Someone mentioned Komen. I hadn't thought to put that because it's not a place I shop, but I no longer support their races in any form. My grandmother died from breast cancer and she would be pissed if she knew i supported them!
As far as boy scouts, DH is an Eagle Scout. He is dismayed about the current state of scouts but they had such a positive influence in his life. He thinks, and I defer to him on this issue, that the experience depends a lot on the troop. Everything is very localized. We're still up in the air about what to do with our boys but the troop in our area has a great reputation.
I get this, but in the latest news story where the lesbian troop leader mom was booted, she said her local troop was fine with it, but once HQ got wind of it national policy trumped the local troop's wishes.
Staples, Isotoner, American Airlines... I'm sure there are others, but without being in a store looking at the aisles of products, I can't really think of any right now.
I wasn't aware of boycotts of any of these--what are the reasons?
The thing for me is, Dominos pizza is disgusting, I don't know where there is a Chic Filet or Walmart near me, I have no idea what Hobby Lobby even is. I'm too fat to fit in Abercrombie & Fitch clothes. So I don't think it's some big sacrifice that I don't go there. They could be covered in rainbow flags and I still wouldn't go.
I'm lazy. I'd like to boycott a lot of places, like Apple and Facebook for tracking so much data, Google for being an evil empire, AT&T for winning one of the worst Supreme Court decisions this century, every other cell and credit card company for having the same shit provisions in their contracts that AT&T ensured would be legally enforceable, and so forth.
But I like and need their products too much. It's easy to give up shit that is easily disposable or interchangeable with other products. I would have to move to a shack in the woods to boycott the companies that really make me angry.

DH thinks I'm insane for this one, but Valvoline. They had one of their employees standing outside in 100 degree heat wearing his all black uniform including pants with a "no waiting" sign.

That's not insane--it's humane. I will join you in your boycott of Valvoline! lol

Yeah, and we are watching them and waiting to see how it seems to be going before we make any decisions. I guess Scouts is not like a company where we are buying their product. As long as the individual troop is ok, it won't trickle down to the kids. Again, this is one where we have to weight out the pros and cons. My DH is about as far away from homophobic as a straight man can get so obviously they didn't indoctrinate hate for him. I think in the end, he may see all the positives as outweighing the negative.
The Salvation Army has really bad anti-LGBT policies. Generally will not allow gay or transgender people to stay in their shelters and when they do let them it comes with strings attached and lots of fire and brimstone "conversion" type preaching. If you look at their website you can see how they try to spin their position on this, but be warned that their stated policy that they help everyone, regardless, is bullshit. Locally, we've had really heinous issues with LGBT homeless people and the SA shelter. I would guess they also suck on other progressive issues but I don't know enough about those to elaborate.
In general, I don't support charities that force people to listen to religious stuff --preaching, required church-going, etc.-- in order to receive help.
...on top of this, even if they do serve LGBT families, they do not treat them as family units. "Single" people have to stay apart in their shelters, and married/coupled lesbians and gays are housed separately, in "single" dorms.

Ditto - as far as both go. My grandmother was very pro-choice/pro-woman and died of breast cancer, and I do not and will not support Komen.
My husband is also an Eagle Scout, as is my father. I guess we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. My husband is a bit dismayed about the anti-gay agenda, and is leaning towards a belief that participation in sports leagues and regular summer camp might be an acceptable alternative.
Thanks, llama! I was only aware of the issue that went down with Target several years ago, so I appreciate the insight.
I actually still shop at Target. I don't go out of my way to shop there or anything, but I feel they have pretty much redeemed themselves on the LGBT front from that high profile conservative/homophobic donation fiasco. They apologized, donated money to pro-LGBT groups, and don't seem to have a worse donation record as of right now that any other major corporation.
I think the pro-gay teeshirts they are selling this month for Pride Month are pretty weak --ugly AND only sold online AND only during June-- but it's a nice effort I guess. It shows that they at least know they need to seek redemption and are actively doing so. Repentance is nice.

What did Isotoner do? Their umbrellas are the best (brand name Totes)!
This Salvation Army drama is relevant to this. "miscommunication" my ass. I have never and will never put money in that annoying red pot around the winter holidays. They always ask and I always say "Sorry, I'm gay."
I shop just about anywhere unless they annoy the piss out of me. Fuck, even that isn't true given that walmart usually has less than half the lanes open necessary to get out of there in a reasonable amount of time and I still stop there pretty much every sunday after church.
I'm pretty sure Walmart on Sunday after church is the 3rd circle of hell. *shivers*

Hilltop. Don't go on Sunday.
I don't think there are chick fil a's anywhere on this coast. Before this board I'd never even heard of them.
Walmart. Easy enough since they are not in NYC. The only time I stepped foot into one is when H and I were in Arlington, TX staying at a hotel near Cowboys Stadium and he realized he forgot to bring socks with him (WTF?). Walmart was right across the street from the stadium and that's all there was.
There is no Chik-Fil-A around here for me to boycott.
I boycott all shitty pizza chain restaurants because anyone in NYC who eats pizza from Domino's, Papa John's, etc. should be shot when there are so many delicious mom-and-pop pizzerias on practically every corner of this city.

I don't want to make any assumptions here, so could you please explain this?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using ProBoards... So excuse any wonky autocorrect.
he said it was overt support of pro-gay agenda. I like froo-froo coffee too much to care. Really, companies have to do something I don't like closer to home for me to boycott.
GAP and all subsidiaries, Ann Taylor/Loft, F21, Walmart, Salvation Army, PetCo (unless I really have to), P&G, Chlorox, ummmm... I'm missing quite a few in there.
I do not currently boycott any stores because of political donations. I do boycott Monsanto, Komen, and a couple local gas stations that dont give you an option not to print the receipt. I have shopped at JCP more recently but I also love Chickfila and will continue to support the Salvation Army because I believe in what they do.
Most of mine have been mentioned (Walmart, Monsanto, Salvation Army, Komen, Boy Scouts) but I also refuse to donate to the March of Dimes. Their animal studies are awful.
