WTF is up with kale, usually roasted or fried, as the new "it" food? Is this a Portland thing, or are you guys seeing this around the country. Everybody is all, "zomg! Kale is awesome!"
Kale's been an "it" food here for a while, and I think it tastes like ass. Everyone always raved about kale chips and when I finally tried some, I could not believe how stank my breath became.
I got my first CSA yesterday (I sent someone to pick it up and it was a clusterfuck) and KALE! dontcha know. As far as I know, you can only make kale chips or put it in soup. Not good for much...
Well. You can use it to make a good bed on which to put your salad bar, as I learned from my restaurant job in high school, LOL.

i had a blueberry and kale smoothie at the farmer's market the other day. it was like drinking mushed up, dirty blueberries. blech.
during the tomato blight a couple of years ago my CSA pushed bok choy HARD. WTF was i supposed to do with FOUR POUNDS of bok choy?? talk about the IT food for that year.
Kale made the rounds on food and health blogs a couple of years ago with all that kale chip crap.
I actually love kale, but not as chips or smoothies. I keep some bags of it in my freezer, pre chopped, and stir it into casseroles, soups, stir fries, etc. Its so nutrient rich and I like topping off recipes with an extra edge of greens where I can.

I like this idea! but can you taste a difference between it and if you used spinach?

I don't really think so, but then I tend to use it in really savory things. Like, a stir fry with lots of chinese 5 spice and teriyaki sauce or something. You're not really tasting much of the kale, KWIM?
Kale is a little sturdier than spinach, so you would want to cook it longer (spinach is delicate and more of an add-at-the-last-minute item just to get it to wilt)
It's fine. I'm not a big fan of cooked greens, but because it's heartier than other greens, like spinach, I like it better. Not as much as I like swiss chard, though.

Another non-kale person here, who had to give her CSA the smack down about it too. However, I had a kale salad with grapefruit and sunflower seeds at a friend's house a couple weekends ago and it was pretty good... I think I like it better raw than cooked.
I have gotten kale several times this year from our CSA, and I like it. I've only made kale chips with it, but I'm a fan of those. I can see how they would be easy to be mess up though.

It's in every other CSA box. We cook it like we do other greens and it tastes mostly like the other greens do to me, which probably means we're over doing the balsamic.
I would totally take pounds of bok choy, though. It's the only green BabyLiu will put in her mouth intentionally. She won't eat it, mind you, just suck off the sauce and chew it until it's gross. But I figure digestion starts in the mouth, so she's gotta be getting something out of it.
It was only 88 cents, so I bought some, for the first time, the other day. Made Kale chips with half of it. They were okay. I probably won't make them again.
There's someone on my FB who is CONSTANTLY posting about kale and how much she LOVES it and here's a picture of her AWESOME kale dish!!!! It's clearly because it's the trendy food to be into.
