This shit is real. It seems to be happening in a lot of places.
Perhaps this will lead to something similar to what happened in Indiana when Richard Lugar (a long time moderate Republican) lost to Mourdock (a Tea Partier) who then crashed and burned during his campaign and subsequently lost to the Democratic candidate.
I think that's obviously the Dems hope. And I certainly would prefer that to a tea partier.
But I still think it's a bad sign that willingness to work with anyone gets you tossed for not being tough enough. The motherfucking government shut down. That should be tough enough!
Also, one thing that sucks for Virginia's 7th is that no matter what happens, they're going from being represented by someone with lots of seniority and connections to a nobody freshman. See how much gets done for you now.

I don't think the average American voter knows the importance of this.

I really doubt we are going to win Cantor's seat. I don't even think the dem candidate has a website, at least not one I can find. I am sure he never thought that he would have a chance. Funny though, he is a professor at Brat's school. That is going to be some interesting campus rivalry.
Anyway, there is really no way we will win regardless of who is running against him. There are twice as many conservatives in that district as there are liberals

I'm a resident of VA7. It's a pretty red region with a very active tea party movement. As hopeful as I am that dems will turn out in Nov, I'm pretty upset by this result. This is likely our next congressman.

I'm no fan of Cantor but for the sake of hoping that eventually political discourse in this country won't be so infused with insanity, this is terrible.
Fuck the Tea Party and their shutdown. Fuck them right in the eye.
lasagnasshole, fun fact indeed. I had no idea - that is pretty nuts.
Ok. It pulled up. I'm going to hope that since it's a cursory mention at the end, and not even listed under issues vs. Cantor, that he IS focused on our huge fiscal problems. So I'm staying optimistic.

Right? This strikes me as symbolic of this being an unsustainable direction for the GOP. It's actually kind of mind boggling that come January, there will not be a single non-Christian among the House Republicans. Sorry, guys, but that's not representative of the country.

^I am not sure laughing at his grave is the way to go here, sadly. TP in much of VA is a bit scary, imo. Brat is worried about immigrants getting amnesty. Hello more racism.

My concern with this is he is going to he forced to the far right on social issues even if he is more of a fiscal conservative. There are too many social cons in Congress right now for anything else to happen IMO. He will be forced to either vote against his party (and lose reelection in 2 years) or to join the house members on the extreme.
And you can see what happens when experienced R politicians run into issues with their newer colleagues - ie gov shutdown that I truly think most established Rs did not really want.
I think it's kind of a chicken or the egg thing for many Rs.
Now don't blame me if the first 2 pages are bi-polar.
Thank you! I probably should have waited a few minutes and let a regular start the thread. I was shocked when I saw the news and headed straight to CEP. Lol

Oh, no worries! We posted at basically the same time. You do not have to leave the posting to the regs! How else will you become a reg?
From the Dems perspective, this potentially increases their chances of taking control of the seat.
But from a broader political perspective, this is terrible. Brat ran against Cantor essentially for cooperating too much with the president on things like immigration reform and ending the government shutdown. So now if you compromise with the other party to keep the government running, you're not conservative enough? What the shit is that? Especially when we're talking about one of the most obstructionist congresses ever.
Fun fact: Cantor is the only non-Christian Republican in the House.
In my district, John Kline has a challenger running on basically the same thing. That his record is "moderate to progressive."
