We're talking about voting for someone who's not your ideal candidate. Of your presidential votes, how many times were you excited, and how many times were you holding your nose? Just curious.
I was excited to vote 3 times (2000, 2004, 2012) and held my nose twice (1996, 2008).

2004: Held my nose (Kerry / Edwards)
2008: Beside myself with excitement to vote for Obama. Had an election night party and everything. ETA: this was Prop 8 year in California and I was appalled to see so many of my neighbors with shitty signs in their yards about protecting families and all that other fearmongering crap.
2012: Fine with voting for Obama
2016: Will be excited to vote for Bernie or Hillary. I like to think I'm not a straight ticket voter, but reproductive and social issues are at the top of my priority list. Climate change too.

Excited in 1996 b/c I was 18 and wanted to vote - lukewarm for Clinton, but anti Ross Perot, so I was glad he didn't get a push as a 3rd party. After that election, I thought we'd have a viable 3rd party in a decade or so.
2000 - Voted for Gore and was passionate and felt ripped off 2004 - Not excited 2008 - Super excited for Hillary, then heard and learned more about Obama and jumped on that (local) campaign, was disappointed in his running partner (Biden) 2012 - Less excited, but passionate for Obama again
2004: Excited for Bush 2008: Meh to McCain, I really liked Fred Thompson. 2012: I actually grew to like Mittens. I wish he were running in 2016. 2016: I'm writing in my dream candidate, Richard Riordan.
Any relationship to Rick Riordan the author of the Percy Jackson (and many other) series?

2004 was my first year to vote in a presidential election, and I was SUPER pumped to vote for Howard Dean! (Shuddup, I was a kid! He came to my college and talked to us like we were adults!) I was not super excited to vote for Kerry, but I did.
2008-I voted for Hillary in the Primaries, but was excited for Obama for the general election.
2012-less excited, but he's turned out a lot better when he isn't worried about reelection! I would have been excited if I had known I would get "give no fucks" Obama.
2016-I am excited to vote for Hillary again. Ya know, the smooth criminal.
I actually was kind of excited about Kerry. I don't remember loving him, but I have this recollection of being so excited to go to the polls. It may have just been excitement about the possibility of dumping Bush. I can't really remember.
The election I was the least excited about was the CA governor's race in 2010. But Jerry Brown won me over, and I happily voted for him in 2014.
2008: Very excited to vote for Obama. I should add, that I voted for HRC in the primaries, but liked Obama once I learned more about him. 2012: A little disappointed that he seemed to not be getting a whole lot accomplished, but that turned around and now I'm very happy with him in his second term.
I've held my nose in a couple of local elections, but overall I've been excited with all of my national choices- mostly because I have no problem voting 3rd party if there is a candidate there whose platform more aligns with my priorities.

I live in Oklahoma. I don't even want to TALK about the things I have had to do in local elections. And yet, Mary Fallin is STILL our Governor.
1980 Carter - excited 1984 Mondale - not excited 1988 Dukakis - not excited 1992 Clinton - excited 1996 Clinton -I don't actually remember... 2000 Gore - not excited 2004 Kerry - not excited 2008 very excited to vote for Clinton in the primaries; but just as excited to vote for Obama in the general 2008 Obama - happy enough
** Side note I saw Carter at a book signing a few years ago. We were being herded through like sheep, and not many people were able to speak to him. I managed to make eye contact and spit out, "You were the first president I ever voted for!", and he looked straight at me and replied, "Thank you for that!" So cool! (And we share a birthday). (heart)
However, I am totally fine with voting third party, and I have, twice, in order to vote for a more ideal candidate for myself (2000 and 2012).
Local and state elections are usually okay for me, since I've spent the majority of my life in blue states. Well, there was one senatorial election in NY where I wanted to make a statement and voted third party because I was so not enthusiastic about either candidate. Ironically, I may just vote for one of the people who ran in that election yet...
1996 - I GET TO VOTE WHEE! Who's the Dem candidate? I'll vote for him. 2000 - WOO GORE! WTF is a hanging chad?! 2004 - Um, Kerry I guess. 2008 - WOO OBAMA! 2012 - Step it up Obama!
2004: excited for Bush (I was a different person then lol) 2008: excited for Obama (but wished it had been Hillary) 2012: excited for Gary Johnson lol 2016:
2000 and 2004: excited for Bush 2008: indifferent to McCain, did not like Palin 2012: voted for VP Ryan, love him; supported Huntsman in the primary 2016: not happy with anyone. I really don't like Hilary at all but would consider voting for the first female president depending on who the third party candidates are

Out of 6 Presidential elections, I've only been "excited" to vote once. Many, I've felt I needed to vote against someone, not for someone.
Local elections I've had many more "excited"s and "highly motivated"s. But sad to admit, I didn't vote in the last local election. None of the candidates will represent us when we move to the new house and most were running unopposed. The only race I actually liked a candidate in...the candidate only got ~5% of the vote (and I expected that from this area).

I didn't mind huntsman if I recall. I feel like he was a moderate R?
It's too bad you don't have a candidate that excites you. And even as a lib, I mean that. That would frustrate me.

I've been thinking back to the presidential elections I've voted in (all since 2000), and I think in general I've been excited each time, if only because I like voting.
I liked Gore fine, and it was my first time voting so I was definitely excited in 2000. I wasn't wild about Kerry in '04, but I was hopeful that we would get rid of Bush. 2008 and 2012 I was excited, though I had voted for Clinton in the primaries in '08. I had a lot of bitterness about the way the press treated her and I had specifically become a Dem to vote for her (I had been an independent before that and they can't vote in primaries here). Once I got over that, I was all in for Obama.

1996: Excited to vote! Get to vote Clinton out of office! Wore black to church the next day because we lost. Who was the R candidate? Oh right, Dole. 2000: Absentee ballot while at college....eenie, meanie, minee, mow. Bush. Stayed up all night to watch the returns, finally fell asleep with the TV still going. Decided at 3a the night before the election that we should definitely go! Drove 8 hours and made it for the parade, posed with protesters. 2004: Super excited to kick Bush out....so I voted for Kerry. 2008: OBAMA! OBAMA! OBAMA! 2012: Obama. -- 2016: Excited to vote for first woman candidate. She's great...flawed, not crazy.
