(1) the default clothing for newborns is something other than onesies? *whiplash* (2) what are "sleepers" are those "footed pajamas"? They seem like more of a pain to put on/take off. Why would people prefer those to onesies for newborns? (3) Given the weather here, what do people here do for the first few months?
For us our daughter lived in pjs her first month. I didn't like pulling things over her head and just felt more comfortable using pjs. Plus she was born in December so it was cold and socks never stayed on so the footed pjs solved that problem.
(1) the default clothing for newborns is something other than onesies? Not for us. I did tons of onesies and pants in the beginning. As I said in my comment on the MMM post (just posted), we did have slightly special circumstances, but in general I do prefer onesie and pants as a default outfit. Kimono/wrap onesies (or Ts!) were my favorite for the earliest days, but E gained neck strength and head control pretty quickly. These and these were great. (Don't mind the name--the Disney Cuddly Bodysuits are my absolute favorite! They're great quality and come in awesome solid colors.)
(2) what are "sleepers" are those "footed pajamas"? They seem like more of a pain to put on/take off. Why would people prefer those to onesies for newborns? Yeah, they're referring to the footed PJs. Again, I gave my reason for not using them, but even in the first week when we could use them, I wasn't a huge fan. I did love jumpsuits (no feet) for one-piece dressing. If they snap or zip up the front, they're not too difficult to deal with. (3) Given the weather here, what do people here do for the first few months? This totally depends on the time of year. For us, with E born in October we did onesies and cotton pants. These booties once his feet were free (they do not come off and they keep the feet warm). Summer baby would be different somewhat; you want him covered (protected from the sun) but not too warm.

For the first month, onesies are easiest. They grow really fast in that first month, and you don't want a TON of NB clothes because it's just not practical. However, spit-up and poosplosions are common in that first month, so something easy to wash and change is best. But since you guys are due in summer, onesies are going to be just fine. You can always cover/warm baby up with a receiving blanket. Layering is also a good idea, because you can always take off a layer or add it back based on baby's comfort. Less is so much easier when they're teeny.
1. Onesies = undershirt but that's because of what I grew up with. 2. Footed sleepers are for bed at night 3. I know I'm not in Seattle but I'm still going to reply. We had T dressed in clothes from the day we went home during the day. Little dresses etc. If it was chilly out I'd put tights on her with her dress.
I'm one of those people that believe a baby should have actual clothing on during the as in not what she sleeps in at night.
The general rule of thumb is you dress baby with one more layer than you are comfortable in. Edmund lived in onesies and pants, and sleepers. My mom actually yelled at me for freezing him because I didn't have a onesie under his sleeper in the summer. It was hot and I was barely wearing shorts and a t shirt so there was no way I was putting a onesie under his sleeper.
i agree that onesies are under clothes.. because some one must have taught me that somewhere and it stuck.
i'm sure our babies will wear a lot of pant/shirt/jumper type outfits. i'm really not sure. i hate the clothes at most baby stores, especially if they ahve like little animals or cherries on them. i don't know why, i just prefer kids/babies to wear clothes like adults, but cuter/smaller obviously.

See I'm the exact opposite unless its a holiday or some other fancy event.

i figure, this way, i won't buy every little thing i see.

I am kind of the same way. I'm not a fan of any characters on clothes. I dont mind animals and what not on M's jammies but the rest of her clothes I prefer them to be without. As for little boy clothing I hate that most are sports themes like little boys can only wear sports theme clothes.

True. When Edmund was really little I hated shopping for him because boys clothes were ugly. Now they still have way cuter girls clothes out there than boys clothes. I actually don't buy too much because of that.
What I really can't stand are outfits that have sayings on them. For example "Daddy's little princess." "2 cute 4 words" "I'm adorable" "Mommy's little angel" etc. I really really do not like these things. However, it's nearly impossible to find Carters jammies or onesies that don't say at least something small along the upper right chest area so I've had to give in a little.
I just did a big Spring shop at Target online for 9 month clothes for Emmy. I got some ADORABLE stuff. I love target for cute cheap clothes.
msniq really hates the "ironic baby" text! Like this:
I always pictured dressing him/her in onesie with a shirt and pants/bottoms over it, or onesie with sleeper/pjs/etc., but not totally sure yet. I don't like noticeably branded clothes, sparkles, princess anything, or most sayings. I'm ok with mini grown up clothes and animals (but not so excited about cartoon animals).
