There are no stores that I boycott... Mostly b/c I don't feel it matters - look at all the people who boycott these stores on here... sure there are many more IRL... and most of these stores are doing just fine.
I do not donate to Komen anymore (I used to years ago)... my mom, aunt and grandmother are all survivors. Chances are that I will get breast cancer, too - but I do not agree with how they run their "charity" and won't give them my money.
I don't donate clothing to the Salvation Army (used to)... i donate to a local charity that helps families locally and directly (doesn't sell the clothing, etc)

I read an article about Chick Fil A stopping all donations. It was right after the last hoopla or maybe I'm remembering incorrectly. They definitely don't hide their christian roots, I mean, closed on Sunday and all.
ETA: I was boycotting Chick-fil-a but not really anymore although I'm avoiding fast food in general. Wall-Mart, any companies that test on animals, Komen - people at the office are talking about the Race for the Cure, which I did annually for several years but not this year and I've gotten some strange looks when I say no. Instead of starting an argument at work, I simply say I am focusing my charitable donations elsewhere. I'll have to look into some of the others mentioned here.
Thanks, llama! I was only aware of the issue that went down with Target several years ago, so I appreciate the insight.
I actually still shop at Target. I don't go out of my way to shop there or anything, but I feel they have pretty much redeemed themselves on the LGBT front from that high profile conservative/homophobic donation fiasco. They apologized, donated money to pro-LGBT groups, and don't seem to have a worse donation record as of right now that any other major corporation.
I think the pro-gay teeshirts they are selling this month for Pride Month are pretty weak --ugly AND only sold online AND only during June-- but it's a nice effort I guess. It shows that they at least know they need to seek redemption and are actively doing so. Repentance is nice.
Yeah but I get out of the fine print....they will only donate up to $120K. Their "right-wing" donation was $150K. If they want to be like "see, we love the gayz too" then at least pony up the additional $30K so that it someone like me won't be writing this statement on a website. lol!

You're remembering right. Just like Target took steps to right their wrong, Chick-fil-A has done the same, but people don't report on that side of the story.
If we are talking charities, I have one. I had a ton of baby gear and maternity clothes I wanted to donate and the only pregnancy type charity in my entire county is a religious based one and due to the religious/anti choice platform that their organization preaches, I refused to donate anything to them. I ended up having a yard sale and then donating the rest of my stuff to a local consignment store. It also made me think about how if I had time/money, I would love to open a non religiuos based pregnancy support center in my county.
I boycott all shitty pizza chain restaurants because anyone in NYC who eats pizza from Domino's, Papa John's, etc. should be shot when there are so many delicious mom-and-pop pizzerias on practically every corner of this city.
Truth.
amen. i ate papa john's one time in college. you couldn't pay me to eat that shit again.
Most of the ones I try to avoid have already been covered (Hobby Lobby, Wal-Mart, Nestle).
A couple I go out of my way to support are Home Depot and Raising Canes.
I struggle with Whole Foods because I need to shop there to get some gluten free stuff, but I could definitely spend less. The same with Domino's. I would love to support that they have launched a GF crust, but I don't want to order from there.
I think I'll stop at Starbucks this afternoon thanks to Pamela.
I shop just about anywhere unless they annoy the piss out of me. Fuck, even that isn't true given that walmart usually has less than half the lanes open necessary to get out of there in a reasonable amount of time and I still stop there pretty much every sunday after church.
I'm pretty sure Walmart on Sunday after church is the 3rd circle of hell. *shivers*
It is. But dammit if I don't forget something all the damned time and that's the closest, quickest way on my route.
But again, this is why I go to white people churches. We clear out around 11:45, allowing me to hit wallyworld ten minutes later. If I went to a black folks church, praise Jesus, you know I wouldn't get to the walmart parking lot until 1ish and heaven help me then.
Dude, I love some papa johns but I would never, ever eat it again if I live in the NY tri-state area. There is no excuse for chain pizza in NYC, Jersey, or Philly areas. None. I side eye anyone who keeps those turds in business there.
I also do not support any pet supply chains that buy from puppy mills or are even rumored to be connected to puppy mills.
x1000
I also will not support a local pet store that breeds and sells large birds.
I also won't support Make A Wish because they get puppies from Petland for wishes and refused to even consider going a different route (or how about NOT giving a terminally ill child a living animal?)
I don't boycott all that much. I'm lazy and there are very few options in my area. I live in podunk PA.
However... Komen is on my shit list and I'm done buying pink crap. I am now the proud owner of a KitchenAid mixer in boysenberry. It's not the shade of pink I originally wanted, but it didn't support Komen either.
We just got a Red Lobster in Baton Rouge. WHO EATS THERE?
tourists
We have them in Florida too - Florida! It's only the tourists that eat there and my sister who is unnaturally obsessed with those biscuits. However since she lives in Wisconsin, she is officially a tourist as well. A Floridian wouldn't be caught dead there.
I almost forgot Whole Foods. Their CEO's position on universal healthcare makes me gag.
I know! He is such a douche and everyone is snowballed by thinking that WF is so pro-all-good-stuff. However, I still shop there because it's the only place I can get nitrate free meats in a wide variety. They also stock a lot of veg from local farms; the local co-op is only open on Wednesdays and I can't always make it. I definitely don't get all the fruit/veg I need from my CSA.

There's a red lobster in waikiki. I gave directions to tourists, but I offered to give local suggestions. They told me they lived in alaska so they already got good fresh seafood. So? Is there a limit on how much fresh you eat so you have to compensate with frozen crap?
I'm a native floridian who has never stepped foot in a red lobster.

DH's reasoning for eating at chains while we are on vacation is that he knows what he will be getting there. he is scared shitless to waste money and food at a local place if he ends up getting something he doesn't like.
I hate being married to a picky eater
I hate this for you. Eating at local places while traveling is one of my favorite things about traveling.
I'd like to hear more about chick fil a backing off the donations to assholes. Once upon a time I was looking at their website and I think I remember seeing mentions of $$ going directly to shit like Focus on the Family. But I just looked again and I'm not seeing any of that.
Just their Winshape Foundation, which seems a little weird and does save-my-marriage camps, but I'm not seeing any overt support of campaigns against gay marriage or anti-choice stuff. I don't mind if places donate money for their pet causes with which I disagree as long as those pet causes aren't in direct opposition to the rights of my loved ones.
Also, Chick Fil a has the most cheerful fast food workforce EVER. Those people are amazing. They're smiling, alert, chipper and fast. They either pay, train and treat their employees well - or they drug them with something. Or they're all robots. So as long as they aren't directly opposing gay marriage I'm going to go back to enjoying my waffle fries because treating your low-skill workforce nicely is a pretty big plus in my book. Also according to their website they're working on rolling out recycling in all of their restaurants. Anybody want to enable my chicken love by telling me more?
This satisfies me. As long as no portion of the money I pay for my chicken sammich goes toward blocking gay marriage I am not offended by their jesus camps or glorification of hetero marriage. I'm open to being convinced otherwise (llama?) if I'm missing some wrinkle here though.
You and me both. You saw my pinterest whine last week? I just pinned a couple of more recipes that sound really good too.
I didn't realize WF is not good either. I don't really shop there much, it's just crazy when I go there. Plus, I can most of the same stuff at Super Target.
I guess that IS the appeal of chain restaurants. The devil you know, vs the devil you don't know. That's why they train their staff on consistency and stuff.
I'm adventurous, though. And I will most likely get a better meal at a local/mom and pop place. And if I don't, well, I tried. The only time I would pick a chain would be if I was in a very vegetarian-unfriendly area, or all the local places were meat-centric, like BBQ joints. But a ton of chains are also veggie-unfriendly, like Applebees and TGI Fridays.
I also will not support a local pet store that breeds and sells large birds.

You would rather a little kid die not ever knowing the joy of having a pet? I love animals too and yes they should rescue instead of getting them from Petland, but not granting their wish at all? Am I missing something here?

I would not make it past a first date with a picky eater. Also, I've never found chain restaurants to be good, so a local place seems like it would give me better odds.
I confess that I ate a McDonald's when I studied abroad in Prague but 1) I was there for a full summer so I ate plenty of local fare, and 2) I wanted the experience of being able to order a beer with my Big Mac.

How many of those dogs are kept vs. how many of those dogs are returned? Petland is making a "charitable donation" and being able to write it off as a tax deduction. They're also getting good PR credit for participating. Also, from my understanding, the kids have a list of wishes, and it's up to Make A Wish to choose which one to fulfill.
So, in this instance, it's not "zomg dying kid will denied a puppy!" It's "big evil puppymill machine is getting a coat of sparkly varnish slapped on them to make them look good." Trust me, the kid not getting a puppy isn't going to hurt them.
