I'm sorry. That sounds stressful.
I quit a miserable dead end job with no notice, and I highly recommend it. Just be sure to send your "I quit...it was nice working with you" e-mail to anyone you care about right before you leave for the last time to make it clear on whose terms you left. Despite what people on these boards always say, burning that bridge up in a fiery explosion has never come back to haunt me.
If nothing else, I hope the thought of skipping out with your middle finger waving high in the air and never going back will help you get through this crappy situation.
I would start gathering documents to show "retaliation" It seems a little too convenient that you complain about not getting paid and they suddenly say your "work product isn't up to snuff"
Can you remind me where you live? I work in house and I think my company is based in your state. I'd love to keep an eye out for jobs for you. Like others, I hate them for you and cringe whenever you post about your crappy job situation.
I am trying to understand how in the world it is inappropriate to ask for your paycheck when it is due. These people are crazy.
And the thing is, it isn't like you can just turn in a brief or a motion several days after it is due. I'm sure they would have a shitfit. So why is it ok for them to stiff you? Good luck on the job search!

This is good advice. Document while you can. Best of luck, sorry you have to deal with this!
They suck! I'm sorry Bridey. Hopefully someday soon when you're in a new job you can look back and laugh at what poor business-conducting asshats they are. xoxo

Milwaukee. But I'm searching anywhere in the five-county region. I'll even go to Madison for the right job.

That's what I thought. I'll keep an eye out for you. I'm really sorry about your situation, you definitely don't deserve to put up with this crap.
Have you tried checking companies that do contract work not requiring a law degree? I work in clinical research and know we hire a lot of folks to do things like that. If you want a job in Kansas City or Durham I could hook you up, but just a though of places to look. Maybe at local hospitals too?

Agreed - I call bullshit. What a bunch of douchebags.
