I have a question for anyone who wants to answer it.
What's the best documentary you watched on Netflix? I'm looking for something to take up the two hours before I may or may not leave for a junior high game. I've already watched Making of a Murderer.
I want to know about people no longer here. Like was there ever fallout/resolution with SBP and the earring in the sheets?
1. She is still here. 2. There was resolution. 3. It's not your business to know nor to ask.
This is yet another situation on which I have no idea about the backstory (although it sounds ominous); however, this is pretty much the point of the thread. I was surprised how well, relatively speaking, the one on MMM went. Usually these things are a complete fucking cluster, so...
Open to anyone: Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink and find out who is right and who is dead.

I'm not sure if this is a documentary, but Beasts of No Nation was excellent.

Yeah I got nothing.
Sorry but I've built up a tolerance to Iocaine powder.

I disagree that the point of the thread is to ask about a possible terrible marital incident from 6 years ago. I draw my line at really, really intimate questions, I guess.

I saw Beasts of No Nation (liked it) but not Half the Sky. Thanks. Right now, though, I have on the Tamir Rice breaking news, which is on all our local channels. I live south of Cleveland.
Anyone want to know anything about movies and awards buzz? I bet not, but you never know. I am so disappointed that Going Clear didn't come in to the library today. It's a Scientology doc that I REALLY want to watch. I missed my chance to see Mad Max and now I am regretting it because it's getting some major play.

What Happened Miss Simone?
Yes, I started that one but for some reason stopping watching early on. I probably had an errand to run or something.

Listen, it's so far past my line, I can't even tell you. If someone asks me what size shoe I wear in a thread like this, it's liable to end in me cursing, but I think I make it pretty clear that I am not an open book. Some people are *shrug*. Like I said, I don't know the backstory, but it is called ask anyone anything and people are bound to ask inappropriate, rude and nosy as fuck questions. Would I answer this? Absolutely not, but when a thread like this is made, it's bound to get messy--hence the first few posts.

I have Thin Blue Line from like 1989 on my watch list, but haven't watched it yet. It's about a police murder a decade before and a police hunt and lies that put the wrong guy in jail and revealing the issues around it.
Ok......How many people fell for the FB Zuckerberg hoax?
This mess has had me scratching my head for days. I keep seeing all these rants and memes about how Zuck is NOT GIVING YOU PEOPLE MONEY!!!ELEVEN!! and I'm sitting over here like WTF is going on? I apparently don't have anyone in my feed that was gullible enough to fall for it because I had no idea it was such a thing that required so many posts about it being a hoax.

I saw one person on my thread only - I was all, "Um, you got taken, dude. How embarrassing!"
I had quite a few people on my thread putting it up. I'm like if you believe that, that I have a nice plot of land in the middle of the Hudson to sell you.

The question is, "If we were to see one movie that will be a contender for best picture, what would you recommend?"
First, here are the movies that are likely to be nominated for Best Picture. (The Academy can fill 10 slots but are likely to have only 8 or 9.)
top tier: Mad Max, The Martian, Carol, Spotlight, The Revenant middle tier: Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Inside Out, Room possible: Trumbo, Brooklyn, Hateful Eight
Of those, I have seen The Martian, the beginning of Mad Max, Spotlight, Bridge of Spies. I'd recommend The Martian and Spotlight because they'd appeal to the greatest possible number of people.
Spotlight has a great ensemble cast working seamlessly together, esp. Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, and Mark Ruffalo. The story is also important---the way the Boston Globe found out information about pedophilia among Catholic priests in Boston.
Spotlight should get in the neighborhood of 4-6 nominations.

If we were to see one movie that will be a contender for best picture, what would you recommend? I would like to see at least one that is good and will likely get more nominations than just best picture.
For example, last year we saw Birdman, and the year before Dallas Buyers Club. (I cant remember if we saw DBC before or after the Oscars though TBH.)

Oscar nominations for Spotlight will probably be picture, director, screenplay, and maybe score, editing, and one or two actors, though the fact that they work as an ensemble in which no one stands out works against it. I could see Ruffalo and McAdams getting in.
Oscar noms for The Martian will be picture, director, maybe actor, screenplay, and 2-4 below-the-line tech nominations.
I've read Carol and Mad Max will lead nominations.
I loved Bridge of Spies, but I'm more of a history buff. I don't know if it would be a crowd-pleaser.
Creed is a fantastic movie that's not in the mix for Oscars. I liked "Steve Jobs," but it bombed at the box office. Actually, that's a lie. It's getting less awards buzz for not making much but has actually made more than Room, Carol, Danish Girl.
I want to know about people no longer here. Like was there ever fallout/resolution with SBP and the earring in the sheets?
Thank you for perfectly showing why these threads can be so incrediably inappropriate.
You don't get to invade someone's personal life just because someone else made a title "ask anyone anything." You don't get to do this anywhere actually.
My MIL makes mole. My H does not. My MIL doesn't share recipes. On the rare ocassion that she will she share a recipe, she will purposefully leave out an ingredient.

I thought The Martian was....meh. Maybe its because I can't stand Matt Damon's stupid face after his nonsense on Project Greenlight or that the story was just boring and I had just seen Matt Damon in Interstellar (which is far superior to The martian).

I am in SAG and will watch a bunch of these over the next few weeks. I love Spotlight it reminded me so much of my print newsroom days and I hope it wins all the awards but I will be voting for Idris in any category where he is nominated. LOL
I'm jealous that you will get to see a bunch of films to which I do not have access. Brooklyn, Carol, Danish Girl, and Room have not shown around here. We get movies for only a short amount of time unless they are blockbusters. If we hadn't seen Birdman and Theory of Everything the week we did, we would not have been able to.
Supporting Actor is very, very, very stacked this year. There are around 10 contenders. Idris Elba is probably going to get in, but it's not a sure thing. I could see Mark Rylance winning; Stallone, Dano, Shannon, Tremblay (category fraud!), Ruffalo, Keaton, and Bale are also in the mix. Personally, based on movies I've seen, I'd have to rank them Stallone, Rylance, Dano, Ruffalo, Keaton, with Elba 6.
