I can't find it now, but a couple pages back did somebody here say that a military plane was in the same area at the time? Is this like a mistaken identity thing or do you think the military plane was using the flight path of the commercial flight to help provide cover?
That is straight-up wrong if a Ukraine military plane was covertly using a commercial plane as cover. That doesn't really happen, right?
I'm interested in hearing more about this too. If that's what's been going on, that's...concerning to say the least.
I just read on an airline pilot forum the fuel tanks were intact before hitting the ground.
Most of the fuel for a 777 is stored in its wings, so it should be pretty easy to determine if a statement like this is true based on how far the plane cruised after it was damaged. (If the wings are undamaged, a plane starting at ~550 mph and 33,000 ft. can go a long way.)
Doesn't the US usually send out their crash team investigators for stuff like this? Even when it happens in other countries. I thought they did for the missing plane and for the Air France crash. I wonder if they are going to do that here (obviously it takes a while to send out people).
I always assumed they were invited to help investigate. Or maybe if it involves a Boeing, they automatically investigate (and likewise, maybe France investigates all Airbus crashes no matter where they occur). Or maybe we're just barging into other countries' affairs, I don't know. Wouldn't be the first time.
IIRC from the flight that went missing, NTSB has authority by treaty to investigate anything involving a Boeing.
Idk. I think it's sort of natural if something crashes near you to maybe check it out. Especially if you live somewhere that officials might not show up to right away. I know in this case there aren't any survivors but I'm sure that's also at play too - checking to see if there are survivors you could help. I don't think people's intentions are necessarily negative; it's probably a mixed bag.
Maybe I've read too many thrillers or World War II novels but you could also have people who aren't loyal to the separatists in the area trying to get some things to keep them from having them and helping the government they are loyal too. Like when planes would crash in France in WWII and the resistance would help them. Or like the people who helped Mark Wahlburg's character in Lone Survivor. Possibly far fetched but not impossible. If you live in an area of unrest typically you are aware of these things.
Sure some people are dicks but others might have good intentions/motivations.

If a jetliner crashed nearby and I thought it might be a while before authorities could get there I would absolutely go over, do my best to evaluate potential hazards to bystanders/myself, and then try to help anyone in need if I could. I agree that there are probably a lot of people who might think that way.
Unfortunately given some of the photos of the destruction my expectation of the chance of survivors would be low.

Interesting update per BBC: A pro-Russia rebel leader in east Ukraine says they are ready to call a ceasefire for several days to facilitate an investigation into the crash, according to reports.

I would hope so.
BBC also has pictures of militants (I don't know if that's the right word for them) now at the crash site guarding it.
I was just mentioning to DH a day or two ago that I just realized I hadn't heard anything about what was going on in Ukraine for awhile. Guess they fixed that.
You think our satellite imagery can determine the launch point of the missle? That could pretty well answer who is responsible I would think
I watch far too many spy movies because I was thinking that surely we can sort all of this out from satellite images.
Then I remembered that we still haven't found the other downed flight and neither Matt Damon nor Chris Pine actually work for the United States government.

I'm guessing we have quite a few more spy satellites watching Ukraine than the middle of the Indian Ocean, so there's that.
