My makeup strategy forever has been to look like I'm not wearing makeup, so really simple and clean and dewy looking. I think this is why I have always been eyeshadow adverse. What's the best way to achieve a dewy effortless look? And how can I incorporate shadows?
When people talk about highlighters what are they referring to?
Does the UD BB cream look good on the freakishly pale? Could I get away with it as a standalone foundation?
Has anyone used the ELF HD powder?
What is the best concealer? Primer?
I should probably just suck it up and go to Sephora huh? That store really terrifies me. Those ladies are glamazonians.
This thread has been very thought provoking for me. Ha. Thanks ESF!
Highlighters are either a powder or cream that you put in areas where light should hit your face.
I use highlighting a lot more than bronzer/contouring in the winter, because I am pretty fair skinned.
I don't know about UD BB cream specifically, but most BB creams blend into your skin really well - which is why I like them. I fall in between the most fair colors and the next step darker most of the year (only in the summer when I have a bit of color does this change) so finding the right foundation is next to impossible for me. I find that BB creams even out my skintone and blend in so I don't have the effect of my makeup looking too dark or too light. I then use a loose powder over it (I like Chanel's, but I get a discount on it - it's kind of pricey - lasts forever though!). I have also just used it without powder so for me it is pretty stand alone (bb cream, in general).
I have not used the ELF powder but have heard good things.
Best concealer - I think this varies depending on your needs. I like the bobbi brown corrector/concealer set up, but I also like some Chanel concealer I have. I also really like benefit's erase paste - it's a brightening concealer. Ole Henriksen has a product I want to try that is a CC eye cream - so it's a color corrector/concealer. I have dark circles and it supposedly treats them as well.
I actually don't use a primer anymore. I used to, when I wore regular foundation but now that I go between BB creams or just Origins Vitazing (moisturizer that evens skin tone), I don't bother.
As far as BB creams go, I think it was NewOrleans that mentioned the Asians ones. eclaires turned me on to one, and I can't find my link to it, but I love it. It's an Asian one and it's not real expensive. I got mine on Amazon. I use it as a foundation and while it seems like it's going on heavy, once it blends to your skin, it's really not at all. On days that I'm just going to the office (where it's super casual) I use the BB cream, some cream blush, eyeliner, mascara and finishing powder. Done. I have this blush/lip gloss combo thing I use from a line called "it" (I think). I know they carry it at Ulta, so I'll have to go find it to link it. I really love it.
Is it the one in the pink bottle? I really do like the Asian bb creams - the US market has a lot now, but the Asian ones are allegedly the best.

This must be what I have. I got it from Deb who got it at some promotional event that she attended. It's really great. Like I said, I use it as a cream blush.

I stumbled across this blogger and I'm kind of in love.
She does a LOT of side-by-side comparisons (so, for instance, she took a bunch of eye primers and compared them over four hours with the same eyeshadow), and a lot of testing of claims. She also gauges price by the ounce, where you find that some drugstore stuff is (surprisingly) more expensive because there's less of it!

Is it bad that I really want the brightest bulb blogger to close her mouth? She's almost as bad as Jessica Simpson.
ETA: I should say, though, she's great with color use. I like that she goes for the out of the norm neutrals.
I'm right there with you - not a fan of that pose and it's kind of distracting in posts with lots of face pics... But I'm liking her posts and getting sucked into this blog tonight.
So I put my nice makeup on today and I felt like I should give you all a report.
After 3 hours in the car, 2 hours wandering around on a very windy and sunny beach with the dog, lunch outside at a brew pub, and a stroll though a downtown, I got home to my makeup looking pretty much exactly as I had when I left, save for a teeny bit of mascara smudging on the outside corners.
Also, I don't know what the fuck kind of miracle grow they add to that They're Real mascara, but my lashes were hitting the lenses on my sunglasses. It actually started to bother me, so I had to wet my fingers and rub a little off (this may be why it smudged).

For the really pale, Too Faced and Tarte have BB creams that match Sephora's colour IQ shade 1y01 (neutral and as pale as they come). For actual foundation, Cover Girl tru blend's palest shade is the only drugstore foundation I have ever found that is pale enough for me.
Cover Girl has a concealer that matches and is cheap & very pale. At Sephora, I found the best brand with really pale concealer is Nars (Chantilly is the shade name). For under eyes, I like Mayebelline's Instant Age Rewind in the pink shade, which is much easier to work with than a "skin tone" one that is too orange.
For the record, Sephora colour matched me as 1y01, but Makeup Forever's foundation was too orangey/dark for me, so I can sympathize with the struggles of extremely pale skin.

Step one of fixing a problem: acknowledging you have a problem.
e.l.f. is selling their studio brush set (beloved by bloggers everywhere) for $3 with a $30 purchase on their website. And they'll do free shipping at $35. Deal ends today, so I'm feeling a teeny tiny bit of pressure... www.eyeslipsface.com/studio/brushes/brush-sets/11_piece_brush_collection
Step one on this quest is to get a decent brush set, and this seems to fit the bill...
I think I can find $30 worth of elf stuff that would be good to have... no?
But then, I see the brush holder and think about all my brushes just thrown helter skelter into my makeup bag and maybe I can find $30 worth of stuff there.
apparently their Kabuki brush is amazing, and even though I have ABSOLUTELY no use for one, I want it anyway.
I'm going to go to the store and ask there, but I thought I'd throw this out here too - I want to pick up something that will essentially be an all-in-one palette for travel. It'd need to do both day and nighttime looks - but nighttime is the more important one. I need it for times when I have to pack LIGHT, so size is at a premium. I do not want one that has those little trays of lip color because they seem like they always get fucking gross with random flakes of eyeshadow wandering into them.
Medium-light skin tone - I haven't got the slightest clue if it's warm or cool, reddish brown hair, dark brown eyes.
but it's sold out of course. It was their email sale item the other day and sold out before I could jump on it.
to go with that...travel brush case? All the brushes I have (which is just a small selection) have ridiculously long handles. Where would you recommend I look for the absolute must-haves but in a nice short packable size?

Now that I am totes the make up expert around here, I will say that my Tarte Amazonian Escape palette would be a good bet. Two blushes, 6 eyeshadows, a laminated card with a day look and a night look, all in a really cute purple clutch. But it's bigger than what you posted, maybe like 8 by 4 inches?
I would also love to find short brushes. When I'm not wearing my glasses, I need to get closer to the mirror than the long brushes will allow.
MAC travel brush sets are my favorite. They usually have a bunch of options around Christmas as gift sets but I think they have them at other times of the year too.
Also I stopped in Sephora today and it was empty, so I let them do their color IQ thing on me for foundation. It was pretty cool, so I recommend checking it out if you are looking for new foundation. It also lets you limit the results by what type of coverage you want. I ended up getting samples of 3 different things to try.
I tried my Urban Decay Naked BB cream today and OMG. Love. It was like putting a not-quite-but-almost transparent gauze over my face that just sort of smoothed everything out. I feel like I could have worn just that as foundation.
I will report back in a few days to let you know if I still love it.

I wear that kind of thing (or Origins Vitazing) with just loose powder and concealer.
If I was in a rush, if be willing to wear just that plus some eyeliner and mascara.
I do this a lot in the summer when we go to the pool. It's easy to apply, but evens out my skin tone more than enough for spending the day at the pool.
After neglecting ALL THE THINGS I did some research and just ordered all of the following:
- ELF HD powder - ELF eye primer - Bare minerals pressed concealor (I already wear BE powder foundation) - Tarte BB cream - Revlon photo ready mascara - cover girl outlast lipstain in nude kiss and loreal 8 hr gloss in blush
AND
- Naked 3 from Sephora.com
As for the Sephora purchase....did you know that you can get a free allure subscription with a $25 purchase? Did you also know that if you don't take the Allure subscription sephora will send you a $10 rebate? So basically I just got Naked 3 for $42! Maybe all you insiders knew this.
Anyway a mix of high and low stuff. Didn't step into a store. Just used this thread, and some videos, and reviews, to figure it out. Could be a big fail! But we'll see.

Did your Ulta have any? Mine has several and I also spotted a couple just now at Target.

I haven't checked yet. I don't know what brands of brushes are good except MAC since that's been mentioned here several times. from poking around online it looks like mac's travel brush sets are only around at the holidays. eclaires

this is what I do-- I don't wear foundation. I am new to BB cream and don't have any recs to anyone, though.
