Pregnant Texas teen sues parents to prevent them from forcing an abortion
The 16-year-old alleges her mother has discussed slipping her an abortion pill to kill the fetus. She’s seeking a restraining order against her father for the duration of her pregnancy.
A Texas teen is suing her parents to prevent them from forcing her to have an abortion against her will.
The 16-year-old girl, who hasn’t been named because she’s a minor, is about nine weeks pregnant, according to the lawsuit filed in a Houston court.
The teen claims she was physically assaulted by family members trying to coerce her to abort her baby, according to her lawyers at the pro-life Texas Center for Defense of Life. She was also forced to get two jobs and was kept home from school when she refused to abort, lawyers said.
The girl says her mother at one point “ invited the paternal grandparents to a bar for further discussion, where she suggested that she might slip her an abortion pill through deception,” the lawsuit reads.
Lawyers for the Texas Center for Defense of Life say the girl legally has the right to decide to keep her baby, despite the objections of her parents.
Lawyers argue that the teen is free to decide to keep her baby under state law and provisions of Roe Vs. Wade which gives women the right to make their own reproductive choices.
The teen lives with her paternal grandparents, who have agreed to help care for the baby, the lawsuit claims.
The teen’s mother remains deeply opposed to her daughter giving birth because “the two minor parents had no idea what it would do to their lives,” the suit reads.
In addition to preventing the girl’s parents from forcing the abortion, the lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order against the girl’s father while she is pregnant.

Part of me thinks this is terrible, because it's her body and her choice, but as a mother, I sure sympathize with these parents. I can't imagine how furious I would be if my daughter got pregnant at 16 with no way to support herself let alone a child, but insisted on having and keeping the baby.

I definitely don't believe in forcing an abortion, though I would have no problems with forcing the girl to get a job if she was going to bring another child into my house.

Yeah, I will reserve my thoughts until I hear about this from a place not called the Texas Center for the Right to Life.
The girl further accuses her parents of taking away her cell phone, taking her out of school, forcing her to get two jobs and taking away her car to 'make her miserable so that she would give in to the coercion and have the abortion,' the lawsuit said.
^o)
Booo hooo hooo mommy and daddy took away my cell phone and my car and I am MISERABLE!!!

No, that's who's representing her. Her lawyer is with the Texas Center for the Right to Life. Probably took her case pro bono for the publicity.

I'm pretty sure that slipping anyone an abortion pill (hey - we have those now?? - ) is battery under the law. Even Texas! and ditto on the LOL to the "Choice" Lawyer lady.

errr...yes? RU-486 / mifepristone. Only used for the first few weeks. Also used to push along early "missed" miscarriages.

Not sure if you were being serious there.
I thought RU-486 had *still* not been approved by the FDA. I know there is the morning after pill - a couple of BC doses - but thought RU-486 was still being held up.
eta: never mind- I see I was way wrong on RU 486. I can remember Al Gore bringing it up in the debate w/Bush a milliion years ago - but it says in Wiki that it was approved in 2000

Maybe I'm mixing up the numbers part of that with something else, but I really doubt my OB gave me something non-FDA approved to make me "abort" my missed miscarriage. Whatever it's called, it exists and is often referred to as the "abortion pill".
Yeah, how did the Right to Life group get her case? I have a feeling a teenage girl doesn't know how to flee to them for shelter and support.
She probably showed up to a "pregnancy center" sacred and mentioned that her parents really want her to abort, aka "kill her baby" and they took it from there.

Sure it is. But saying "I could put an abortion pill in your drink!' is not.

True. I just think the whole thing sounds far-fetched and the fact of battery adds to the absurdity.

Please. I didn't bother responding upthread to the OP because this is exactly where my mind went
Also, if we require parental consent for abortion, how about requiring parental consent not to get one? After all this is a helpless underage girl who can't make decisions about her own body, right?

True, but it seems like all of the information in the article comes from them or is directly from their suit... which was probably sent to the "paper" in a press release.

You can get an abortion in Texas???
And soozy, what's the "poor kid" part? Because her parents required her to do what a parent does rather than act like a kid? Isn't this what anti-choicers want? Personal accountability!!!

Yes!! The implication is that:
A. Parents can force her to have an abortion. B. That there are providers that would strap a teen down and force an abortion on her.
Abortions are not just available to those that want them, they can be forced on unsuspecting pregnant women........ It's the new anti-choice movement.
