We don't have any kids but we bought these for our two year old nephew and he loved them! He wanted to take them out of the package right away and play with them.
It is a story book with the lego duplo to build with it. There are three different ones so we got all of them for him.

DS's favorite gifts: Dinosaurs from the dollar bins at Target, train table that Santa brought and the 30-40 Thomas trains (yes, 30-40) that MIL gave him. It was seriously too much, esp b/c they were individually wrapped.
DD's favorite gifts: Ikea circus tent, Fisher Price doctor kit, Diego (from the TV show) beanie baby, and this toy ice cream kit.

My daughter is obsessed with the TV show, Jake and the Neverland Pirates. She wanted a Jake headband. I bought her a red and black tied dyed bandana for $4. She wore it all day.
Besides books, which are a perpetual favorite, he seems to really like this Barnyard Uno game my ILs got him. It's cool that he's at the age where we can start playing family games.
My DD LOVES that UNO game. She got it for her 3rd birthday in Oct, and we've payed it almost every day since.
Everything was a hit. Train board, Scout talking dog (leap frog), blocks, kids rolling suitcase, shoes, and a workbench with tools. He's seriously in love with Scout.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
I swore up and down that I wouldn't give DD the McKenna AG doll that was stashed in my closet.
But then Santa broug a bunch of AG accessories, and DD was so excited, but her bitty twin just didn't quite work well with anything. And she was being such a good sport "that's ok, I will just pretend for now, and then some day if I get a real AG doll, I will use them the right way". She was being so easy going and thrilled with what she *did* get, that the sucker in me couldn't hold back.
I put the McKenna box in her room, and waited all morning for her to find it. She was SO excited, and McKenna hasn't left her side since. Definitely her favorite present, and the look on her face was so worth it.
Other favorites were some PlayMobil sets, the Imaginext pirate ship and Chutes and Ladders
DS1 got a bunch of Disney Car stuff which he loved and DS2 got a bunch of Jake and the Neverland Pirate stuff which he loved. He also got a Fisher Price airplane which was a big hit.
They both enjoyed the Magnatiles but it's funny because I think they were a bigger hit with the adults yesterday. I left them downstairs and they all took a turn playing with them.
DS2 (2.5) loved the giant Thor lightening hammer, which was the only thing he asked Santa for. We threw in a Thor hat, and he wore it all day. He also loved his talking Woody doll.
DS1 (5) loved all the Lego sets he got (Harry Potter knight bus and a couple Star Wars sets). He thinks the Captain Underpants book set he got is the funniest thing ever and has asked us to read it nonstop.
Both kids loved the Hex bugs and habitat and Avenger action figures they got. And they were thrilled with some Nerf dart guns my FIL bought and handed out to all the kids without telling me, SIL, or MIL (we don't normally allow toy guns, so this was a first for them).
Squirms really likes this soft baby doll my mom gave her. She's really into feeling different textures right now so it's perfect as it's a mixture of velvety and satin fabrics.
