Maybe next season doctors should follow the at-home contestants as well?
To be fair to her and other BL contestants, it's probably really hard to eventually stop losing weight and switch to maintaining. It makes you feel excited (or at least it does for me) to see the scale go down, and sometimes I think too much focus is put on getting that feeling and not on the realities of the world post-show. I bet she was so caught up in trying to lose weight to win that she disregarded everything else.
It makes me so sad for her to read comments elsewhere about how she looks "disgusting" or "like Skeletor". Does she look too thin? Yes. Do I think she should maybe get some help to get to a healthier weight and work on setting goals unrelated to weight? Yes. But I hate to see people bullying her for it.
Rachel was not an at-home contestant; they usually end up looking fantastically healthy (Tumi, Marie, etc.).
I think the show claims that the doctors have contact with the contestants until the finale, which, if true, makes Rachel's weight loss even more disturbing.
She wasn't an "at-home" contestant, but she did have several weeks off the ranch training on her own where she wasn't being seen by the trainers and the doctors daily. That gives her the freedom to tell the doctors that she is doing fine, and then do whatever she wants.
We're shocked that someone will go to extreme, even unhealthy, lengths to lose weight in a competition? I do think she could use a few more pounds on her, but if she's short, then that may not even be that many additional pounds. I feel bad for her that her weight (and personality) is being talked about so negatively, but I guess that's also part of the competition.
I wanted to start this thread last night but I was afraid of being flamed for body snarking.
She looks like Karen Carpenter. It's not just the gaunt frame, but her skin is waxy and dull, her hair lost its shine, etc. Lots of red flags. I hope she doesn't have any lasting complications. NBC is going to have some damage control to do.
Come on. Her old growth cannot be affected by her current diet. You're being ridiculous.
Rachel was shocking. I couldn't even enjoy the rest of the show. If she truly is 5'4" (I suspect she may be taller), her bmi is 18, which is half a point below the normal range.
Bob and Jillian's expressions made me sad and I really hope they'll address it.
I think the show need to change to a targeted goal weight. Some contestants need to lose 55%+ body weight, but a lot of them would be ideal at 45% or a similar number. This one size fits all approach is not healthy, as evidenced by Rachel's appearance at the finale.
I just watched the live reveal and wow- the trainers really didn't hide their reactions at all! I thought maybe that picture was just an unfortunate freeze frame, but their faves were "wtf" the whole time the camera was on them.

The fact that the Biggest Losers website and FB don't have anything about Rachel winning is pretty telling. I have been watching the show for years, and there is ALWAYS a picture of the winner flexing their muscles, showing how fit they are. I have yet to see a pic of Rachel flexing, because she has no muscle tone.

Uh, hair shine (and fullness) is affected by nutrition.

A to get her BMI to 18.5 would be like 5 pounds. 5 pounds is not a life or death situation. I think people just see her "before" pic and then see her now and see the drastic difference. It doesn't mean she's unhealthy.
Gaining 5 lbs is not difficult. But do you realize what she must have done to lose 5 lbs off of 110? And in such a short period of time? There is nothing healthy about the lengths she must have gone through to lose an additional 45 lbs in a month or two, tops.

18.5 is still borderline, that doesn't make it healthy. And that is assuming that she is only 5'4", Jillian is 5'3" and Rachel is taller than Jillian. I would wager a bet that Rachel is more like 5'7", which if that is the case at her current weight her BMI is 16.4. She would need to gain 15 pounds to be borderline healthy.
she was supposed to be on Kelly & Michael this morning (whoever the winner was was slated to be there) and conveniently couldn't be there b/c of weather (which absolutely could be the case, but I also think NBC might have pulled her from it anyways as the reaction has been BAD)

That confused me, because wasn't she on the Today show? They're both in NY.

Biggest Loser also hasn't posted anything to Facebook and conveniently stopped tweeting after Bobby weighed in.

I didn't see the Today show, so if she was on it that is super weird
This show is so fucked up, it's one of the reasons I don't watch it anymore. Someone posted that she lost 110 lbs in 14 weeks on the ranch. How is that even remotely healthy? She lost nearly 8 lbs PER WEEK! And now the trainers are acting all horrified at her final appearance? Like they're not part of the problem.

I'd wager to guess that Rachel would have disregarded a physicians recommendation to change what she was doing with prize money on the line. I think she's smart and knew exactly what she was doing, unhealthy as it may (probably) have been. At the end of the day, this show is about playing the game.

That would be 7.8 lbs per week if she lost in a consistent manner. There were big numbers put in by everyone the first few weeks. They were all eating poorly and not exercising. This isn't necessarily unhealthy.
I know almost nothing about this show, so this may be a stupid question.
Do they somehow monitor them when they go home to make sure they do not take diet pills? It pretty easy to get your hands on some phentermine. I'm sure for $250,000 a lot of people would take diet pills to assist them.
I think one of the biggest issues with these damn shows is they don't treat the eating disorders. Most of the contestants probably deal with compulsive overeating. It's not treated, it's not even mentioned. Then they lose, lose, lose unhealthy amounts of weight each week. All focus is on food and working out. I would not be surprised if more contestants didn't end up with bulimia or anorexia because of it.
An eating disorder is an eating disorder. It needs to be dealt with.
I'm going to go ahead and sit down over here.
Her weight/appearance at the reveal looks like she is suffering from an ED, IMO, and took the weight loss to extremes. I am saddened that she won, because it sends the impression that this is "healthy", and it is not. At all. Her face is gaunt, her arms are much too bony and not toned, and her legs are very disturbing to me.
