14 and 14W are different sizes. 14W is plus size so it is cut bigger than a 14. 14W is what is in the plus size section. The rule of thumb used to be if you were a 14W then you could wear a normal 16 or vice versa.
I understand but whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? I feel like if it's the same brand it should just continue, so either the plus section starts with the "regular" 14 or it just starts with 16.
Basically, most 14s are too tight and most 14ws are too big on me.
Can I take a moment to bitch about how I had to pay extra for a women's XXL t-shirt recently. And then when it came it was smaller than most mediums. WTF is that?
Disclaimer: I have not read the article. but upon reading the title my internal response was BEACUSE THEY MAKE PLUS SIZE CLOTHING FUCKING HIDEOUS.
This is exactly where I was when I was reading the article.
I don't have any problem wit getting good quality stuff but I don't wear that all the time. I want attractive weekend clothing too that doesn't cost a ton and look like a shapeless tent or like I am coming from a loud pattern party.
I'm in between plus and "regular" sizes. I'm also really, really picky about how things fit me. I may be fat but I try to camouflage this as much as possible.
Because of this, I basically will not shop online. I may find 20 things that fit but only one will flatter.
I'm so fucking sick of having a hard time finding a 14 in stores. A 16 is damn near impossible and that's what I wear in brands that don't vanity size.
Even when they use plus size models, the clothes don't look more accurate. I bought this Calvin Klein dress a few months ago. When I got home & found it online (because I google everything), I was kind of horrified by how fug it looked in the stock photo.

I agree. Just keep counting from 14 to 16 to 18 to 20 to 22. Depending on the store, have no idea is I'm an 18/20, an 18W, a 16W, a 1X, a 2X, etc. WHY are there three different sizing conventions?! Maybe change that and just go to one, then we can address the issue of buying clothing that is more tailored.

Women's sizing in general is awful. I know we have hips and shit, but come on. Why do guys get to buy pants with waist and length and we get neither?
I am both in between regular and petite for length and regular and plus for size. I can find no clothes. Also, why is a 14 plus bigger (like, quite a bit bigger) than a regular 14 even in the same damn brand?
I just remedy all my problems by wearing clothes I used to fit into 25 lbs. ago that are now very ill-fitting but free. I'm probably not the customer they are looking for...
Lands' End sells by waist and length. They run really good sales and shop them through ebay. You can return anything you order to Sears (and Sears carries some LE stuff in the stores).

You probably need either a 16 or a 12W.
In my experience, a 16 does not equal a 14W. I've found that the Ws are a different cut, so if it's bottoms, it will have a different hip to waist ratio and different rise. That's why they don't just keep going straight up. It might be that regular sizing sizes the waist at, say, 80% of the hip and the W sizing sizes the waist at 85% of the hip (I'm picking numbers out of my ass here). So someone with a 36 inch waist might need a 44 inch hip or a 46 inch hip, with the former being regular and the latter being plus.
I buy a lot from ASOS, ON for jeans because I need short people jeans!! But at ON my tshirts have to be L or XL in the regular size, but the smallest plus size is all wrong and big and not right. Whenever I can find petite plus stuff it makes such a difference in how more pulled together and polished I look because the fit is so much better.
Also, I'm fat and curvy. I mean there's a belly, but, there's ass and big boobs and the belly is still smaller than those things. Boxy loose stuff is hideous on me. I need structured clothing. I'm better off wearing a body con dress with a blazer and shaper OR a dress I can belt. All the plus size blazers are cut like fat people can't still have waists.
You need these skirts!! Several of my friends have gotten them, and they're flattering on all of us.
So there is another problem. There's 12w?? I wouldn't know this and in department stores they keep misses and plus on two different floors so I may not even bother to look in pluses.
Yes! I think it's pretty hard to find. I know Talbots carries it, though like most clothing in this size, it's probably going to be mostly online.
The lack of quality plus size clothes is why I learned to garment sew and tailor. I buy clothes in a range of sizes and then tailor them to fit me. Or I sew them from scratch. It's a PITA. It's so frustrating and it's probably why my nice clothes are really only a collection of 9 or 10 pieces that I am crazy meticulous about. Luckily as a SAHM, my need for a nice wardrobe is pretty small. I can get away with stretchy short knit skirts and soft t-shirts.
I have broad shoulders, a round tummy, small waist, full booty, no hips, and muscular legs. Very few garments fit me off the rack. LOL!
I never really had a hard time finding 14s or 16s when I wore that size. Where do you shop? BR was a favorite for dresses, still is. Also, I love Gap Modern Boot work pants. They fit ass and hips and they're really flattering. I think those go up to size 20 online and 16 in store.
Nordstrom Rack also has some great plus size options. Nordstrom does as well. Rack is just a cheaper alternative. I know most of the Womens clothing is fug. I've seen the plus size stores who make everything in cheap jersey and ugly styles. Not everyone wants to be a damn pin up girl with black and cherries all over shit.
Since you posts fabulous pics of yourself, I know that our shapes are very different. I have the hardest time finding 14/16 that fit. But not only do I have an ass and hips, but I have large legs. The legs part is where I have the issue. So it is too big in the waist and the legs/thighs are crazy tight. Your legs were and still are much smaller than mine. Especially when you get these modern cuts/pencil cuts. But I am going to try the brands you rec above. I have never been able to fit plus sized pants. Way too big in the waist and many times tight in the thighs.
I have a smaller waist and enormous thighs. Most of my pants are from Ann Taylor or LOFT. Most of their pants come in three different fit styles, and each store has one line that has a good wider thigh cut. Try them if you have not already. You may have to order online.
This outfit, again IMO, could work on almost any shape if it is that person's style. Switching out shoes or accessories is easy. If you're not as urban/trendy, wear with flats. Chic on the go look:
Same with these looks:
NOT these shoes, but the rest is great for a weekend/brunch/playdate:
I love this print. Pair with blazer for date night or denim jacket for more casual look:
I think the main problem is that a lot of people have a hard time with fashion and styling in general. Across the board in sizing. It is much tougher when you have a less than common feature or figure to dress.
These are great. I have had some good luck with ASOS Curve and they seem to be good quality. I am 5'4 though and their tunics are like dresses on me. They will still be cute with leggings, though.

This is how I am. I hate the skinny jean trend with a passion. When I'm squeezing into size 14-18 (depending on the store), I can't call them skinny jeans; they're sausage casing jeans. So my jeans end up larger in the waist and butt (which are already substantial) just so I can have reasonably comfortable thighs. Lane Bryant jeans are the only ones I've found that don't always do that.

I have a free month trial at Gwynnie Bee right now (clothes rental by mail, sizes 10-32), and I found a FB group of ladies who subscribe to the service. I love seeing real women trying on nice clothes. Everything looks good on the model, but since plus size women carry weight so differently, I can't tell from the model what's going to look good on me. I've seen some outfits that look better on a size 28 woman than they did on the size 14 model, because they were the right shape for her.
-more plus sized clothing available IN THE FUCKING STORE. -longer hem lines! FFS Mod Cloth some of your dresses would be great for work except they are WAY too short. Rage. -the same fashions that smaller women are wearing modified for larger women, no more fucking muumuus, let us show off our curves, not hide them! -fashion forward yet not too trendy clothing for women in their 30s (i.e. no clubwear, short skirts, loud prints).
My best finds are typically at Marshalls/TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Macys. I've had luck at Dress Barn, JCP, Mod Cloth as well and I buy cheap stuff at Target, Kohls, and Old Navy. ETA: Lands End has some not granny stuff, also have had luck with XXL tops from Loft as long as it's a stretchy knit.
I really want to try to step out of my comfort zone this winter and get skinny jeans or tights to wear with boots but I'm scared.

ooh what is the FB group?
I wish they had Stitch Fix for women over size 20.
really I just feel like those of us that are out of the club hopping years are ignored or shoved into the grandma clothing, hard to find the in between.

I'm really sick of all the drapey tops. My boobs are already way smaller than my hips/ass. I need structure to not look like I just got swallowed by fabric.
I've really had the best luck at Talbots recently.
I prefer to spend good money on pants more than anything else. I love love love my WHBM pants. But I agree shopping as a woman a lot of times just sucks.
let me tell you some bullshit about ON - i buy a few pairs of jeans once a year. as in two pair of jeans once a year and wear those fuckers out until the next yearly jean purchase. i am a 16 in jeans at ON. i find the 16 short sweetheart cut jeans that i like in a medium wash that fit decent. i grab the same thing (16 short sweetheart cut) but in a dark wash and that motherfucker fits me entirely different. IT SHOULD BE THE SAME MOTHERFUCKING JEAN. SAME JEAN.
RAGEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This same exact thing - size, style and all happened to me at ON last year. I've had it happen at LB too.
