I was intimidated too, I had never worn makeup until my wedding 8 months ago - I learned the basics and did my own. Since then I've been experimenting with getting my routine down. Now I'm comfortable enough with which brushes do which things, which colors should go where on the eye. Once you pick a strategy it's surprisingly fast to use 3-5 different eyeshadows and several brushes.

See, I'm one of those who never regularly wears makeup, like AT ALL. If I'm feeling superfancypants I'll wear tinted lip gloss. I've always had 'event' makeup (things like Viva Glam lipstick, which in its many iterations always seemed to work for me) but nothing for everyday.
I think I want to start a little, but don't want to go crazy with overdo or with $$$.
Dark hair, slightly going grey. Brown eyes with flecks of yellow. Years ago when I got a Prescriptives foundation made, it had yellow and orange in it, not pink. I have VERY pale skin.
I'm 45, but genuinely don't look it (although, I feel like my looks are starting to catch up to my age in the last few years, which is why I'm thinking of starting)... which means that I think I need to be a bit more conservative with things like glitter and color, so as not to look like a fool.
Thoughts?
A bunch of stuff from Target would be killer, but I know that's probably not realistic...

A few of us agree in here on Loreal liquid eyeliners and some mascaras. I have a couple Sonia Kushuk eye brushes that I bought on clearance and like them, so I would be inclined to try her eye shadow. There is one I have seen... The neutral pallette, I think? It looks really nice. I have a Nyx jumbo eye pencil that I use in untraditional ways, and I really love that product, so I would also be inclined to try some of their other products. That said, I once upon a time used CG, Almay, and Maybelline eye shadows, and they are dreadful.
I have not had much luck with Elf. Once I bought a lipgloss... Junk. I just decided to try their brushes... Junk. I wanted a cheap, sort of wet eye pencil just to use as a base to give my shadow(being used as eyeliner under the eye) something to stick to, so I got their jumbo eye stick thing... Junk. It barely comes off the pencil, literally. Weird. I have heard their HD powder is great, but I really don't like the other products from them I have used.

aw, thanks @smorriso You're sweet.
Thanks to all of you, I spent all afternoon reading blogs and reviews of good inexpensive makeup.
DAMN YOU ALL. I may have to go BUY ALL THE STUFF!!!!
Honestly, I think SMo's right... I think a good tinted moisturizer (or even a BB, no?) plus mascara, lip gloss, maybe blush is probably the way to go. I also feel like I'm starting with the dark circles under my eyes, so I'm looking for a little resolution in that department.
Part of my problem (if you can call it that) is that, at 45, I've never worn makeup regularly. My mom's 70 and never did either, and convinced me young that the best way to have good skin is to not mess with it at ALL. But I'm starting to feel my age... and look it a little, too...
If you don't wear it at all, then I would maybe go with a light tinted moisturizer and mascara. A pretty natural gloss (try the UD Naked Nourishing Gloss - I have it and it's really like an amped up lip balm), and maybe a light blush. Done. Especially on you Momi, I've seen your pics on here and fb, and you're gorgeous au natural. If I were to say bare bare minimal makeup, honestly mascara and blush.
It's funny, because I JUST remembered that I went through a tinted-moisturizer phase for a while... it was Benefit You Rebel (which I see they still sell) with Benetint and High Beam. And one of those lip glosses with cinnamon or cayenne or something else to make you naturally color.
b/c of this thread, i went to sephora tonight. LB was with me and that was a huge mistake but tomorrow i am grabbing a coffee and walking my ass around the store for an hour.
s/o would you free weird that the counter girl - the one doing makeovers when i was there - a guy?
There used to be a male sales clerk at my local Sephora who did his own makeup and looked prettier than I ever will. True story.
I was at Sephora today as well, with DD. I've been using a tinted moisturizer/sunscreen for ages as my foundation because I'm fair with mildly uneven skin tone, so I love the instant color. My only complaint is that the one I use has a somewhat shiny look so I have to really tamp it down with powder.
Anyway, while at Sephora, I spotted the Urban Decay Naked BB Cream and tried it on the back of my hand. At first I was almost disgusted because it went on so thin and runny, but then it dried and was smooth as a baby's bum. I was shocked. I bought the travel size and will give it a whirl. I think it might be good during hotter weather as a way to control sweat and oil.
lol at us, everyone racing to Sephora (and Mac) this weekend. Sometimes repeatedly.
I know, I'm almost embarrassed that I did since I am instinctively contrarian.
We happened to have an amazingly warm day today (quite the sea change from the Winter From Hell) so I grabbed DD and we walked to our local mall because I wanted to enjoy the weather. Walla, Sephora visit.

LOL
I have been looking at makeup stuff ALL DAY.
I've got $70 on a Macy's card from a return ages ago. I'm going to be near a Macy's on Thursday. I want more makeup and I haven't even used most of the stuff I bought.
Unfortunately, I think they are also out of Naked 3.
I feel like we need to have some sort of big CEP sleep over where we do makeovers and drink wine.
Also, for a month or so, I've been toying with the idea of staring my own youtube channel about beauty, would you all watch it and possibly be interested? I might need y'all to run in and scare away the haters who post mean comments.
Yes to all of this!!
I read the comments on makeup tutorials and 99% of them are supportive and kind (or questions, LOL). The random mean comment is either a lonely island of stupidity or booed off the board.

I thought of you today because my Sephora had a thousand Naked Palettes.

What did you buy?!?!
Just Urban Decay Naked BB Cream (I posted about it above). I actually wasn't intending to shop and DD was with me, so exploring wasn't easy, although she was happy to play at the nail polish station with those little plastic nail polish sample squares. I plan to return without her in tow.

added to my list.
i need something to even out my tone.
Just know that it takes a little bit to come up to color. I have a pink nose and chin and it evens out but not right away. Give it 2-3 minutes.
Speaking of Pinterest ( well I was! Lol) mominatrix yours is cracking me up right now, in a good way.
I can't deny it... It's pretty much all about keeping track...
But, in my defense, the amount of stuff out there is staggering... I need to keep it all in one place, particularly because I'm trying to find budget friendly alternatives.
My makeup strategy forever has been to look like I'm not wearing makeup, so really simple and clean and dewy looking. I think this is why I have always been eyeshadow adverse. What's the best way to achieve a dewy effortless look? And how can I incorporate shadows?
When people talk about highlighters what are they referring to?
Does the UD BB cream look good on the freakishly pale? Could I get away with it as a standalone foundation?
Has anyone used the ELF HD powder?
What is the best concealer? Primer?
I should probably just suck it up and go to Sephora huh? That store really terrifies me. Those ladies are glamazonians.
This thread has been very thought provoking for me. Ha. Thanks ESF!

I am dragging everyone to the dark side with me.
I don't know what BB cream is and am really new to foundation generally but I will say that after wandering around like a deer in the headlights at Sephora, I'm quite pleased with the Benefits foundation kit (which I think is only available at Sephora). It's got a few different products in it, which should help me figure out what I actually like. That said, I got the "fair" palette, which was the lightest one, and it's not super pale. I'm pretty pasty, but years of freckles and sunburns have darkened the skin on my face, so it's less fair than the rest of me. The "fair" kit works perfectly for my skin, but might be too dark if you are more porcelain.
heyjude, you can look up makeup reviews on YouTube for a lot of specific products. I googled The UD Naked BB cream and watched how people applied it and what they thought. I also read the comments to see if most users agreed with the review. It was all very helpful.
As for a non-makeup look using eyeshadow, I'm learning that so much of it for me is the amount of powder I put on the brush in combination with the amount of pressure I apply. If I tap the brush before applying and use a very light touch, I get a much lighter, more natural look with the darker powders. Too much pressure and I look like someone punched me.
I will toss out another Naked Palette Basic mention. Four of the colors are very light and neutral and if I stuck with just those + light touch, I could look nearly eyeshadow-free, but polished. The two darker colors are great for more color and eyeliner. Again, there are a lot of YouTube tutorials that can really help.
As for best concealer, I will sit here and wait for advice. I currently use Bobbi Brown concealer and corrector and they are pretty good (the key seems to be good blending), but I have allergy/genetic circles and always love hearing about others.

A bunch of stuff from Target would be killer, but I know that's probably not realistic...
I think getting foundation right is the single most important step. Target can be fine for eye shadow, mascara, and even lipstick, but IMO you really do need to go to Sephora or a good department store makeup counter to find foundation. Bobbi Brow is great for yellow undertones, and she has a lot of sheer formula options. I also think a makeup primer is a good place to splurge. Have the person at the makeup counter apply eye makeup on you, too. Pay attention to the shades she uses, and then look for something similar at Target.
heyjude, I'd consider a cream blush. Stila makes great ones, I think poppy is a universal color. Also, if you don't want to wear shadow, a MAC paint pot in painterly (more pink) or soft ochre (more yellow) can be used to just even out eyelid color. It can crease if you use too much, so I tend to put a little translucent or face powder over it and go. My eyelids look less splotchy purple, and it pairs well with a natural look and mascara.
Also, the paint pots last FOREVER. I bought my last one over a year ago, and just hit pan (or jar rather) maybe a month ago with still a ton of product left.
I second this - I wear the paint pot bare study every day, and that's it. It gives me a little glow-y effect on my eye (it's kind of a champagne-y color) so it brightens the area without looking like I have much makeup on.
As far as BB creams go, I think it was NewOrleans that mentioned the Asians ones. eclaires turned me on to one, and I can't find my link to it, but I love it. It's an Asian one and it's not real expensive. I got mine on Amazon. I use it as a foundation and while it seems like it's going on heavy, once it blends to your skin, it's really not at all. On days that I'm just going to the office (where it's super casual) I use the BB cream, some cream blush, eyeliner, mascara and finishing powder. Done. I have this blush/lip gloss combo thing I use from a line called "it" (I think). I know they carry it at Ulta, so I'll have to go find it to link it. I really love it.
