SueSue does not do mean nor snark on the boards. You can count on her advice. It comes from an intelligent woman with real life under her belt. She knows of which she speaks. And yes, if the underlying uses that caused the previous weight problem were never resolved, they could be showing their ugly heads in financial overspending. The root causes are the same. I accused Bricco of living in financial la-la land and so far have not been convinced by her posts that I am wrong. Time will tell. I DO want her to be successful and make the needed changes, however, the mindset to do so is just not there, yet, IMO.
I heard that after she hit her goal weight and celebrated at her WW meeting, she went straight to the casino AND started smoking snorting coke.
Of course she does not OWE us an update, but it might make her more accountable and help stay on her plan. Or - help identify the weaknesses in the plan. Much better than a plea for help 10 months from know with a worsening disaster.
Maybe the both of you can mutually benefit here where bricco can teach you how to spell on a monthly basis.
win/win = everyone's a winner in life, not just in money battles and spelling bees
Just wanted to throw out for when you set your budget since you said childcare would be XYZ "for the school year" - I've never found a place that will let you pull your kid out for three months without losing your spot and/or paying a re-enrollment fee. So, unless there are always lots of spots at your chosen daycare (which would be unusual for a quality place), you may need to pay for the full year even if you are off on summer vacation. Just FYI.
Also, lol that you would owe us monthly updates.
The daycare I am looking at does a "summer only" option, so I am hoping to negotiate something there as I know a few of my coworkers have done. Obviously, if they are having summer only clients, they would need the room (they charge more for this too) to take on more people in the summer. Even if we did need to keep the daycare in the summer, that would be okay. If that was the case, we'd probably both end up working summer jobs to make it "worth our while" at least until our debt is more reasonably managed.
My daycare has a summer only option too--- but there are considerably LESS kids in daycare over the summer than in the school year. To keep your spot, you need to pay for at least 2 days a week. So all the kids who have a teacher as a parent go 2x a week in the summer instead of 5.
Congrats on the weight loss- seriously an awesome accomplishment. I too am of the mindset that if you could discipline yourself how to lose weight and keep it off, you can do this. I'm just also of the mindset that waiting 6 months to TTC is a better idea- coming from a place of having a child and knowing how expensive they are.
The posts were not intended to be hurtful and if they were, I apologize. I do stand by my support of SueSue. Her track record in life and the advice given on the boards in the past give a great deal of credibility to what she has to say. Bricco's choices have gotten her into this mess.
Learn from the mistakes of others, you do not have to reinvent the wheel.

I'll just pop in and say H and I just started Mint last Sunday because we also want to get our finances in order, put way more in savings than we have, and get our retirement headed in a better direction. For the first month, we are simply tracking where our money goes, and then starting next month, we are going to decide which areas we need to cut in, where money might be better allocated, etc.
It has been eye-opening and we've only done it 9 days. I knew we were spending a lot on food, going out, incidentals, etc., but it's something else to actually SEE exactly where it's going and just how much stuff adds up. Even this week, we have tweaked in areas where we were overspending and we're on track to save an extra $85 just this week.
It can be overwhelming (and a little depressing), but tracking the spending and then setting up a detailed, specific budget can really, really help.
The only downside so far to Mint is that over the weekend, our transactions don't load on Mint until Tuesday. So H has started tracking weekend spending in Excel and then we update in Mint when they come through, just so we can see where we stand in real time all the time.

Just sayin'
Good to know! I think I like the idea of 2x a week anyway. I haven't gotten to the point of figuring out stuff to this level of detail, but that arrangement makes sense!
There are few things more luxurious than sending your kids to daycare and having the day to yourself. Getting to do that two days/week sounds perfect.
RE: finding a daycare that caters to teachers - it's a good suggestion, my SIL actually has her kid in one (her BF is a teacher and put her kids there first). The biggest issue they've had is the place is in-home and requires pickup by 5pm.
I am so happy for you & your family. Thank you sosososo much for posting an update. A million congrats.....and now, what's next on your financial plan?

Step 1 (literally set this up tonight after I set up the final payment): Set up recurring deposits to savings account to prevent need for using credit cards in the future.
Step 2: Begin contributing to 403b.
Step 3: Continue working on student loans.
You are killing it - love that. Recurring deposits into savings are second only to the magic of compound interest in terms of money awesomeness.
I love that you were able to accomplish this in under 3 years. That's so inspiring!
