The thing for me is, Dominos pizza is disgusting, I don't know where there is a Chic Filet or Walmart near me, I have no idea what Hobby Lobby even is. I'm too fat to fit in Abercrombie & Fitch clothes. So I don't think it's some big sacrifice that I don't go there. They could be covered in rainbow flags and I still wouldn't go.
Hilltop. Don't go on Sunday.
I don't think there are chick fil a's anywhere on this coast. Before this board I'd never even heard of them.
There is one by my work and one abuot 5 miles from my house - both put in within the last 4ish years. But I am in the conservative bubble of OC.
I read an article about Chick Fil A stopping all donations. It was right after the last hoopla or maybe I'm remembering incorrectly. They definitely don't hide their christian roots, I mean, closed on Sunday and all.
You're remembering right. Just like Target took steps to right their wrong, Chick-fil-A has done the same, but people don't report on that side of the story.
As long as their owners continue to make nasty, bigoted public statements about gay people (and they do) I will continue to recognize my right as a gay person to be pissed about that and not give them my gay money.
There's a red lobster in waikiki. I gave directions to tourists, but I offered to give local suggestions. They told me they lived in alaska so they already got good fresh seafood. So? Is there a limit on how much fresh you eat so you have to compensate with frozen crap?
I'm a native floridian who has never stepped foot in a red lobster.
DH's reasoning for eating at chains while we are on vacation is that he knows what he will be getting there. he is scared shitless to waste money and food at a local place if he ends up getting something he doesn't like.
I hate being married to a picky eater
Hey, better than being married to a hateful bigot! Amirite, Pamela?

:Y:
Signed,
Gay spouse to a picky eater who is decisively not a hateful bigot.

Have they stopped donating money to FOTF? Have they stopped making horrible comments about gay people? Cause I sure have not heard about them stopping any of these things. Do you have a source, Max88?

The last nasty public statement was like, a couple of months ago at the MOST, so I'm also gonna be waiting on that source...

So, Whole Foods. Do they make anti-healthcare reform contributions, or is that the CEO's personal belief? Does the company itself actually make any political contributions?
ETA: I'm trying to read up on this. John Mackey isn't even the WF CEO anymore...

It's the CEO's personal belief. He wrote an op-ed a while back that was very bootstraps-oriented:

I knew it was the one guy's personal belief and not necessarily anti-healthcare donations, but I'm curious about whether someone has more info about whether John Mackey is still the CEO? I googled quickly and only saw him mentioned, but I admit I didn't look very hard.
I would be willing to shop there if they had a change in CEO. Not that I can really afford to shop there, but there is one kind of close to our new apartment, so I assume this info would be helpful at some point.

His Wiki page lists him as the "former CEO"; however, wholefoodsmarket.com still lists him as a co-CEO. I do have to say, he may have an idiotic opinion on healthcare reform, but if his Wiki page is correct, his personal charitable donations are impressive.

They have stopped donating to FOTF and other anti-gay companies. It was stated in a press release, I'm sure you can goggle it. You and another posters mentioned them making horrible, bigoted comments. Can someone please point me to them? I'm seriously asking because I've never come across any article stating so.
And I don't think it matters to most people, because in the end money is going to CFA corporate, but each restaurant is franchised by an individual with their own views and opinions. Individuals who support gay rights and ::gasp:: individuals who are gay themselves.
Ah, the always lovely "Find your own source for my statement"
FYI, the Google turns up nothing about them stopping their support of FOTF. It only turns up articles talking about all the anti-gay organizations they have donated too.
"As a result, we will not champion any political agendas on marriage and family. This decision has been made, and we understand the importance of it."
Its in that same press release. And no, I asked to find where they have stated the nasty bigoted comments. They are continuing to offer marriage resources through their foundation, workshops, and seminars. That's what they are referring.

Can you please post the link to where you found that statement? I need the context.
So they say they won't "support any political agendas on marriage and family," yet donate to organizations like Exodus International?
Yeah, companies can SAY whatever they want to say about whether they are anti-gay. My job is not to just believe whatever comes out of the mouth of the CEO, but rather to check the political donations of the company. As of the most recent data that appears to be available, Chick-Fil-A has supported a huge number of anti-gay organizations. Some of these, like Exodus International, are so heinous in their human rights abuses and vitriol toward the LGBT community that even if they never ever donated again (doubtful) I would never spend a dime at their restaurants.
This link has a very thorough rundown of the donations and of other policies that appear to contradict the "we're not anti-gay" line the CEO uses: equalitymatters.org/blog/201103220005
"We also believe in the need for civility in dialogue with others who may have different beliefs. While my family and I believe in the Biblical definition of marriage, we love and respect anyone who disagrees."
This is so bigoted and condescending. It's not about civility in dialogue, but about their desire to deprive me of my civil rights. I'm sooooooo happy they love and respect me while trying to deny those rights.
EVEN if they never gave another dime to anti-gay political groups or organizations, it still would not be enough because aside from never being able to recover from doing something that awful, there's still this (again from the linked press release): This decision has been made, and we understand the importance of it. At the same time, we will continue to offer resources to strengthen marriages and families. To do anything different would be inconsistent with our purpose and belief in Biblical principles."
Same-sex couples and same-sex headed families are not included in their definition of "marriage and family" and same-sex couples are excluded from these programs that they run/donate to (it seems like a combination of both.) Basically they are continuing to donate to anti-gay groups that hide their anti-gayness under the religious family values umbrella. I am just as not-ok with this as I would be any political donation.
Chic fil a could offer complimentary massages, babysitting and housecleaning services with their chicken nuggets, and I would still never darken their doorstep. I have too much love for my LGBT friends and family to give money to bigoted assholes. Same goes for Hobby Lobby.
I also have no love for tha Salvation Army, Curves or Komen, and no son of mine will ever be a Boy Scout. The BSA are not only anti-gay, they're anti-atheist.
I go out of my way to support places with pro-gay "agendas", because I believe in civil rights, and dammit, I want to see my friends have the same rights as my H and I have.
I also choose Wendy's for their donation to adoption causes.

Sure. I'm not a fan of Horizon organics, and I've got a good handle now on products that are cruelty free.
I actually like Petsmart (Petsmart Charities donated a bunch of money to help build an adoption center in one of their stores in Westminister--it provides additional shelter space for something like 100 animals for Boulder Humane Society. Our local PS provides space weekly for 6 local rescues to do adoption events--I can physically see the good work they do for our community)
Oh..our family really tries to avoid products that contain palm oil.
We don't watch anything that has to do with horse racing. At all. I don't think we so much "boycott" or "avoid" places, but we do give our business to places we agree with, and I suppose educate on topics or issues we feel passionately about (like horse racing-who cares if we just don't watch it on tv haha and we were probably never going to buy a ticket to the Derby--but if asked I'll tell you about how corrupt and drug ridden that business is)

I like PetSmart's pro-adoption message (I lead an off-site adoption event there for my local shelter once a month), but they still sell small animals (those come from mills, too); and I don't like their anti-pit-bull policies in their pet hotels.

Haven't they had issues with their grooming and vet centers, too?
