Hospitals don't give out free pumps. They do maybe deliver to you a pump paid for by your insurance.
I guess where I am at is there is no way I would ever do that for $40. It's not $4000. Give it away and be a decent person if it's NBD. Presumably the person buying it can't get a free one from insurance, so why be a dick and charge them?
My hospital gives out free pumps. Granted, they were single manual pumps. But still free. It came in a little package with a nursing cover, breast milk storage supplies and formula samples (ha!). Everyone got one upon discharge.
That opinion isn't going to change. So I guess I agree to disagree.
Here you go! People have pointed out why it is shitty but "your opinion isn't going to change"
What if everybody lived by your motto "I paid for it why should I give it away instead of sell it" the world would be a pretty shitty place. Thank God for good people.
I don't know, I just don't agree. Yeah, I can track down a family that doesn't own a pair of shoes and give them all of mine, or I can sell them at a yard sale. Because they're mine....
can you imagine if everyone felt this way? Like if everyone cared more about making a buck or two and only caring for themselves rather than help others even if it means losing a couple of bucks? I am so glad we still live in a world where people want to help others. Honestly this quote from YOU pretty much sums up what is wrong with the world.

Sigh.
I'm guessing you donate every single extra penny you have to charity? And every free moment you have is spent volunteering?
Just because I didn't donate a pump and sold my old shoes at a yard sale, doesn't mean I don't contribute my time and monies to charities. I know this is hard for you to understand, but you don't get to decide what, how much, and which charities people participate in.
That is not what you said. I don't believe you at all. You were very specific to say you would rather sell your stuff than give it away. Now that you realize how absolutely horrible that makes you look, you change your tune. Good try.

I wasn't very specific to say that. At all. I said I sold my belongings at a yard sale. Like I said before, I could not care less how horrible I look in your eyes. So believe me when I say I'm not changing anything. Especially not for your benefit. If you're all of a sudden seeing a different tune, that's all you.
Could you imagine what the world would be like if people took snippets of information and ran around half-cocked talking exaggerated nonsense? Thank god for sane people.
Are you implying that you are the sane one here? Lol um okay sell all the stuff.
You didn't change it for me you changed it when everyone basically called you an asshole for your attitude.
I don't think selling things at yard sales or consignment sales is the problem - I think that's pretty normal. I think people are stuck because it sounds like you took a pump you knew you didn't need because "free," and then sold it later.
Sure everyone donates money and items differently, but taking items you don't need b/c your insurance is covering it and then selling it is yucky.

This and the whole "why would I give shoes to people that need them instead of selling the for $5 at a garage sale". It's just the whole attitude of I would rather make a buck than help people out.

Selling stuff makes a person insane? That's a totally rational statement.
Amy- I don't get what you're stuck on. The same can be said about selling anything for a menial amount. Baby clothes, toys etc can all be donated. Or thrown away. Or sold at a yard sale. Knowing that it's fraud to sell things insurance paid for, I wouldn't do it again. With the Info I had at the time? No, I don't feel bad selling it. You guys are making it sound like a saw a starving person on the street, waved a burger in his face, and said "gonna have to give me a dollar first".
But is there really a difference? I mean it's pretty obvious that you got something for free you didn't need most people can't afford so instead of passing that on you sold it.
No selling things doesn't make you crazy. It's the justifications you are using that are off.
This would be were the intense rep comes from ::sigh:: Look, selling the pump for $40 was shitty IMO. If I got it free and didn't need it I would give it away. My choice. You made a different choice and others think it was a shitty choice. Whatever.
With all that said, she did say she took it thinking she might use it. And that's fine. It's just what she did after she didn't use it.
And nothing is free at a hospital. Nothing. A fucking aspirin is like $20. They aren't giving out pumps. Not nice doubles at least. After my $50,000 delivery with DD I'm not inclined to pay extra for stuff just because it's going on insurance.
And I don't buy that anyone with half a brain cell doesn't know that.
idk, technically you are paying for it with your insurance anyway.
Selling it, I don't like but it's a gray area. Donating it, I am ok with. I had a coworker get hers even though she got one through her baby shower and gave it to her SIL.
And we wonder why insurance plans suck
And why quality insurance costs an arm and a leg, and possibly one's first-born child.
Eh. $40 may not be much to you, but it may be a lot to another family. If someone wants to sell their own belongings on craigslist or a yard sale, fine, go ahead.
But deliberately getting something free (through insurance or messing with Amazon's return policy or whatever) is shady in the very least.

I get what you're saying. But $40 shouldn't be a lot for anyone on this board who doesn't have paying job. If it is, you have no business staying at home.
Well I figured someone would eventually come out and say it, I just didn't expect it to be you.
And who said anything about needing $40 to pay a bill?
I was just responding because MrsMuq was saying maybe the $40 isn't a lot to amy (I think) but it might be to RF. If money is "a lot" to a family, I assume it's needed for something important. And I stand by the idea that if $40 is a lot of money to your family, then all able bodied adults need to be bringing in a paycheck. I mean I know families where both parents work and their monthly budgets are still coming down to $5 and they hope to break even. But there's no excuse to be cutting it so close that you need to sell something to make an extra $40 when both adults aren't working IMO.
I mean, I'm not as structured about money as a lot of people here. I'm not one of those people who freaks out when someone says they want ot have a baby and they don't have 6 months worth of expenses saved up in cash in addition to a giant savings cushion. But if you can't afford to randomly decide to pick up a pizza one night unless you sell something, you need a job.
I was really just trying to say that MrsMuq's argument might be true in the general world, but it's really not for this particular board or to justify RF selling the pump.
I just want to clarify that I don't agree with RF getting a pump she wasn't going to use from her insurance just for the sake of selling it later. But, I can see $40 being a lot to a family, even one here (on this board), especially one in a LCOL area.
FTR I don't even have a particularly strong opinion about her selling the pump. I would have donated it because I would have felt skeezy selling it. I just don't get the idea that she sold it over donating because that $40 was so important to her family. Seems like she just saw an opportunity to make money and would prefer that over donating? I think it's shitty but I don't think this was a "sell the pump or don't have dinner tonight" situation. I could be wrong.
Is it shitty because it's a pump she got from her insurance, or is the general (and I mean the board's collective opinion) opinion that selling stuff over donating it is shitty?

It seemed to me there was a lot of anger over her selling something rather than donating bc plenty of moms can't afford pumps.

I got that from your op. I don't think the intent was there "zomg let me get this free pump and then sell it!"
AG will continue to pick on you bc she doesn't like you. The end.

Okay, I must be a bit dense today. I can see why selling the pump over donating it would be shady/crappy/whatever.
But is the general consensus that having yard sales or selling stuff on craigslist, like old clothes, baby gear, tools, whatever, as opposed to donating said stuff, considered shitty?

Well that better not be the general consensus. Based on that logic by some people if you can't afford to donate to charity then you better get out there and get a job! I sell, consign, Craigslist, ebay whatever. I make decent money sometimes too. But I also donate to shelters, pass loads of baby stuff on to friends, and give fiancially. The two practices are not mutually exclusive.
I think pumps are different because they're hella expensive and a lot of moms cannot afford them and don't have access to them.
Honestly I side eye most people who sell their pumps on my mom swap group. It just seems off to me.
Pumps are in that category of things you're not supposed to sell or share, mostly for hygenic/safety purposes. Same line of thinking as re-selling car seats, I believe.

Depends on the pump. You can just replace the tubing and whatnot and it can be perfectly fine.
