Would you go to see a psychiatrist who

I'm helping DH get his website together. He had wanted something like this:

We can all agree that would have been a baaaaad idea. I countered with the photo above.

ETA: It ties in with his "philosophy" section content and isn't the same path through the redwoods / stack of zen rocks / golden gate bridge photos that all the other local psychiatrists use.

I think any stock images would be a turn off and make the business seem cheaper? I guess?

I'd rather just see a photo of the medical professional and appropriate diagrams etc. but that may be my scientist showing.

My ob's office has artsy photos of their waiting area as their background. I liked that too.

I just like anything that looks nongeneric and professional. The puzzle is a little cutesy for me, but not problematic.

Good point about autism. Especially since it is psych that isn't that far off.

I made a number of suggestions. This is the one he picked up on.

@stella: Yeah. I argued against stock photos, but it isn't my website. He wanted a brain diagram (in neon blue). The neon was a bit much and many other brain pictures are hit or miss in their appeal.

@scottydeux: his experience and credentials are fantastic so he'll be fine if that is what people are judging :-)

A friend of mine's husband is a therapist (not the same, obv.) and I just went through his website. It's all very zen- wood grain background on most pages, then one page has interior shots of the office/meeting room, and his headshot on the "about me" page. I like that it's simple/unfussy, and that as a newcomer you can imagine talking with him in the space itself- it's approachable.

He has a FB page for his company too, which also includes a few thematic shots of stacked rocks and his business cards (that have a sumi-é stacked rock motif).



Your H needs to lose that crazy image he picked. It's a bit freaky/led zepplin/new age for most people's tastes.
Your puzzle image is okay, but those pieces don't actually fit together and that stood out to me.

You did not ask for this feedback - but my counselor offers a way to book online (and he has multiple offices, etcs) for existing patients. (new patients have to call) Existing patients can still call.

This is nice if you are in a panic and want to know that there are options. My counselor was always in sessions, so it was nicer than leaving a message and wondering. At the least you could easily know which side of town he would be on depending on the weekday.

I also like when you can easily see if they are taking new patients and what types of insurance are accepted.

I've argued this a number of times. I've got him down to one photo from 5 per page - most neon or even wackier alex grey images. I'm just trying to get thing up and running.

His photo and credentials will be on the "about me" page.

Oh and even better, contact Berkley or a local art school with a digital storytelling/digital graphic design MFA program. Have a student create the website. It'll probably be cheaper than hiring IDEO and you'll give him/her another reference for their portfolio.

If you want to use the puzzle piece, but stay away from the autism link, try a different color. Autism awareness stuff is frequently blue.

The photo (either choice) probably wouldn't alter my choice. I do like to see a photo of the medical provider, but I tend to ignore other images.

I look for where they went to school, where they did their residency/residencies, any hospital admitting privileges, and their board certification, as well as the obvious location, fees, insurance accepted, etc. It makes my life easier if there is a new patient page that has pdfs of all the new patient paperwork.

Honestly, almost every medical provider that I haven't gone with because of their website was a direct result of their philosophy page. If there is anything there that I don't agree with and there is another provider option that doesn't have the page, I'll probably choose the provider that doesn't have a philosophy page.
