Hope everyone is making some fine progress again this week!
For me, it was one step forward, two steps back. The good news is I ran every day during Memorial Day Weekend - even though the heat made me struggle, I persevered. Monday was especially tough but I did it.
The bad news is I ended up in the ER yesterday morning with what I thought was heart trouble; I woke up early yesterday with unusual chest pains that I've never felt before. 8 years ago I had a bad heart scare and while they took many tests and determined my heart is perfectly fine, it's always in the back of my mind and scared me so much and my panic attack certainly didn't help either. It's not heart trouble and it's not blood clots (another thing I've been worried about thanks to my recent bloodwork results). The doctor couldn't say for sure what was up except that there might be inflammation in my ribs or just bad muscle cramps right around the heart area, but so far I've been testing out my theory that it might have been a lack of electrolytes. I sweated like I never sweated before on Monday and didn't bother drinking Gatorade or anything right after the run (4 miles in hot weather). Since yesterday's scare I randomly ate some of my Shot Bloks and so far, I don't feel twitching all over my body and I don't feel cramps anymore, but we'll see how it goes. I'll make it a habit to drink Gatorade every day this summer and especially during and after my runs. And while I want to avoid doing this all the time, I may run on the treadmill 1-2 times per week (I'll be doing 6 runs a week during training starting in a few weeks so treadmill work shouldn't hinder me too much and it might even be helpful for speedwork).
Just to be on the safe side, I didn't run this morning but I will run tomorrow and and continue to run often until marathon training starts on the 18th or so. I've still got my 10K a week from Saturday and now I'm kinda scared shitless of overexerting myself again; I really want to PR though because I've only run two other 10Ks in my life and both took me just over an hour to run; if everything comes together well, I should easily break an hour by at least a few minutes. But if the weather is really hot, maybe not and I might as well be safe than sorry (again). I feel like such a baby; so many other people run as fast as they normally do in hot weather and for whatever reason, I have a really hard time adjusting to this weather.
So yeah, that's been my glorious week. If you did not have to go to the ER this week, it's an automatic successful week for you! Anyway, I've been away from work for four days so I'll try and pop back in today when I can.
Taking safe over sorry =/= being a baby...it's smart! Sorry to hear you had such a scare yesterday but your plan sounds like a good one...and it reminded me that I need to be better about keeping Gatorade around the house for after a hot, yucky run. Hope you keep feeling better!
The heat wave we had here over the last week has NOT been particularly good for my running...I keep saying I need to get up earlier to run, but then the alarm goes off and I want to slep more Monday's run was my big "f this noise, no more running after 9am if its going to be hot" moment...I planned 6 miles, in 2 mile loops so I could swing by my house for some water and a minute in the shade (well, until the song playing on my iPod finished). Loop 1-no problemo. Loop 2 (different route than loop 1)-okay for the first mile, sucked on the way back so I took a couple of walk breaks. Loop 3 (again, different route than previous loops)-2 miles of SUCK SUCK SUCK. Lots of walk breaks and me swearing under my breath. The only good part about that run was stopping to pet a cute pit bull named Debbie.
Did I mention I started that run at 10am? BAD BAD BAD IDEA.
Thankfully, things are cooling off here this week (meaning we might get to turn the a/c off tomorrow!) so at least we're getting a temporary break from the heat. I got our veggie garden planted over the holiday weekend (better late than never, right?) so hopefully we'll have some yummy stuff to snack on before too long. I've been logging my food/exercise on MFP more often too, and I think the accountability is helping some (minus yesterday's pigout fest of course).
Now, I just need my damn bridesmaid dress to come in so I can make sure it doesn't need to be altered...

Scary, Marie! I'm glad you're OK. I hope the electrolytes were the culprit, since that's probably fairly easy to manage.
I'm still up to the usual. Running the morning, CF in the evenings. H and I did a Memorial Day Murph together in our garage on Monday. Murph is a CF workout that involves a 1 mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, and 300 air squats, then another mile run. We did it in 58:11. It wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I was seriously dreading it. Here we are after:
I'm maintaining my weight in the mid to high one-teens now, which is nice. My belly is gone, and once the flab comes off my inner thighs, I think I'll be really happy with my appearance. I'm fairly happy with it as it is, and don't dread the idea of a bathing suit, for the first time in many years. It's a weird/good feeling.
I've had a few crappy runs lately. I think I need to eat more before running, but that doesn't always seem to help. I keep getting this stabby cramp in my right side, like in my lung. If I squeeze it with my hand, it feels better, but I can only run so far like that. Felt good this morning though (had some caffeinated Sport Beans pre-run), so there's that.
I have my H&F-related job interview tomorrow at 5 and should find out whether I got the job by Friday. I'm really nervous and excited and hope that all goes well. It could really be a dream job, and I could be really good at it. Fingers crossed!
Scary!! I'm glad you're okay! And agree with lori, you're not being a baby, you're being smart.
Both H and I have been trying to eat relatively healthy lately - having salad every night for dinner and trying to eat more fruits and vegetables. Of course, he's lost 10 pounds and I've lost 2 lol. But he's also in much better shape than I am, and losing 2 pounds is better than none!

For serious. H started Crossfit at 155 pounds (6' tall) and within a month was at 150 without doing anything different besides the CrossFit. He was actually trying to GAIN weight.
Scary Marie! I hope you get things figured out but better to err on the safe side. Do you feel like you get enough rest and days off?
Katie-you look phenomenal! Rock that bikini!
My eating hasnt been the greatest but I am still losing. Im doing the board-wide Biggest Loser Contest and the last time I did it with my work group I lost 16 lbs and won the contest. Im hoping this is the perfect kick of competition to fuel me on.
Eeeek, Marie, that sounds scary! Glad to hear that you're okay.
Good luck on your interview, Katie!
Things are going well here, rascal-avoidance wise. I have a 5K next month that I'm prepping for, but have only been hitting the treadmill because it's ridiculously gross outside. My weirdo food sensitivity issues have really helped me as far as diet is concerned. Not wanting to feel like crap sure is motivation to stay away from the bad stuff! I've been "eating clean" and feel pretty great.

What is it with men? When I was in grad school, J gave up fast food and regular pop (both were huge parts of his diet so this was a big deal), started eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner (when he wasn't working) at home, and switched to diet pop...and dropped 25 lbs in less than 3 months. No working out, just a huge diet change. After I finished grad school, I found myself at a weight that I'd sworn I'd never hit and got my butt on the healthy living bandwagon real quick...it took over a year of working out 5-6 times/week and eating healthy to lose the same amt of weight. What gives?

Holy cow marie! Be careful! The summer can be brutal. Running at the crack of dawn is the best option for me, even though it sucks big twinkies.
Have you tried the margarita blocks? They have a little extra electrolytes in them or maybe it's salt? Either way, I mix them with the cranberry/raspberry ones and it keeps me balanced. Another suggestion I got from a EMT was to get a camel back and fill it with a lot of ice. It will help keep you from overheating.
I gained two of the three lbs I lost back over the weekend. However I did run all three days so that's a plus. I'm starting CrossFit next week.
Marie - I am so glad you are okay! I hope the extra electrolytes and being cognizant of that keeps it from happening again!
Katie - you look amazeballs! Do you follow the diet associated with most CrossFit people? Do you like doing CrossFit? My husband wanted to try it a few months ago, and I actually have considered it if we could do it at home/our current gym. I don't want to join a new gym at this point.
As for me, I'm mostly recovered from my surgery. Still some soreness at times, but I feel good and I am off painkillers (sadsies for me - painkillers are lovely). I didn't want to go back to working out or start my personal training sessions until I was off those, so that's good news. I have a f/u on Friday for my boobs, and I'm hoping my doctor will okay working out/starting my personal training sessions. I haven't had really any restrictions other than he recommended I wait until he okay'd it to start those things. In the interim, I've been sticking to my diet and getting that routine going after having guests here for about a week and a half helping and cooking.

Thank you! You guys are too kind.
I do not eat "paleo." I'm a vegetarian, and paleo is very meat-centric. Paleo also eschews grains, even whole grains like oatmeal, whole wheat flour, etc., as well as legumes and soy. I adore lentils, tofu, tempeh, whole wheat pasta, bread, and basically all grains, and I can't bring myself to eat meat or fish (tried recently...it ended badly), so I'm still eating the same as I was before. The only thing I've really changed in my diet since starting CrossFit is drinking at least one protein shake a day (chocolate whey protein...1 scoop = 20 g protein, 95 calories). Been trying to get in at least one salad a day, usually at dinner.
I really like CrossFit, and it's been really good for me. I was doing boot camp before, and I was one of the best at boot camp. I'm one of the worst at CrossFit, and it's really motivational. One of my fellow CFers just dead lifted 365 the other day...it's the new women's record at our box. I can barely deadlift my own weight. If you guys are interested in doing CF at home, I would definitely do a few months at a box to learn workouts and movements, and then maybe transition to doing it at home. We have rings and a pullup bar in our garage, and are planning on getting a bar and plates, plyo boxes, maybe a rack/stand, some kettlebells, and maybe some more dumbbells and a medicine ball or two (usually women use a 14-pound ball and men use a 20-pound ball). With that equipment, you can do almost all CrossFit stuff, but I do think it's important to learn how to do it all correctly.
Marie, that's so scary - I'm glad you are ok! Definitely be careful in the heat, it sucks so bad. I hate working out in the summer.
Katie, you look amazing.
I had a pretty good week, until I got to my swim/bike brick workout on Monday. Usually I would do a rest day the day before, but this time I didn't. Instead, Sunday I swam almost 3000m at practice, and then Monday did the brick. I left almost an hour later than I wanted to, which meant it was way hotter, and about 8 miles into the bike ride I bonked hard and ended up crying on the side of the road. I finished the damn ride (15 miles total) but the last 7 miles were pathetic as hell. Other than that, workouts have been good. I'm ready for my rest day tomorrow though.
I'm tracking my food daily again and it's made a huge difference.
I took my measurements again last week, and I've now lost 3 inches total off my lower body. My upper body is being more stubborn to catch up, but I was really excited about my lower body. People that haven't seen me recently are starting to comment on my weight loss, so yay! I'm waiting to get a new appointment scheduled with my nutritionist to touch base on everything.

Katie, you do look amazing!!!
I had a good rascal avoidance weekend. I ran a 4K on Monday in the heat. I was only a minute off of my time last year so I was happy. It was ridiculously hot. My time was 28:29.
I biked to the library yesterday (10 miles). I am so freaking slow. I really need my own bike and not DH's mountain bike. I like biking better than running and want to do more of it this summer. I actually want to do the triathlon that I signed up for last year and deferred because of the hurricane. It is a sprint distance and would be my first. It is very beginner geared. Foodwise, I am doing okay. I am having a hard time to remember to track but I am going to get on this. Still figuring out MFP.
I got a new scale, and now I can actually see what my weight is doing! I dropped a few pounds, and then promptly gained them back at a memorial day bbq, but was back where I started again by the end of the day monday. So yay for that!
One of our couple friends just bought themselves fitbits - the girls in our group have been wearing pedometers for a while now, but this was the first guy that hopped on the bandwagon. About 5.2 seconds later, MH wanted a pedometer too. So we went and bought some. He spent all day at the bbq walking in place and pacing and jumping up and down and then asking me how many steps I had so he could crow about having more. So a whole new source of motivation there from my strangely 12-year-old-esque husband! A typical day at work for me is barely 2000 steps, so I'm going to have to move my ass every single day to hit 10,000. I think it's a good goal.
But seriously - what sadistic fuck designed our bodies so that it can take me a week of careful eating and activity to lose 1 pound, but I can gain them all back in one day of not-so-insane eating. (I logged everything I ate and drank at that bbq and I was only at 2200ish calories. That's not "gain 2 lbs" food) I know at least some of it is just bloat from drinking - but I'm still calling shenanigans. calories in/calories out my fucking ass.

Finally think I have proper meals planned. I haven't worked out in a while so I will report back next week as to how that is going. Weighed myself for the first time and I was scuuured. I need a kick in the butt and need to lose about 15 pounds.
Oh also...I LOVE seeing you ladies on MFP whenever I sign in. Emily, your workouts are intense!
I love seeing it too! And thanks - I'm chalking it up to training for the duathlon. I'm telling myself I'll back off a little bit when it's over, but secretly I doubt I will. I kind of like the intensity.

FYI - My SIL dropped by my office with my youngest niece to surprise me and brought me Reece peanut butter cups, my all time favorite. Yup, I will be eating those for lunch along with my chicken and peas. But in trying to get better about tracking food, I'll enter them in MFP.

Sometimes accountability is soooo hard!
It's funny that you mention yummy candy...check out what one of my kiddos brought me earlier.
Do not eat the chocolate bars or marshmallows or graham crackers before you have the chance to make s'mores, do not eat the chocolate bars or marshmallows or graham crackers before you have the chance to make s'mores...gah, they're STARING at me. Torture.
Since I work in an outpatient facility and not a school, we run year round and don't follow a school schedule for anything (breaks, etc) so we don't usually get "end of the school year" presents so this was totally unexpected and SO sweet. Another one of my kids brought me a big yellow silk daisy during teacher appreciation week at her school, and one mom brings me full sized packages of cookies for Oreo's 100th birthday (Double Stuf...mmm...) and National Chocolate Chip Day (Chewy Chips Ahoy). With the edible presents, I say healthy eating be damned and just work out a little extra the next day (and try to save some for my sweets obsessed H who bitches because I never buy us cookies to have around the house).
Everyone is doing well. And ditto Wawa - I am so impressed at the number of calories Emily burns during each of her workouts according to MFP.
I do wear a heart rate monitor most days I work out, and what my heart rate monitor says is always less than what MFP tells me I'm burning. I'm not sure how MFP is doing their calculations, but I'm skeptical of them.

They seem a little off to me as well. MFP gave me mad calories this weekend and I don't think I earned them.
