I loathe the loaded stigma bullshit against men and their height.
Afreakingmen.
Yeah. It sucks.
I have zero concern over dd's height, tall or short, but being short is hard for boys. I just want him to be a typical range height.
I've been friends with some very short men and it's super hard for them. And I wouldn't date short men when I was single because I wanted a chance at normalcy for my kids. It's definitely unfair.
I think height perception has a lot to do with where you are living and the ethnic representation of the area.
I am in retail buying, and we use software to help figure out size curves by region. There are areas of the US where a men's Small, or sizes 7-8 in men's Footwear, are much more important vs other areas.
Innnnnteresting. I am 5'9 and DH is 6'4. Our families are both Dutch, which is probably why I think 6'2 or 6'3 is an "average" man and you're not "tall" until 6'5 or 6'6, but when I actually look around in public, a lot of men are pretty close to my height.
And that probably explains why you can always find long length pants in store in West Michigan. Mystery solved!
I think people are misunderstanding percentiles vs. predicted height. Percentile is where LO is in comparison to other kids at this age, that doesn't mean they will stay in that percentile. A height projection is based on math formula that uses parental height. So a kid who is 40%ile at age 3 could well have a growth spurt the next month and go up to 50%ile fitting with their prediction of an avg height whatever that is. or they could have just grown and be at avg when. they are actually lower end of avg but happen to have just caught up. Plus growth chnages over time so an avg kid may slow down as a pre-teen and not grow as much slowly dropping back or have a huge growth spurt and jump ahead of the growth curve.

I've heard for years that 5'9 was average for men--so 5'8 seems right in there. I just looked up the men's Olympic gymnastics team heights...the tallest was 5'7..
But..who cares how tall they are (Stigma bullshit)--
I am 5'10" and do not think that 5'8" is short for a guy. I think that is about average. That said, the ped predicted DS would be 6'1". My H is 5'11", but we have a lot of height in our family.

You are definitely in Men's XXL territory! Inseams must be the absolute worst. When I had apparel, we were just doing Men's SM-XXL, and that is hard enough. Small has overlap into Boys' as well, so it gets confusing as to who is buying what and why.
I am now in Footwear, which is a huge pain with sizing, since we need to offer sizes 7-16 in Men's, with a bunch of half sizes too. The size 16 shoe stretches from my fingertips to my elbow, but there is a market for them.
The internet and stores shipping to other stores have been key for us, because we can buy more limited units and maximize them to the fullest.

So true. I'm tall in NYC or latin america but average out here in CA.
I think California is the most challenging market. The differences in sizing, climate, income and lifestyle are just so vast. It's really hard to get a handle on all of that, and that even doesn't take into account if people actually like what you are selling.
thebreakfastclub, I no longer live in west MI. I am thankful for Internet shopping! (And DH wears "only" a size 14 shoe. We have a 6'7" friend who wears a 16.)
I am the shorty in my family...I'm afraid DD is going to close in on 6' like all of my aunts and cousins, haha. Maybe at that point drones will easily be delivering extra long clothes.

i'm hugging my computer screen
Ok. Now I feel like I'm coming off as a shortie hater. Lol.
I am so not, obviously, since I'm super short. I think short people are just as good as anyone else. All of my anti short genetic discrimination is related to how hard it is for the short man. It's nothing insurmountable, it's just a frustration in life I hope ds avoids. Obviously it's totally out of my control.
And the stigma is dumb and totally a societal issue, but it's the world we live in. It's one of those "I would love to change the world, but not with MY kid" things.

So true. I noticed it when I was getting casual clothes during law school. The difference in the sizes that the Emeryville Old Navy carries versus the one in Novato is astonishing. They are only 30 minutes apart.
FWIW, I'm 5'7", H is 5'11", and it's predicting my 3 yo son will be 6'.
I put in 5'7" and 5'8" (rounded up for myself), and it's telling me 5'5". Bogus.
Definitely bogus. I don't even have a kid, but I put in my height (almost 5'4", so I rounded to it) and DH (5'10"). For a boy it said it would be 5'10" and for a girl it said 5'4". I just copied our heights, lame.
I agree, 5'8" seems on the short side for a man. Isn't there some formula, like twice the height at some age is projected adult height? Only, I thought it was younger than 5. Off to google.
Doubling the height of a two year old is supposed to give a reasonable estimate if their adult height.
5'8" seems like the short side of average to me.
My kid isnt 2 yet and he's already over 3 feet tall. Holy crap.

I had heard for girls you doubled the height before 2. Maybe 18 months?
FI is 5'7"/5'7.5" and was so tiny as a kid they were worried he might not hit 5 feet. The doctors actually tested his hands and feet to do some test because they were concerned he had some disorder. He was the same height as his sister who is 3 years younger and now 5'2" for a while. He is a smidge on the short side now, but not by much.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. Genes are weird. My Mom is 5'8" and the shortest person in her family. My Dad is 5'10" and one of tallest people in his family. So you would think the boys would be around Dad's height. They all tower over him. My five brothers are all over 6' tall. My baby brother just turn 14 and is 6' 3" and the doctor said he is no where near done growing. So you never really know what will happen.
I think 5'8 is average, I am 5'8 and most guys seem to be about my height. My dh is 5'11, but my family everyone but my grandmother, is above average, my uncle is 6'7, my dad was 6'5 my brother is 6'3, on my dh side, everyone seems so short. His sister is 5', his mom is 5'1 and his dad is 5'8, his brother is 5'6. I feel bad for my dd if the double at 2 is her height, she isn't even going to break 5' then. She seems to be taking after my dh side, she just hit the chart at 1% for height. My ds on the other hand no one has any idea, but he would be 6' plus based on the double 2 years. He runs small since he was a preemie, and they don't think he will really show till he starts hitting puberty to catch up.
I wouldn't describe a 5'8 guy as "short," if he is truly 5'8, and not actually 5'6 but saying he is 5'8.
lol my dad is "5'6" - funny how he is actually only a hair taller than me and I am 5'3
my mom is only 5'1, and my husband is 6'1 so our kids could be all over the place. my pedi won't give me a projection at all, but my son, also 5 is also in 50th%
