I keep hearing mixed reviews on this book. So what makes it suck? I hear the writing style is horrible?
Take Twilight. Make the writing eleven million times worse and more awkward. Take Edward and Bella's fucked up relationship. Make it twelve million times more fucked up. Peddle it to suburban women everywhere. Make millions.

I will admit I never read a single word of a Twilight book. Is 50 Shades about vampires too? I'm not really into vampire books, although I've never given them a chance yet.
I like to read different genres so I am open to anything except non-fiction.
I just finished last book in the millenium trilogy and I really liked those. I switch back and forth between trying something friends recommend and 'easy reading' books like Jennifer Weiner, Sophie Kinsella, Nicholas Sparks, etc.
I most recently read Bringing Up Bebe. I loved it, but I have a kid and im obsessed with her not becoming a holy terror, so take that suggestion for what it's worth.
I'm getting ready to start One Thousand White Women. MIL and GMIL both say its excellent. We shall see!
ETA: the last book I read was Shanghai Girls. I enjoyed it, although I felt the ending was kind of incomplete.
I read One Thousand White Women last year and liked it too. There's a sequel to Shanghai Girls that I read a few weeks ago. It's called Dreams of Joy. It's probably one of the better books I've read this year.
Overall, I haven't read any great books this year. I haven't been reading as much as I usually do either. I feel like I'm in a reading slump and can't get out of it.
ETA: I've never read any Stephen King books, but I really want to read 11/22/63 since it's been raved about so much.
I just finished the whole Song of Ice and Fire series, which is exhausting but very good. I am not a fantasy/sci-fi person at all, but it's very well written and engaging. I generally read long historical fiction type books.
I'm currently reading The Art Of Racing in the Rain and can't put it down.
Don't read 50 shades of Gray. However, I highly recommend 50 Shades of Suck on tumblr. It's hilarious, and gives you a great taste of the awful writing and the story.

This. I typically don't ready fantasy books, but the Song of Ice and Fire series is wonderful.

Storm Front by Jim Butcher is an amazing book. It is a fantasy book (which is my thing) but I think a lot of people would like it. It's the first in the Harry Dresdon series.
I just finished The Lost Saints of Tennessee, and loved it. It's Southern fiction, and it's pretty Southern, so that may not appeal to you. Think kind of similar to Bastard Out of Carolina, if you read that.
I got a little over half way through 50 Shades and just had to give up. It was that bad. The sex wasn't even that hot. Lots of orgasming, like, if you looked the the female protagonist sideways she would orgasm. Orgasms on boats, orgasms while tied up, ORGASMS ON PARADE! I'm only kidding about that last one, mostly. Weird.
I finally got around to reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I'm only about 70 pages in and I like the creepy feeling to it. It's different from what I usually read. I'm glad someone said the new Stephen King book isn't like his other ones, I'll add that to my list next.
I most recently read Bringing Up Bebe. I loved it, but I have a kid and im obsessed with her not becoming a holy terror, so take that suggestion for what it's worth.
I got this book for my sister for her birthday. She doesn't have any kids, she's just obsessed with all things French. And she is really into this book. LOL
Recent books that I've liked: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series Hunger Games series The Help The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Outliers
A book that I have been recommending to everyone is The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. It is one that everyone I know has liked. You can find it in the young adult literature section in Barnes and Noble.

I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain and couldn't put it down either! I really enjoyed it. Planning to read Insurgent next I think. Also second the Book Thief recommendation, that was a great book!
