Shalane is always a leader - it's how she runs. Desi is always a tuck in and sit back and watch kind of runner. I've been lucky enough to see them both run in person in the Olympic qualifiers here in Houston and it's how they both ran. Shalane was in front almost the whole race with Kara and Desi just sat in the back until the last few miles.
They're both very different but both run their own races for sure.
It looks like a gorgeous perfect day! So happy that our H&F ladies have beautiful weather.
I, too, wish Shalane might tuck in, but she's so competitive that maybe leading is good for her as long as no wind....
Today is gorgeous north of Boston at least. They were talking about Shalane on the radio and that is how she always runs I guess. She always pulls out in front and tries to keep it that way.
Yeah, I think this is typical Shalane, but it makes me so nervous. Watching these things always stresses me out!
This is crazy to listen to. I got so choked up listening to the start on the car ride into work. I have the radio tuned at the moment at work. Why didn't I take the day off again to go watch it?
The bottle-necking must be hard to deal with (for the non-elite runners). My largest race was about 13k with 5 waves and that was miserable. I'm sure once you start running this caliber of race you get used to it.
Some of the USN commentators are annoying. They are stumbling trying to explain how to qualify for the race.
I sometimes feel like knowing BQ standards are just a given, right? Doesn't everyone know this? Then, I realize even my husband probably has no idea. I suppose general sports fans & commentators don't exactly follow marathoning..
I would have planned that ahead of time, and planted DH on the course for a pic. "Oh, hi, here's a pic of me running Boston w/the elites!" DH snaps pic, and Then I slow the hell down.

So no pacemakers for the elites, that means no garmins or anything right? Do they have clocks posted along the way so thy know their splits at some point? Or do they literally have no idea until they cross the finish line?

Can non-elites run with watches or music?
IDK about garmins, but I thought I saw shalane look at her watch awhile ago? I would imagine they can at least have a normal watch and check their splits as they cross the mile markers.
