The 2012 Presidential election was the GOP's Waterloo as far at the Presidency is concerned. The defeat of the number 2 guy in a primary could be the Gettysburg for the GOP in the House.
You know what's sad? My reaction is IDGAF because we are fucked either way and nothing matters.
I'm so tired of politics in this country. Every choice is terrible or more terrible. On one hand, career politicians can be good because they know what they are doing, have established relationships, etc. On the other, change is necessary but it seems like new blood is either crazier or gets drowned in the cesspool that is Washington. But the end result is things just get worse.
I can't even think about elections anymore because they depress me. Different people, same shit. Or slightly different shit that is equally bad or worse.
But I've never been a fan of Cantor and he suffers from doucheface so maybe we are better off. :-P

All due respect, but I think this attitude makes things worse.
Cantor got shitcanned for working with the other side to end a government shutdown and for CONSIDERING immigration reform. This really should worry us.
We continue to vote for people who are more and more extreme, who refuse to compromise on anything, and then we complain that Congress sucks.
If anybody thinks Dave Brat is going to improve the climate in the Capitol, I've got a bridge to sell you. For ONE MILLION DOLLARS.
And I say this as someone who doesn't like Cantor.

That's kind of my point though. That regardless, neither option is good, and even though I'm not a Cantor fan, or a fan of most Rs in Washington right now, the replacements aren't good either. You'd be hard pressed to find someone more upset by Lugar's primary loss than me.
At the same time, is the status quo really good right now? I'd say no. But the alternative appears to suck pretty hard as well. So what's the solution? I honestly can't see one.
And maybe the root problem is über conservative tea partiers but it's not like we can turn back time and make them all disappear, so again I'm not sure what the solution is. At the end of the day, my opinion is that the choices we have on who to vote for are hardly choices at all. And it's fucking depressing.

Wait...what? Clearly seeing that there really are no good options makes it worse? I can't get behind that. The climate in Washington is fucked. It's not going to magically fix by sticking with the status quo. Maybe it has to get worse before it gets better. Maybe there will be newbies that can accomplish something. But an honest take that the choices out there aren't quality choices isn't hurtling us towards anything but truth. And KOKO keeps us in this stagnant cesspool indefinitely.

Sixteen percent of House members are freshmen. That got us a government shutdown.
I do not think that saying there are no good choices is horrible, but eclaires said "nothing matters." I disagree, and I think that attitude is problematic.
Cantor, as much as I don't like him, did help to end the shutdown, which yes, included raising the debt ceiling (one of Brat's major issues). He has also expressed interest, nothing else, in immigration reform. And for that, he is getting kicked out potentially in favor of someone more extreme to the right.
To say that it doesn't matter whether the Republicans have a single non-Christian in the House who will OCCASIONALLY try to find a moderate ground vs. a Tea Partier who thinks we need to build a wall at our southern border (excuse me, "secure our border") is just...yeah, I think that makes things worse. When people don't think there is any difference between the two, that's how we end up with these extreme candidates and Ted Cuz reading Green Eggs & Ham on the floor of the Senate.
Things may be broken in Congress, but absolutely nothing points to the source of the problem being that Republicans are too liberal. So I really don't see how electing more extreme conservatives solves anything.

Maybe, but I think that is wishful thinking, esp since this was the dems in, what, 2006? I think redistricting will counter this death of the GOP. I think it will be hard for them to get to the White House. But controlling the house and senate? Not so much.
I have no opinion on this because I need to see how it plays out. However, I'm shocked that it happened.
That's my current position on politics as a whole. Kill me for saying it, but Obama is a fuck up and so is everyone else who is around. I'm not sure I can believe anyone's rhetoric any more. So I'm just gonna sit back and see how shit plays out. Eric Cantor isn't out for compromising or working with anyone or whatever. He is out because people are sick of all of the useless bullshit and want everyone gone.
I doubt this guy in particular is going to be some huge change but I'm willing to hang out and see if anyone surprises me.

Maybe the Republicans need to fall flat on their fucking faces to get a damned clue, idk.
But I think it's damned rich for someone to tsk tsk the world weariness we conservatives feel considering that neither party gives a shit what we want or what we care about. But I forgot, we're just supposed to magically be totally in line with what Dems want for the nation.
I'm glad there's a dose if reality in this thread. So many people in my FB feed are loling over this. Really not funny when you stop to think about it.

No, I am not and have never said that you're supposed to fall magically in line with the Dems. That's a lazy argument, and you know it.
I genuinely believe that the increased divide between the parties is bad for the country. It has produced one of the least productive congresses in history, and I think that's bad. That Congress also has a lot of new members, who rode in on the tea party movement. I have seen zero evidence that this "new blood" has accomplished anything worthwhile.
I am really disturbed that Cantor had to run ads declaring he opposed amnesty for "illegals" because his willingness to think about working with the Obama administration on immigration reform. I am bothered that we are getting to a point where thinking about working with the other side to find a workable solution to a problem gets you the boot.
I never said that conservatives have to fall in line with Democrats. And I never said the choices aren't bad. But I disagree that the differences between Cantor and Brat don't matter because nothing matters. I really don't think that idea should be considered flammable.

I don't think its as simple as just throwing everyone out. If it was, Graham and McConnell would be gone also and they won handily. The reason must be something more specific to Cantor or Brat - or their district.
The summary is Cantor lost because he became a shitty congressman and was overly focused on becoming speaker. His staff are assholes. His constituents wanted someone to represent them, not spend all day running the majority and making nice with lobbyists. Immigration was just a big issue his opposition picked to convince his constituents Cantor breaks promises and gives no damns what they want because K street is his real constituency.
Especially as I just looked at the VA-7 map. As much as I'd love to, I can't imagine a Democrat winning there. Prove me wrong, district-painstakingly-formed-to-exclude-the-city-of-Richmond!

I need all summaries of everything to be written like this.

I'd like to read more details about this. My first thought was "Of course Cantor had other responsibilities if he's the Majority Leader," so I wonder if all his media-covered actions pertaining to that job made it seem to his constituents that he wasn't paying attention to their concerns? I don't know. That's why I'd like to read more.
