I need to find videos to watch to decide what I realistically can do.
So here are a few more questions --
for eyes, what is the difference between primer and base, and do I need them?
what is the difference between bronzer and blush?
Liquid eyeliner - yay or nay? If yay, is there a drugstore brand you recommend for me to decide if I can apply it?
Brushes. Years ago, someone got me some pack of Sephora brushes. There's 5 or 6 of them. I forgot I had them until recently, so I haven't ever used them. Do you clean your brushes after every use so the colors don't get all mixed up? How do you clean them?
Primer and base are pretty interchangeable. You could use both in theory, but I tend to go for one product that does both - a primer/base that has a neutral color I can wear under my regular shadows. I like MAC paint pots, but I know some people aren't into them. My favorite is bare study and it's sort of champagne/nude color and I wear it on it's own a lot.
Bronzer is used more for contouring and blush is usually more of a color for the apples of your cheeks. There are some that seem like they could be either product (more tan blushes). If you are fair, I would stay away from bronzer as you are learning and look more at highlighters.
I do not like liquid eyeliner but I think it is personal preference. I prefer using a makeup brush (flat eyeliner) with Laura Mercier tightline cake liner or a makeup brush with eyeshadow or a pencil (you can drag a brush over the pencil point to get the color on the brush). Bobbi Brown gel liner would be my preference for a cat eye or something like that over liquid. Liquid is hard for me to work with.
I clean my brushes fully, weekly. Otherwise I brush them off on a washcloth or will spray a bit of brush cleaner on them (I mix water and baby wash in a spray bottle) and brush them off.

bronzer is for contouring (making the lower part of your cheek look inward / making the cheekbones seem prominent) and also for making you look a bit tan.
blush is for giving you a flush/color.
Loreal liquid eyeliners are totally fine.
I clean my brushes once a week. Judge away, folks.
I use my kids' baby shampoo/wash. Honest and YestoCarrots and SheaBaby.
This is why you are an honorary black person. In fact, I'll go ahead and say you're black-ish/blahhhh. Cause black folks lean on The Color Purple for everything!

eta: I am putting together a bunch of literary criticism for my final lesson on Their Eyes Were Watching God, so when you posted this, I was immersed in "The Signifying Monkey." lol.
OK thanks, this is amazing, I am learning so much.
Who would like to educate me on foundation.
The word foundation - does it always mean liquid foundation, or can it mean powder (or some other form?) as well? Or is powder a different thing?
Also concealer and under eye concealer - I'm assuming these are two different products?
Foundation really encompasses all of those, IMO... it can be one of them or a combination of them. Because I am fair, and my skin is relatively good, I prefer a really light, easy liquid/moisturizer type foundation to even out my skin tone with loose powder on top. I like the bb creams and cc creams, but I also use Origins Vitazing a lot (it's weirdly grayish coming out of the tube but it evens out my skin tone). So I do origins vitazing, then concealer, then my powder. Concealer kind of depends on your skin tone. For some people, they do need two different colors for under eye and blemishes/spots, or you can use a corrector to neutralize the under eye area and use the same concealer. It just depends on your skin tone and needs, IMO. I use the same concealer shade but use a corrector from bobbi brown before I put concealer under my eye. I like Chanel's loose powder. I swear it's magical.
I've gotten really lazy over the years - liquid foundation (not the creams or tinted moisturizers) can be kind of a PITA to make sure it's blended well. Brushes help but I like the ease of the moisturizer type products and not having to worry about a perfect match since most of the cc creams/bb creams blend into your skin really well.

For foundation I use either Stila's BB cream or Aveda Tinted Moisturizer.
Eyeliners- UD 24/7 liners. Great staying power and they go on smooth. UD will usually have a nice set of mini sized ones in the fall...they do go on sale right around the holidays so it pays to stalk them online.
Benefit has a decent priced neutral eye kit (3 different options) that comes with 4 shadows and 2 cream shadows that can double as primer.
If you aren't a Sephora Beauty Insider be sure to sign up. They offer all sorts of promos and discounts throughout the year.
Mascara- I love Blinc mascara. Its a 'tube' mascara and it doesnt run even in the rain or when you cry.
MAC is my go to for eyeshadow and lip colors. My makeup collection looks like a MAC counter.
Clarins makes a good primer but its a bit $$$.
For $100 you should be able to get a good eye palette, mascara and a new lip color. You can use the darker eyeshadows to double as liner if you dont want to spring for a new eyeliner.

Foundation can come liquid, powder, and cream form. If you have really dry skin, I'd recommend liquid. I use liquid and I have combo skin. Some people love Bare Essentials/Bare Minerals foundation, which is powder form. So if liquid isn't for you, I'd recommend that.
You want the color to match your skin, skin on your neck, near your ears, etc. You should be able to blend it and not have a harsh line of where your color is.
Under eye concealer generally is a shade lighter than your foundation. It can match, but a brighter shade normally brightens up your face. You can use the same product for both, if the color matches your foundation. Otherwise I'd recommend using two different products. I use Prolong Wear concealer from MAC and it is a lighter shade than my foundation. For concealer, for blemishes, I have a color closer to my foundation.
I think powder might be what I want.
Typically, I wash my face, and put on oil of olay lotion. Then I dab on some maybelline concealer where I need it, and hit off the whole face with some cover girl powder. My face is starting to be blotchier than it used to be, and the difference in color under the eyes more noticeable, so this is partly why I feel like I need an upgrade.
I'm thinking I don't want to fuck with my Oil of Olay because it seems to work really well on my skin. I used to have a seriously oily t-zone, and I'm so happy to be over that phase and have a lotion that works. I also attribute Bay area weather to my normalizing my skin.
I think powder is probably the way to go, I just need a better one. But it sounds like I might also want a little something extra for under the eyes.
I am going to have a hard time sticking to $100 at Sephora, aren't I?

You won't be able to replace every makeup product for $100 at Sephora, so you'll have to prioritize a bit. Ask for samples of things you'd like to try though!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.
I'm leaning towards a palette, mascara, and a good powder foundation. Naked 3 looks like it comes with some primer, so I will start with that.
As amazing as the brow pencil @smo suggested is, I might try a cheap one first until I get the hang of doing it before I go for the expensive one.
I think I'm OK with my cheaper lipsticks for now.
I work from home, so I don't bother with make up every day, but at least this will get me started, and in a month or two, I can add a few more items.
Do you guys do any of the monthly beauty boxes? I signed up for Julep last month only because the first box was free (well, $4 for shipping), but I'm not sold that it's a good deal for the long term.

I'm still learning too, but I'll plug the Naked Basics palette again. It looks great on almost everyone, and it's actually hard to make it look bad because all the colors go together so well - it's great for learning blending etc.
Eyeliner - my personal preference is to use a dark eyeshadow as liner (Crave in the Naked Basics palette is perfect). I don't like such a dark line as from pencil/gel/liquid for work, and if I apply it slightly wrong it looks awful. And I am not great at making a good line yet
Brushes - the jump from drugstore eyeshadow foam things to real brushes made the biggest difference for me. DH gave me this set for my birthday because I had nothing, and I use 8/12 brushes most days. I use this cleaning spray on them every day.
I'm saving this thread - lots of great recommendations! I still need to figure out good products for my brows and lips and settle on a better concealer.

If you have green eyes, you want purple eyeshadow. I like the Chanel Ombres palette. Sorry for the giant close up of my eye, but I don't like pictures of my face floating around online. I also use Laura Mercier's eyeliner pencil in plumb, smudged with the darkest color in that Chanel palette.

It won't let me modify to add another picture. here's another picture with different light and one without my mascara and under eye concealer to demonstrate the awesomeness of Laura's concealer and secret finishing powder, as well as her full blown volume mascara.

Ok. Most of this makeup chat was over my head. I'm super minimalist, but love tarte Amazonian bb cream and well as there maracuja blush and glow bright enter. Those two things plus my cheap mascara and Burt's bees lipgloss keep me from looking dead and they feel good.
That said, I'll probably buy a naked pallette soon just because the cool kids are doing it.

For a powder foundation, I really love MAC Studio Fix powder. I've been wearing it for years. I love make up, so every so often I decide I'm in a rut and I try a different foundation. I've tried tinted moisturizers, other powders, liquid (although it's been a while since I used a real liquid), but I always come back to Studio Fix. It comes in a compact with a sponge, but it goes on much nicer with a brush. To start out with, I'd just use the sponge and upgrade later. You can't get it at Sephora, though.
Like others, I think higher end eye shadow is worth it. If only Naked 1 comes with the free primer, I'd definitely get that one. The Urban Decay Primer Potion is a great eye shadow primer, and a good primer makes a world of difference.
For eye liner, I like liquid, but it is hard to get the hang of. There is a drug store that's pretty good, but I can't think of it now. Almay maybe?? But if you're just getting started, you can skip the eye liner.
There are plenty of decent drug store mascaras and lipsticks.
So, if you buy Studio Fix for $35 (I think), Naked 1 (with primer) for $50, that leaves you $15 or so to spend at Target on mascara and lipstick. All you'd still need is blush for a "full face" of make up (ie, foundation, blush, eye make up, lipstick). I like Nars for blush, but I think you can find a cheaper one.
As you play more with make up and start having fun with it, you can add eye liner, more expensive mascara, concealer, highlighter, bronzer, face primer, eyebrow tools, and other lip products.
That's what I'd do, anyway :-). Get the stuff that you can at the drugstore, then save the expensive lines for the products where it makes the biggest impact.

The 3 came with a sample card of 4? 5? different UD primers.

Oh, that's fun. I was thinking it was weird that only 1 came with primer. It's a small tube, but it lasted me awhile. I like the UD dark brown primer maybe even more than the neutral one. I wear it alone sometimes.
I didn't read the thread but I would like to recommend Nars products and this Benefit mascara. It is the best I have ever used and I buy and use A LOT of mascara (I have an obsession with trying to make my short lashes be long and thick):
I absolute HATE this mascara. I love Bad Gal Lash, but this this stuff was a huge waste of money--it's. Polarizing mascara, ha!

OK dumb question. Why are there different primers?

4 primers. All of them terrible beyond the original in my opinion.
I was SO disappointed with 3--I'm super pale and look good in pinks and golds, but the pinks were too light and the dark colors are too greyish for me.
I vote you skip the Naked palettes entirely, and choose a great set of purples. I love my naked 1, but I have blue eyes and more neutral skin tone, some I'm not sure if it would look great on you.

Thanks for the powder rec.I'm Ok with going a little over $100, I'm just trying not to go insane.
Sephora is 10 minutes from my house, and the department stores are farther and require getting on a highway, so my plan is to get most of the stuff there because I am lazy.
Though I do have a $70 on an old Macy's card. Hmmmm....

Interesting. I had liked it because some of the pinks were kind of plum-like. I'm not into gray. From what I've seen online, 1 is going to be to orange/coppery for me. I love the variety of shades in 2, but it looks like too much shimmer.
I'll go wander around Sephora and see what they have.
I haven't read a single reply, but wanted to say that I've been a loyal Bare Minerals user for years until about 3 months ago when I found this. I LOVE it. It feels great, doesn't streak or clump and my skin looks fabulous.
I do think that bare minerals makes some of the best eye shadows. They're really pretty and stay on all day.

I would just test it out. But I think you can find something else entirely that is soley purple-y. My friend found a nice Sephora brand quad for like $12.
