I currently have a drawer full of crap. I am ready to buy some nicer stuff. I want to go to Sephora this weekend and need help trying to decide what to buy.
Green eyes, brown hair, pale skin with pinkish/blue undertones. Normal-ish skin - occasional spells of dryness or oilness, depending on weather, stress, period, etc but nothing crazy. I wear glasses.
So I'm thinking I'll get a Naked Palette and maybe some other product?
At first I was leaning towards 2, but upon further reflection, I am now wondering if 3 would be better. Suggestions? Tutorials?
Also, if I wanted to spend $100ish at Sephora, and spent half that on the Naked Palette, what other things should I buy to start off with?

me me me! I love talking about makeup!
You need one of the Nakeds, 1000%. I have them all because I am a fiendish makeup hor, lol. 2 is very cool colors. 1 is nice and warm browns. 3 is very nice and rosy warm, rose golds. I firmly believe that all the colors are great on anyone, but you have to be comfortable with the colors. If you balk at really rosy colors, then you won't like 3. Same with the violets/grays of 2. But I swear that they will all look good on you. I am very blond and gray-eyed, and every color looks prettier than the last.
Naked 1 should come with an Urban Decay primer, so you'll be ok there. What else, what else... How are your brushes? Do you have different ones for different things on your eyes? Do you use foundation? Have you considered a Beauty Blender to apply it?
Makeup by Tiffany D has youtube videos about makeup. I like her looks.
Get yourself a Nyx Milk jumbo eye pencil from Target for 4 bucks, too. You can use it for a million things. Great little investment.
If your willing to spend at least $50, you can do s custom makeover at sephora. I had one 2 weeks ago. They color matched me, taught me application techniques etc. It was 45 minutes and I made an appt ahead of time on their website.

What kind of stuff? Eye makeup? Foundation? Lip stuff? All of it?
Good question. I guess I don't know.
If you were building a collection, and were going to rely on some drug store stuff and some Sephora stuff, and gradually upgrade, where would you start upgrading? Is there something similar to Naked Palette that is maybe an assortment of trial size lip colors or eye liners or something? Or if you could only buy one thing at Sephora for the rest of your life, what would it be?

with eyeshadows. because eyeshadows multitask-- you can use them as eyeliners as well as eyeshadows.
If I had your eyes/skin/hair tones I'd pick between the 1 and 3 naked palettes. They seem like they suit fairer people better than 2. I ditto getting a lesson for other products.
GET THE SHIMMER! GET IT! (you can cut it with the mattes if you want.)
I'm open to shimmer.
I have been randomly browsing make up tips, and I'm learning that shimmers can be better with glasses, since glasses cast shadows, and the shimmers help reflect light better. I had no idea make up was so technical, but once I read that and thought about my own make up collection and habits, I realized that it's true, at least for me (my glasses are a medium thick dark blue plastic frame).

I have similar coloring to you, I just bought the 3 and haven't tried it all, but it works well on me. I wasn't excited about the black/blue in the other two naked palettes, since I don't see myself lining my eyes.
I also have a Basics, I bought that first - but I wasn't happy with all mattes, I used mostly the first color that has shimmer.
I started my upgrade with foundation and concealer last summer.
I'd probably upgrade eyeshadows first. One, they're versatile, and two, I think eyeshadows are an area where drugstore/cheaper versions just don't compare. The colors, the payoff, etc. is all worth the cost of the more expensive stuff.
I think mascara and lip stuff are easier to find at drugstore prices. There are also decent, cheap blush options too. If you have an ulta nearby, it's worth looking at for some cheap stuff because they carry Nyx products which are inexpensive, but IMO, better than the typical drugstore options (usually cheaper too).
I would probably pick an easy foundation routine along with e/s. By easy, I mean a cc cream or a bb cream or something you can do that is one step that gives you an even skin tone. I love makeup but foundation and all that annoys me, esp because my skin relatively good. So I like a cc cream or Origins Vitazing with some concealer and loose powder.
The other thing I would do is figure out what works best for you as far as brows. I like Laura Mercier's brow gel with an angled brush but there are great drugstore products too. Groomed brows that are filled in can make a huge difference.

Side note: am I the only one who doesn't view shimmer as professional? For those of you who use shimmer do you wear it to work? Am I being crazy? I am totally open to finding out I am nuts.

do you have Ulta near you?
they carry both prestige and drugstore brands, so they always seem like an interesting destination for a buy like this

Ooooh, I am very intrigued by this. Â
I told her to treat me like a 12 year old who knew nothing about makeup. She was great. I ended up buying everything.

I think it depends on the shimmer. I have not ever noticed anyone in unprofessional eyeshadow in a professional situation, so admittedly I've never really thought about it, but yes, I'll definitely be proceeding with caution before I go to court.

So much what she said. cheap eyeshadows don't spread, they don't blend, they're grainy and gritty.
Also, it was very recent that I learned about eyebrows, and I am a believer now. I have a variety of eyebrow products I am trying-- Sigma pencil, Elf powder/cream kit, and a Lancome pencil-- and I like them all equally.

I highly recommend doing this - I prefer makeup counters with makeup artists over sephora because sephora can be hit or miss as far as having artists. But I've had good experiences at various sephoras; it's just not as consistent. I like MAC and Chanel. Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier are good, too. Nordstrom is usually a good place to go for counters.

yes, but I am soft with it and blend it with matte shades.

I admit that I've never once given a second's thought to my brows, other than some basic plucking for shape, until I started looking at make up blogs. I am amazed at what a difference a good brow makes. This is an entirely new world for me so I haven't a clue where to start.

have you seen how teachers' dress?
in a world where 'ugly holiday sweater' is just a sweater, shimmer is the least concern.
I also think in matters how much shadow is on you face. A little shimmer eye shadow can be the same as a little shiny lip gloss, unless you are in a very conservative field.

Yes. I have no clue what happened, but my eyebrows suddenly thinned out and faded. What's left of the outer edges suddenly went white-blonde. I literally looked in the mirror a couple months ago and wondered where the fuck my eyebrows were. It was so odd.
Anyway, using an eyebrow pencil really makes a difference, although it's easy to overdo it and look like a clown, so a soft touch is necessary.
I really need to get something to help calm some of my brow hairs. I don't dare pluck any because so few of them have pigment left, but I have a few that want to stand at attention and simply using a pencil to fill them in and then a brush to blend the color doesn't tame them.
irish, I'm with you on shimmer. I suspect the people who can pull off the shimmer in a professional setting are the ones who are more artful with the application. Personally, I don't have the skill to do it.
