I read last week that a Birkin is a better investment than gold, which killed me a little inside.
Yes! And stocks!
It's never fluctuated in value and has increased it's value by like 15% every year.
Exactly. I wonder if I can convince H that we should buy one for retirement. "401k? No, we put our money into handbags. Well, not literally. We spent all of it ON the handbag, so we have nothing to put inside of it."
According to the episode the "trick" seems to be going into the store, buying some other things, then casually ask if they happen to have one in stock.
In case you care.
If you found the podcast interesting this book was a fun read.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

TBF, this is what happens every time I buy a designer bag.
My husband asked why I strap my purse into the cart at Target, when someone could just reach right into its open top and steal my wallet. And my response is always, "There's no money IN the bag, the money IS the bag. Sir."
You can easily get an orange or other brightly colored Birkin bag but if you want a black one, good luck. While living in Zurich I heard many stories about the quest for a Birkin and these people had serious cash but the wait list is so flipping long b/c they are all hand made by a small group of men.
I had one friend who was in Hermes to buy something other things (clothing) and asked if by chance any black birkins were available and there was 1 that a lady had not picked up that had been pre-ordered. My friend was able to buy it on the spot b/c she was a high paying customer for other Hermes items And this was on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. So not sure if pre-ordering even means anything with being on a wait list unless your name is well known.

This makes me lol because going into Hermes and just buying a few things is still going to run in the thousands pretty quickly, unless those few things are colouring books
On this note, I have a Hermes belt that I brought into the store to be repaired a few weeks ago, and I'd had an alteration made to it previously by a non Hermes craftsman, and I got a right telling off and they wouldn't fix it.

I don't understand. Why do you need a "trick" to purchase a bag? Do they refuse to sell it to you if you just walk in and ask to buy one???

I can think of a handful of friends that have one. They all have SAs at each of the higher end boutiques they frequent, respectively, so they keep them in the know.

For the record, I don't have any close friends that are rich enough that they took a Sharpie (or had it hired out) to theirs! That's whole other level.
ETA: Actually, wait, they probably are that rich, just have the sense not to! LOL!
