has every right to defend themselves, and absolutely should not and cannot let the barbarism of Hamas go unanswered. And I don't find bombing Gaza to be objectionable in and of itself; that is a sad part of war. It's the civilian targets and the additional steps taken to ensure the suffering of those trapped in Gaza that I find inhumane. And I completely agree that Hamas also has the blood of the Palestinian people on their hands.
Agreed, and I think most of us in this discussion would agree.
I knew what AJL meant. It was a shitty comment and I was pointing out that it was a shitty comment.
And wow to so many comments in here since then. I have never once justified the killing of innocent Israelis, in fact, I’ve condemned it numerous times. yet here are people justifying the killing of innocent Palestinians because it’s only “20%.” And no. The vast majority of Palestinians do not support Hamas. Nice attempt to continue to dehumanize Palestinians.
Wow.
And Gaza is controlled by Israel. The may not physically be in the land, but they control every aspect of life there so get your own facts straight in saying the people of Gaza have been free for years.
Unless you live in Gaza, have family there, or are in contact with civilians there, maybe don’t speak for them and report that they support Hamas and are free.
It wasn’t a shitty comment. It was an observation based on the sentiments being expressed. The ADL is unapologetically pro-Jewish and pro-Israel. Maybe it is a legitimate source but it is a heavily biased source.
It was shitty. She was asking, and you could have responded as above with the further explanation but chose not to.
What are you saying, and what do you mean, “probably not in this thread?”
A legitimate source is a legitimate source in any thread.
[
I *think* what she’s saying is that since the ADL has a pro-Jewish slant , it will be poo pooed by all the Palestinian support in a thread you started! I get that you’re impacted by this, but the large majority of Gaza Palestinians support Hamas.
Israel hasn’t owned or claimed control of Gaza since 2005. Giving them land, aid etc will not change the basic fact that HAMAS wants to kill all Jews. Israel doesn’t want to kill all Muslims. What is so hard to understand about this ?
I’m going to repost this. If you look at it, around 80% of Gazans support violence and killing Jews. Yes, it sucks for the 20% but how are You going to parce that out? Also, if the 20% who don’t support it don’t want to be in the crossfire - there are safe places for them to go in the meantime.
The link below is a compilation based on a multitude of reports by the Palestinian Centre for Policy and Survey Research (PPCSR) which is near the only reliable source for sentiment analysis in the area. Stats by various other organisations are in there too. All of the stats are sourced.
The very narrow scope of this conversation is that Israel is going to wipe Gaza off the face of this earth.
When the Israeli defense minister announced a full siege on Gaza, he said that Israel is fighting, quote, "human animals that will be dealt with accordingly."
As a reminder - X/Twitter posts are highly suspect at this juncture. Posts without context, links, or support have always been and should always be verified.
So the males think their resumes aren't going to be viewed negatively when they've crashed a female/nonbinary event? I'm having trouble seeing the rationale.
