Gulf War. We were living overseas at the time and school was closed for a month due to bomb threats. At the time, I don't think I really understood why we were out of school but I distinctly remember watching Grease at a friend's house for the first time during that break.
Of significance? John Major winning the general election and usurping The Iron Lady. There's probably more that are kind of wishy washy before that one.
The Gulf War. I vaguely remember watching George Bush on TV announcing something. I was four. The first one I vividly remember was Clinton's election when I was six.
To all those asking ... I am 25. I am a child, I know.
You're doing better than I am... I remember Princess Diana dying, but if I'm really honest 9/11 was the first major event I connected with in terms of news coverage. I am also 25. Now I feel like a baby.
I remember having a mock election in kindergarten or first grade. Clinton won at my elementary school and he won the real election for his first term.
I voted for Clinton, my little boyfriend voted for Ross Perot. We argued about it on the bus. I'm sure we were debating the candidates economic plans or stance on social issues. Or who colors better or something.
I was just coming to say this. The first political/historical event I can fairly vividly remember is "voting" in the '92 election in first grade. We all felt like such big shots because we got to fill out a ballot and go behind a curtain to vote privately. I do not remember who I voted for though.
Dude, holy fuck. This happened the summer before my SENIOR YEAR IN COLLEGE.
Right? I was like, I have pretty clear memories of having a drink watching that coverage. And I don't mean of breast milk.
I had graduated college and was attending my brother's PhD graduation the day of her funeral. And I voted for Clinton--not in a school mock election, like had to leave work early to stand in line and vote.
I'd probably remember Elvis dying if we'd been in the US at that point--neither of my parents were big fans. Don't remember John Lennon dying either, for the same reason. I do remember my mom curled up in bed crying when Karen Carpenter died.
I remember that the Iran Hostage Crisis was happening, but not specifically when it ended. I do remember the phone call with my dad when he called to tell us Sadat had been assassinated.
To all those asking ... I am 25. I am a child, I know.

Hah hah. I jumped to that first but thought really really hard.
Probably Bill Clinton's first presidential campaign and win. I was 7-ish? I'm googling things I remember and this seems to be the earliest I can find.
The only reason I remember it is because my dad haaaaaaaaaaaaaaated Bill Clinton. He jokingly put a table on the front porch for family to sit at who voted for Clinton. LOL, you cantankerous old man. LOL.
Pretty much this. I was 6 when he was elected and my parents hated him, so I remember it well lol.
I remember we were all in the classroom watching the shuttle take off. Then the explosion happened. It was so quiet in the classroom. I don't remember how the teachers handled it afterwards, only the explosion itself.

I was 11 and in the sixth grade when The Challenger exploded and I do remember it vividly.
I didn't realize, at first, what had happened, though. I was super naive, had never seen a shuttle launch and they turned off the TV so quickly, I didn't know something was wrong until they herded us out of the library and sat us down to help us process things.
Why the shock at the first memory being Princess Diana's death, but not at the earlier people who said the Lewinsky scandal? Princess Di died in '97, but the Lewinsky scandal didn't come to light until '98.
I think either the energy crisis in 1979 or the Iran hostage release in 1981. I was 8 and 9 1/2 respectively. I'm not sure if I really remember the energy crisis or just remember it being on the news every.single.night but the hostage release I remember very clearly.
