We stopped for dim sum in Chinatown and were discussing walking over to the Capitol when Moe told me to stay safe. Plans changed. Heading the other direction for the evening.
stay safe! I'm not looking forward to the Metro ride home. Do you know how you are getting to the other direction?
You know what's funny? Ten minutes ago, that shooter was likely a law-abiding "responsible gun owner." And now, he's a CRAZY OUTLIER. Bitter lol.
I'm pretty sure handguns are illegal in DC already though.
ETA no sorry you can OWN a handgun but it looks like you have to keep it at home. Neither open nor concealed carry allowed if I'm reading the law correctly.

Crap, I know somebody who is in DC right now and checked in (via FB) at the Hart building a few hours ago. I hope she was long gone outta the area by now....
ETA: She is fine, she just updated her FB to let people know she had left not too long before the reports started coming in. Holy!
Is it bad the first thing that came to mind was I wonder if she lost it when she realized she couldn't get formula for her baby. Or pay her rent. Or she lost her job due to the shutdown.
But the government shut down is no big deal! Gas went down by 15 cents! Sunshine and shit rainbows! We're totally not a country in crisis right now!
I'd really like to know how one group of jerkwad motorcyclist doesn't allow you to assume all motorcyclists are jerkwads but one crappy person with a gun automatically means all people with guns are crappy.
I think the point is that no limitations are allowed on gun ownership because of the consequences for all you "responsible" gun owners. And then this shit happens. Over and over again. How the fuck are people supposed to tell who is a responsible owner and who is not, until it's too late and a police officer is running from a scene holding a child?
There are limitations in place already. There are limitations on motorcyclists. Following your logic, if the motorcycle gang had injured that child, then that would mean that we should not be able to get a motorcycle because you can't tell if they will be a responsible rider or not.
I think that the root of the issue is not with whether or not people can own guns. I truly and honestly believe that there is a much bigger problem in this country with getting people the mental health care that they so desperately need. It just doesn't make sense to take away people's rights because someone else can't play by the rules. There are so many things in this world that someone can use for evil and we can't ban them all.
And I'm getting really irritated by your continued use of "responsible". I am responsible with our firearms to a T and then some. But honestly, I don't think this conversation will really get anywhere because I'm not changing your mind and you are not changing mine.

Cars though!!! People with mental illness drive cars And motorcycles And have knives And can fun out how to make bombs And the list goes on
To put it on guns and not to put it on the complete shit mental health care in this country is, well, irresponsible too.
If a mentally ill person is going to commit a crime, they'll do it one way or another. Cars can run over, big heavy cars can do a lot of damage to a lot of people.
I don't disagree that guns "can" get into the wrong hands, there is no disputing that. However, the vast majority of the arguments for their being no guns around (no thank u btw), the same could be said for many other things that can be used as a dangerous weapon by a mentally ill person.

what exactly is your point though? The fact of the matter is *this* particular incident which people are dealing with, right this fucking second involves guns. The fact that it could be motorcycles, or knives, or bombs means nothing.
You know what? I'm bowing out of this because cinnamoncox is on "my side" and irritating me.
I really hope that the other side of this argument sees that I am truly trying to have a rational discussion about it like an adult and not make light of the current situation.
What I'm hearing is that the woman in the car tried to drive through the barricade at the White House. She was then chased to the Capitol Building where she tried to get through the barrier there. She started to back up and injured a cop. He told her to stop but she didn't so he opened fire and killed her. It doesn't sound like a shooter situation from what im hearing right now.

Yeah, because you can take out an entire classroom of kids in a matter of seconds with a knife.
I've never tried such a thing and don't even want to think about how long it would take but I imagine it doesn't take as long as one might think.
The point is, which u clearly know, you're just being an ass, is gun aren't the only way a "mentally ill" person can hurt someone if they want. You only chose the one example of knife and the one example of a case we doubt could be accomplished with a knife, and paired them up.
The SUV/motorcycle incident didn't involve guns and I'm pretty sure those motorcyclists were sick fucks, so terror and harm can be accomplished without a gun. And you all know it. I do understand it's easier to live in a world where it's so easy to just think that way, but sometimes reality is just that, reality

I do, honestly, and I'm not trying to be a dick. Guns scare the shit out of me, though, and I don't like them. Statistically speaking they make people less safe, and that concerns me. Mainly it's because I have a boy of an age where he's playing at friends' houses and they're all video-gamed out, and it worries me a lot.
I totally, 100% get that. I really do. And I completely appreciate your stance on it and in my heart, I really wish this wasn't even an issue but it is. (Yes, I know that is rainbows and unicorns stuff right there, but it's true.) It really sucks where the world is at right now and it makes me sad. I don't think you are being a jerk at all. I am truly trying to be rational and levelheaded here but it is very difficult to do when you involve certain topics and random, unthoughtful comments.

We are on the green line now heading North, so we didn't have to pass through any stops closer than the one we got on at (gallery place/Chinatown). I hope you get out easily tonight.
OMFG, I swear to god gun owners have some sort of bat signal in place that draws them to shooting related discussions so that they can crusade against the imaginary threat to their gun ownership.

But it was the way it happened in this case. And in too many other cases in the past year alone. You see that, right?

@lhc
I get that about the video games My DS is almost 15 and what some parents think is harmless because it's "only a video game" is horrifying. Just plain horrifying. I try very hard not to judge other parenting because it's not my place, but I've never been so shocked what parents will allow. It's super awkward to have to be always coming up with reasons why the kids have to come here so I can know what they are doing. In my mind it's not harmless and it desensitized the kids but many parents don't agree with me on that You gotta do what is best for yours It's tough, and each game seems to get worse

Great, I'm glad you got out now. Unfortunately my route this afternoon will be towards that direction but since the lockdown has been lifted I hope it won't be as bad. Things over here are pretty quiet. Let me know if you need anything by way of other hotel recs or anything
