I had a friend over who grew up out of state. I asked her to get some more bottled water. She said sure where is it and I replied :
Down Cellar (which comes out like Down cellah bc I live in boston). She starts laughing and says "Wth is that. Down Cellah. That is crazy". She said "Down IN the cellar? Down IN the basement?"
She then went on to say its not like if someone asks you where you sleep you say "Up bedroom". I totally get it and when she explained it it made sense.
Anyone else (not from Boston or New England) say Down Cellah?
I wonder if its a RI thing? My parents grew up in RI and we live close to RI. Everyone around here says it. "Hey where did you put your washer and dryer" Down Cellar. Hmmm...
My family is all from Mass/RI so it is not weird to me. However if I said that my DH from TN (or anyone here in CO really) he would not know what I was talking about
yes. but you could speak jibberish with a boston accent, and i would just sit there and swoon.
hahah that is funny. When DH and I went on our honeymoon the other couples would just stare at us when we spoke. It was funny. I love the southern accents. ADORE them. But go too deep south and I can't understand them. My dh laughs at me because he has a good friend from the sticks of alabama and I can't understand a word that man says

I don't use it. Heard it in Pittsburgh (parents' friends and some relatives) and southern tier of NY ( I was pretty sure the MIL uses it) I double checked the NY part with DH. I normally get blank stares from him on some Pittsburgese. This time I got a don't know know what it means look - then He did ask if I was asking if he knew the real world use or the urban dictionary version.
Is like when people call the trunk of their car the 'way back'?
we always called the "way back" that little space between the last seat and the rear window in a station wagon or hatchback. Remember being able to bounce around back there when we were little? Stupid carseat laws!
I've never heard "down cellah." I think I'll start using it.
My sister and I took a 4 hour road trip to boston in the back of a hatchback Ford escort when I was 9. I got such a crick in my neck, haha.
