I'm buying a Beco Butterfly II on Thursday. It's to dang hot to be wearing a moby in this Florida heat. I want a TULA, but I'm poor & DH is already scoffing at me spending $70 on a beco. That's all I've got.
yes! I'm thinking I want a wrap, but don't know where to start.
we have an ergo and a maya ring sling. h loves the ergo, but it fits me weird - I have a long torso and it rides up on my hips. I want to love my ring sling, but I just don't.
I originally had a Beco Gemini, which H and I really liked, but I decided to upgrade to a Beco Soleil when DS was about ten months old. It is less padded through the body than the Gemini, but has a wider and taller panel to better accommodate an older baby or toddler. The downside is the Soleil does not work with young infants without an additional insert, whereas the Gemini did. However, we are unsure whether we will have a second child, so the trade-off was worthwhile for us.
I am 5'2" with a small-to-medium frame. H is 6'3" and thin. Both Beco carriers have been comfortable for us. We both tried the Ergo carrier and neither of us liked it (too long for me and the shoulder straps were too wide-set; H just didn't like how bulky it is, and honestly, we also both thought it was ugly).
Does anybody else use backpacking type carriers? We've been using a Kelty FC1, but now that ds is in the 25 pound range I've been eyeing Deuters. I tried on a Deuter Kid Comfort III at the consignment store and it was NICE!!!
I rented a Beco Soleil and liked it. However, I was not a fan of the two handed buckle and pinched my fingers a few times. I also couldn't get DS in it well to take the weight off my shoulders (as a newborn). I wouldn't recommend people using it as a carrier for newborns, even with the insert.
I have a k'tan that I primarily use at home. It's ok. It's not the easiest to get on with DS.
I bought an Ergo Sport used from another mmmer and we like it so far. I'm not a huge fan of the straps though, the plastic part hits right between my arms and waist. Plus I couldn't get it tight enough around my PP belly to keep DS' feet from poking through the bottom in froggy position. It's too small to get his feet/legs to stick out the sides yet.
DS is 7 weeks old and ~10 lbs. He's also on the short side. I'm 5'4".
I have an Ergo a Sport that I hate. There was so much pressure on the back of my neck. I couldn't stand it. I really wanted the straps to X across my back to put the support someplace else. So what is the carrier for me?
I also have a maya wrap that I like much better, but not in an "I could stroll around like this all day" sorta way. It definitely gets uncomfortable rather quickly.

I had a Baby Bjorn when DS was born because I didn't know better. I used it a handful of times and have since donated it, it's terribly uncomfortable.
I also have a Moby Wrap that I liked pretty well although I found it to be really hot to wear in the summer when DS was a newborn. I plan to use it again with this one, especially around the house.
Used a borrowed Ergo for 2-3 months when DS was around 5-7 months. I loved it compared to the Bjorn but am looking for one that might fit a larger baby better.
I am currently planning to get a Beco Soleil for this second baby. I would prefer a Tula but I need something I can buy on Amazon because I have credit to spend and can't afford to spend the money outright. The Beco Soleil seems like a good fit for tall mamas with tall chubby babies from what I've read.

The Onya might be a good option. It's another soft structured buckle carrier but the straps cross. www.theportablebaby.com/onya.html
I've never even heard of that one, lol. But I'm making a note! Thanks
Msniq got a Solly Wrap for the newborn days. It's a lot like the Moby wrap, but much lighter weight. This is the only picture I have that shows the whole thing in use. V is about 2 weeks old.
Here's V in the Ergo with the infant insert. It wasn't so bad early on, but because he was so tall and skinny (75th/5th percentile height/weight) it got very awkward until he hit 12 lbs.
Here's V's first time front-facing in msniq's Beco Gemini. He's just under 3 months, but his head control has generally been pretty good. I know extended front-facing sessions are considered harmful, it's definitely a sometimes treat for him.
I've a Beco Soleil and wish I'd known about ssc's when dd1 was a baby!!
I'm 5'6", medium build with a long torso. Dd2 is 6+mths, 27inches and 15.75lb.
I rented both a soleil and a lillebaby, thinking I'd like to have a forward facing option. Whilst I did like the lillebaby and wanted to like it more, I went for a soleil in the end because I could cross the straps. In the "normal" position I felt that the straps were slipping off my shoulders.
Dd2 links being carried most of the time and frequently naps in it. I've never used the infant insert because I only got it when she was 5mtgs old. I think I've used the pram only a handful of times since getting it and haven't brought the stroller out of our garage yet!
I've worn her for up to 2.5hrs or so frequently and not really felt her weight.

I will try to add pictures at some point.
We started off with the K'tan. I am 5'4" and PP around 160 lbs when I wore this, size medium. I really loved it for ease and DD loved facing out. It was invaluable when we travelled at 3 months for the airport. It is also very easy to use the bathroom in when out and about because there are no waist straps/buckles
Ergo sport - really like this, though I have a hard time buckling the yoke. I have short arms. H wore it a few times with my assistance and liked it but was never comfortable enough to babywear on his own. Now at 30.5 inches, the panel seems to be too short and narrow for DD. She kept leaning back the last time I wore her in a back carry and she's not a huge fan of FFI, because she likes to see what's going on. I never really got comfortable putting her on my back alone - she sometimes cooperated, but not always and I have a huge fear of her diving out onto her head.
Maya ring sling - love this for a hip carry, pretty much the only way I've used it. DD's favorite so far. It has a padded shoulder which is nice, but now she's 22 lbs I can't wear her for too long. It's been great when she's in her clingy phases around the house and I need to get stuff done. Also great for running into stores.
Just purchased a Babybjorn One. I wanted something that would allow me to comfortably back carry on my own. This has an interior "pocket" that the baby sits in and is buckled into, so when I swing her around to my back she is very secure. It's quite padded so may not be ideal for hot weather (though I don't babywear in hot weather really anyways) and the interior pocket would be in the way for BFing, but as an older baby carrier/FFO option carrier, so far it seems good. May add more after our trip this week when I've had a chance to use it more.

We have the Kid Comfort II and love it! It's easy to adjust for MH and DS loves it. So far we've only used it for short hikes but I'm looking forward to some longer ones this spring / summer.
To make it MM we bought it at REI and used a 20% off coupon and my dividend. EMS also has frequent 20% off coupons.
I don't have pictures, but I am 5'5" with a small frame. Here's what I have/had:
Baby K'tan: I used this when DD was small, and I loved it. It was easier than wrapping for me, and DD loved it, too.
Moby: I didn't use this because I had the K'tan.
Ergo (with infant insert): DH loved the Ergo from the start; I preferred the K'tan until DD started to outgrow it. Now (23 months, and I have no idea how tall/heavy she is) I feel like it's too short for her, so I'm itching for a toddler tula.
Dolcino 5.2 wrap in Jamaica: I suck at wrapping. I keep trying, but DD has no patience for it. I have conflicts with my local babywearing group meeting times, so I haven't gotten any better.
DD has loved being worn lately, so I need to figure out something good for toddlers. I suppose that's either figuring out wrapping or pulling the trigger on the tula. I've toyed with converting the Dolcina to a ring sling even though DD is really too big for ring slings...it'd be nice to have something poppable for her 'I want up...no, put me down...no, pick me up' days, though. Anybody with toddler have any thoughts on any of that?
I don't think I have any pics of any of these in use. But anyway, I'm 5"3 and 120lbs
Name : beco butterfly ll Used: 9-15 months Cost: $120ish I wish I'd gotten this earlier as I can see myself using it a lot in the infant days. It was very comfortable, easy to strap on once you got it adjusted to your size, and figured out the safety clips. Ds was very comfortable in it and I hardly felt his weight - he was 18lbs when I bought it. It was great to have something I could effortlessly put him in a back carry. I highly recommend anything with a back carry option to short people since even with a froggied newborn I couldn't sit down with my back straight up with ds on my front. My favorite carrier of the 3.
Name: cuddly wrap Used: 0-6 months Cost: $70 It was alright. I never got enough use out of the wrap to really get it figured out. Ds hated being worn in it as an infant, (probably because it was hot summer) so I didn't get much practice. It was comfortable though, and the fabric kept it's shape well and didn't sag. It is also quite soft. I can see me using it a lot if I got the hang of wrapping quickly and if my kid had liked being worn.
Name: second-hand unknown ring sling Used: 0-5 months Cost: n/a Dh and I both got a lot of use out of the sling when ds was an infant. It was easy to put on, take off, and adjust. Very convenient for going out and about, and also nice and cool for hot weather. Definitely a great carrier to have in general.

I live somewhere that isn't very stroller friendly so I wear my baby a lot. I'm 5'5" with a small to average frame. My H is 5'10", also small to average.
I received some pouch slings as gifts and could NEVER figure them out.
I used a Boba wrap from about 4 weeks until 5ish months. I found it very comfortable, especially for a little baby. Tying it could be annoying though. They only way I really liked to use it was if I was going to one place, for example the grocery store, and could tie it before I left home then just pop the baby in when I got to my destination. I didn't like tying it after I was out and I found it stretched out too much if I took her in and out more than about twice. My H never learned how to tie it himself.
I've used an Ergo from about 10 weeks on and use it very often. This is definitely my H's favorite carrier. I find it to be the most comfortable for long periods of time even though the straps slip off my shoulders a bit (I think because I'm short-waisted). However, I do find the buckle to be difficult to do on my own, and it's hard to carry a diaper bag and wear the Ergo at the same time.
More recently I bought a ring sling and I really like it which kind of surprised me. It is quick and easy and I like that it's small enough to fold up in my diaper bag. It's easiest for me to use when I'm alone and I find it easy to carry a diaper bag and wear the sling at the same time. I still find it pretty comfortable, but B is only about 15-16 lbs, so still pretty small.
I also have an Infantino Mei Tai that I never use. I don't really know why, I just never get around to it.
I live in Hong Kong and baby-wearing is very popular here and there are a lot of carriers I'd never seen before. One that particularly interests me is kind of like a fanny pack with a shelf on top for the baby to sit on. I think the harness part is detachable and some people just kind of carry their baby in arms and let them rest on the fanny pack thing. When the top part is attached it allows for the baby to face out while still being in a seated position. If I buy another carrier I might try one of these. (picture not mine)
I had a nice post all typed out and then the app crashed and ate it. Long story short, I've found success with the ergo. I'm 5'6 with an average frame and long torso.
Here's DS1, my curlyq, back when he was still a baldy. He's 6 months here:
I'm a carrier failure LOL. I bought a Moby for when he was itty bitty, and it overwhelmed me. I couldn't figure out how to tie it, there was fabric EVERYWHERE, he was so tiny (not actually, 9lbs 4oz at birth), I gave up. When he was 4ish months old I bought an Ergo, DH was pretty peeved to spend $80 on a carrier. The infant insert was wayyy too hot, DS sweated and cried and cried. When he finally outgrew that, the shell of the Ergo was too short, he hung out of the top of it, leaning back about to fall.
I gave away the Moby and the Ergo sits in my trunk in case of emergencies. I don't think humorous DH would fit into it though, so I really should sell it.
It's interesting to read all the people the Ergo didn't work for. The Ergo was THE SHIT when DS was born 2 years ago, like the Tula is now. You couldn't find Ergos anywhere, they sold out constantly, people hoarded them. I think mine is a counterfeit off Amazon actually! Which I didn't know existed until months after I bought it.
Let this be a lesson, I think the the Tula love right now is a bubble, which will eventually pop. I don't think they'll "hold their value" forever.
I have a k'tan which I hated and never used other than trying to figure it out in our apt when J was a brand new baby.
I have an ergo which was my favorite for a long time, other than how overheated I got in it. I then got a boba air which I liked a lot better than the ergo.
We also have an infantino somethingorother that we bought in WI when we were on vacation and realized we forgot to bring the ergo. I hate it, but it is my H's favorite (although it probably couldn't hold our kid at this point). It's one of those infamous crotch danglers
And I jumped on the Tula bandwagon and just received a Tula Toddler, which is my new favorite. I still love the Boba air, but my huge baby feels weightless in the Tula.
@ojo what do you recommend I get that I can wear both babies in? I have an ergo that I like and I used to have a Moby (lent it to a friend and it accidentally got picked up by trash guys when she left it outside for.me to pick up).
Did you use the Boba long? That looks like it could be really useful right now to hold the babies together like that.
Does anybody else use backpacking type carriers? We've been using a Kelty FC1, but now that ds is in the 25 pound range I've been eyeing Deuters. I tried on a Deuter Kid Comfort III at the consignment store and it was NICE!!!
Lurker here *waves*
We just got the Deuter Kid Comfort II and we are loving it. DD is 7 months and just over 16 pounds currently - you barely notice that she is there. We have done several hikes with it and my H even took her fishing as well. She seems to like it a lot as she can see better - we tried doing some short trips with our mei tei back carry but she hated not being able to see. Very comfy and adjusts easily between me and H (I'm 5'1" and he is just under 6') Last years models are on sale on backcountry website - not sure there is much of a difference besides color choices.
I also have a K'tan that I loved when she tiny and slept more. I have done a few short grocery trips with her in the front facing position lately which was ok.
Oh, and in terms of outerwear, I love my Boba fleece vest and my Boba hoodie. Makes me feel better to have J as covered up as possible when we take public transportation, etc.
Here's a pic of J in the boba fleece vest with me: (dark grey is the vest. I'm also wearing a light grey hoodie)
