I had these braids in for 3 weeks and couldn't take it any more. They were pretty but just heavy and itchy. I think I'm a little allergic to marley hair. Its itchy on my skin and sometimes makes me break out. I really tried to keep them for a month. They were too costly and took 3.5 hours:(

That happened to me once. The next time I rinsed the hair in vinegar to soften it. I think there are some sites around that can show you how to do it.
This.
Apparently, it's a common issue. I honestly, think that was the beginning of the downfall to my hair. I had a set of braids that was itchy, and then when I took them out, didn't have a regular stylist to work with me, to get my hair back right (there weren't any where I lived at the time)

Oooh I never heard of that! Maybe I don't need to swear off individual braids. I think I will wait until at least the summer to try them again. I will maybe try some updos in the meantime.
Oh man, don't be mortified! I thought it was hilarious and knew it wasn't actually you. Gbcn is weird, but not so weird that we be posting full frontals in a natural hair thread lol
Those were cute, busybodyk! Sorry you couldn't keep them.
busybodyk those braids were so cute. I have super sensitive skin and it was my fear that this hair would cause irritation. So far so good but it's only day 2. I'm sorry it didn't workout for you.
I feel like I stumbled on a decent undo. I twisted my hair in larger than normal pieces and have more volume in front than normal. I'm almost assured I will never be able to replicate this.
So I think I might try to get some braids in the next week. I found a picture of some I like, so I'm kind of ready. I have some questions that I feel more comfortable asking here than calling the braid shop.
Do I need to get hair and take it with me or will they have hair?
Should I go to my normal stylist and get my hair washed and blown out first or is it just as effective if I wash it at home and let it air dry in a few braids (my stylist charges $65 to do this for her weave people, so if I can bypass it I'd like to)?
@tooshort, why didn't you post pictures? I need to get on my computer, then I will post a picture of the ones I like.
If they say bring my own hair, will be obvious at the beauty salon what kind I need? I won't have time to order anything online.
Do you have a hair store nearby? A Sally's (I think that's national) or something similar. I usually go into the store waving a picture of what I want and they point me in the right direction . You can ask the braiding salon if they have a recommendation of where to get hair.
I don't know how to post pics (lame party of 1).
Ah okay. Yes, I have a Sally's not too far. I'll ask them when I call, though.
Oh gosh, you're the worst lol.
I like these:
So, part of why I like these is because of how they look at the root. When I was looking for pics, I kept seeing a bunch that look like knots at the root and I don't like that look. Like these (all of which I liked except for the root):
(these weren't too bad)
Do you ever put yours in a bun? That is how I would like to wear it, but so far two of my friends have said they don't think getting all the hair is a bun is going to be as easy as I think it is and once I thought of the logistics, I had to agree. I'm already not good at doing hair stuff, then it's not like I have a ponytail holder that big. I was planning to Youtube, but since I have you here and am already bothering you, any thoughts lol?
I'm at the braiding salon. I asked so many questions that they think I'm a weirdo . However, I feel sufficiently informed about the process so I am pleased lol.
Also, I think I may have just observed some drama. A woman got half her hair braided and said she would be right back. The boss said okay, but then the braider was mad because she thinks she should have paid half. After the woman left, she started telling them how the woman could just go somewhere and get the other half braided for half the price. I agreed, not that my vote counted. I will update if she returns.
No braids have been started. There is an odd (I think) amount of conversation about how my hair should be parted.

Did you have to buy your own hair? Did you soak it in vinegar if your scalp is prone to itchies? I want to see a picture when you are done!
No they had hair. Braids have started. I am close to tears. Too tender headed for this.
I'm jealous of the braids. Braids never look right on me. The last time I got them my sister was all - Skwcm, you shouldn't do this again. It's not a good look for you.

Poor thing! Do you have any Advil? I used to pop two before getting it done
No . That was my plan but I really only came by today to ask all my questions. Then they were saying, we can do it today and I said, eh, I'll come Sunday, no time today, but really I had nothing to do, so here I am. She told me less than 4 hours, but I think I'm already about 50% or more though. There have been as many as 3 braiders on me at once. When that happens, all I can do is hold my eyes, but right now, there's only one, so I can type.
I find that hard to believe skwcm80. You look pretty in all your styles!
sfy thank you! I must be getting the wrong kinds of braids because I had to agree. Between being tender headed and lacking patience I don't see me having them done anytime soon.
I can't wait to hear how yours turn out. I bet they're gorgeous.
So, I've asked many questions of many people. No one told me that they were going to cut stray hair from the braids. I stopped them because I didn't understand how they could be sure they weren't cutting my real hair. I was assured they won't and then I again felt like the crazy lady who asks all the questions again. Well l, two minutes later, I notice how many blond hairs are on my cape, a clear indicator that some of the hair cut must be mine. So they stopped. Now, I'm just waiting on the hot water, something else no one told me about lol. Anyway, it was very painful, but very fast. Will take a faceless picture soon.

Aw, poor thing. Yeah, then hot water sets them. It'll be over soon.

Thanks. This was proof positive that I am such a baby. Of everyone else getting braided, only the 5-6 year old and I were having a tough time . Also, I consider that kid being there borderline child head abuse and this is coming from someone whose grandmother beat her with a comb or brush for squirming during hairdos, so I know it when I see it lol. I think it's fine. I don't see how they got this from the picture I showed them lol, but maybe when it doesn't hurt so much, I can bun it and see more of a resemblance *-). I really just need it to last through the end of the month, but during some of that time, I'll be swimming.
PDQ, I can't use my old method of deletion via tinypic, so I will be doing it manually.
