I bought two outfits (pants, onesie, sweater), and two sleeper and hats. Baby came out at 8lbs 3oz and actually was able to wear Carters NB for about 3.5 weeks. Some of the 0-3 month stuff runs small and we could use it immediately without it looking goofy.
I then received about 5 more NB sleepers and a couple more outfits as hand me downs immediately after birth. They came in handy. We were team green so my cousin didn't send anything over until she knew we had a girl.

My boys were 6lbs 11 oz and 7lbs 7oz and wore them for the first 5 or 6 weeks. The 0-3 stuff was swimming on them and I liked having some outfits that were a bit more snug. I didn't have to buy any of them, they were given to me as gifts.
I wouldn't. I got several nb outfits at my shower and he wore them for like a week or two. Actually, the only clothes I've bought him have been his going home outfit and Easter outfit. I got so many clothes as gifts.

i bought a few newborn items, they were all sleepers. she was born at 8 pounds 5 oz and they fit her just fine. she wore them for at least two weeks.. probably longer. keep the tags, most places will let you return if you don't use especially target.. i think their return policy is like 3 months.

I needed NB clothing. Both my girls were born at 40 weeks and both wore nb clothing for ~12 weeks. (They were small; neither weighed over 7 lbs at birth.)
I had bigger babies (9 1/2 and 9) and both wore newborn clothes for several weeks, I think C was in them close to 6 weeks. But, I also didn't like them swimming or in loose clothing, so there is that too.
I would buy at least three sleeper or two piece outfits and see how it goes. You might be surprised.

It's really hit or miss, but I'd have some. My older DD was in NB for 2 months (born 7 lbs 5 oz, slow grower) and my youngest was out in 2 weeks (also born 7 lbs 5 oz, super fast grower).
I would have a few things. Ask friends for hand-me-downs. They're usually in great shape because lots of babies never wear them.
Neither of my kids wore them. BUT I am glad I had them. If they had been early or been smaller, I would have wanted clothes that fit...and the last thing I want to do after having a baby early is get to the store and buy newborn stuff (or even have to think about asking someone else to buy them for us).

I would get a few sleepers just in case. DS was measuring pretty big so I bought nothing in newborn size, and then he was born 4 weeks early and we were scrambling to figure out what to bring him home in.
I would buy at least a couple NB sleepers and onesies. Just cheap/on sale ones, so you don't feel bad if he's too big for them at birth. If he's small, you can always send someone out to get more. But it was nice to have a couple things to bring to the hospital.
I couldn't cram Declan into NB size. He went straight to 0-3. (He was 8lb 13oz.)
Asher on the other hand wore NB for 8 weeks. So I got tons of use out of them, and had to buy more. (He was 6lb 15oz.)

Both of my babies wore NB for a few weeks. My first baby was 7lbs 7 oz, 21" long. My second was 7 lbs 8oz, 20.75" long. I'd get a few NB sleepers just in case.
I would get a few. DS was 8.5lbs and he wore the nb sizes for a couple of weeks. He was swimming in the 0-3 clothes. I just bought the footed onesies from Carter's. Cheap and easy.

I only had a few thinking she'd grow out of them in a week or two, but she ended up using them for 3+ months. When we got home from the hospital I had my mom go to a consignment shop to grab a bunch of nb clothes. Dd was 7.4 at birth and stayed in the average percentile range for both height and weight.

I definitely would. 0-3 "fit" but they were swimming in them even though they were gigantic babies. I liked having things that truly fit appropriately. They were 10 lb 7 oz, 9 lb 11 oz, and 12 lb 3 oz, for the record.
Example: DS3 is 2 weeks old in this pic, born at 12 lb 3 oz, and this is a carter's newborn sleeper. A 0-3 would be long and swimming, in the footie area especially.
