The decision appears to finally put some limits on what you can justify by using the commerce clause.
Okay. What things have been justified by using the commerce clause before? (I'm just not well versed enough in this stuff. I am happy to have people who are!)
Everything!
Congress's other enumerated powers suck. Coin money? Call forth militias? Rule over DC?
They literally use commerce for everything. A tiny reigning in is a huge deal, and has been needed for a very long time.
You are a miracle worker, my friend. Now all you have to do is kill off the olds, legalize gay marriage at the federal level, and put the producers of Two and A Half Men in jail for crimes against humanity and the world will be set to rights.

Wow - no wonder you're happy about some limitation on the commerce clause - I had no idea about this stuff. I stand by my original idea of flooding Washington and starting over.
I know it's naive, but I always see the Justices as legal scholars and not partisan people.
I like that Roberts swung left - it shows me that he cares about the constitution and the law, not so much politics. I LOVE when that happens. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy even if I disagree or something, lol.
Ditto.
And I'm PISSED with CNN for reporting it wrong. I heard it in the car, jumped out in the office and said the wrong shit only to have it later corrected.
Oh yes, we're definately cranky that people will all have health insurance because that totally guarantees that healthcare will be affordable for all.
Yeahno but continue to believe conservatives just hate the poor. It's more fun that way. It's decidedly more fun than accepting that medical care will continue to be ridiculously expensive for many people.

I agree with LM. The ACA is by no means a perfect solution. The cost of healthcare is completely out of control but at least it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully, we'll be able to build upon it soon.
The fact that so many people (here and elsewhere) thought you could justify forcing people to buy something under the Commerce clause suggests that it had not been reigned in nearly enough as of late.
I couldn't peek at my phone during that stupid meeting!!!
I am happy about this. May I also brag that not only did I state for the record ON THIS BOARD that everything would be upheld, but I thought Roberts would be the one to shift left. Though I didn't say that part out loud but I so wish that I did because I'm sure none of you believe me.
I am very interested to see reactions from the swing states.
GBCN is like an elephant, y'all. It does not forget.
And also, everyone is fat and wrinkly.
I think I love you.
Also, am I the only one who can't wait to watch Stephen Colbert's head explode tonight? Or the Daily Show mocking the initial incorrect reporting? My god, today's gonna be a good day for politically themed comedy!
FTR, I think the ACA sucks (affordable, LOL!!!), but I enjoy political theater and I enjoy it even more when it involves SCOTUS. I also think the tax reasoning makes sense, and am glad that it was not upheld under the commerce clause.
I'm also going to enjoy the ads about it being a tax. I feel like the fun of election season is finally here. Let the games begin!
I'm looking forward to TAX being the dirty word of this election instead of VAGINA or GAY. Taxes are something I understand people actually caring about.

It's not like all the people against this all of the sudden are cool with it and agree its constitutional just because SCOTUS said so.
I agree it's constitutional as SCOTUS interpreted it. It was absolutely not constitutional under the commerce clause, and I think it's great to see that affirmed.
None of this means I think it's good policy.
None of this means I'm not excited to kill Obama with the dual message that his bill raised your taxes and took away your doctor this fall.

Seriously. We're on vacation in Cape Cod this week and next. I realize this is one of Romney's "home states" but it's a very blue state and I'm quite surprised by the number of Obama adds I've seen. I don't think I saw a single one back in MD.
