My son was born at more than 8 lbs and had weight gain/BF/latch issues so he was in newborn clothes for a while. I would definitely buy a few things in newborn size. There's usually a ton of it on clearance so you don't have to spend a lot.

Yes, we needed NB sizes for over around 6 weeks for our kids. I bought sleepers and onesies at my local Once Upon a Child. I spent less than $20 and got plenty of items.
I would wait to buy until after your shower if possible. We did not register for any clothes, but a lot of people added outfits to their presents.

I'll have a few outfits this time for sure. With J, she was 8 lbs, 1.5oz... And she looks so ridiculous in the 0-3 stuff. It's just too big. Even if #2 wears NB for just a couple weeks, it would be worth it to me this time.
Thanks for confirming what I was thinking! I'll definitely wait until after the shower to get anything, but I'll make sure I have at least a few things in NB, and I'll stick to Carters.
We used NB for a few weeks. As it happens, she mainly grew out of them as early as she did because we started cloth diapering, and that adds a lot of chunk in the butt.
I'd have a few sleepers around, both of mine were in the 7-7.5 lb range and they wore NB for at least a month or so, 0-3 looked ridiculous on them. Definitely agree that the Gerber stuff runs super small.

My son was 7lbs 8oz and in NB for 6 weeks. DD was 6lbs 7oz and in NB for 8 weeks. They were both back to birth weight by two weeks old and gained well, but the 0-3 stuff was huge.
Can't hurt to have a few sleepers and an outfit or two.
My babies were full term, but small (6 lbs). They mostly wore those sleep sacks, which don't need to fit like sleepers or else just shirts and diapers. My inlaws bought a couple of preemie sleepers that fit for a few weeks, though. We could have gotten by without them.
One of mine wore newborn for about 6 weeks. The other never fit in newborn. It just depends on your kid. I'd buy a few things and then adjust as necessary. You don't need to buy everything before the baby is born .
Just don't buy too much of any give size. It's not just about birth size, my babies grew ridiculously fast. Alex outgrew his infant carseat at 3 months, so you can imagine he was in 9-12 months at that point.

My daughter wore nb for a few weeks. She came home in a 0-3 month outfit and was swimming in it. She was full term and 7lb 9oz. And I had GD and they acted like she could be a giant although her measurements were always at 50%. There is no way to know. I stocked up on (used) onesies and sleepers for this baby in nb.
You're having a summer baby, right? My early summer DD (7lb 6 oz) lived in Carters NB side-snap t-shirts with a blanket wrapped around her legs for the first month--which was perfect for dealing with the umbilical cord and billion diaper changes.
My baby was supposed to be 8+lbs. I wasn't planning on any newborn clothes. I went to a consignment sale and picked up 4 onsies and 2 pants for $4 "just in case". Good thing I did. She was born 7-6 and left the hospital at 6-11. She wore that stuff for the first 4 weeks. She's actually in the pants today and she's 12lbs. :-)
I would. At least one thing washed and ready for taking baby home. None of my kids fit in 3 mo right away. Then maybe have a few sleepers stashed to wash and ready if you need them.

Exactly this. Henry was born on his due date at 6 pounds, 9 oz but was 6 pounds, 4 oz the day we brought him home. My mom had to run out and get preemie stuff. He was in newborn about two weeks later. (He did fit newborn cloth diapers right away.)
I also fucking loved sleepsacks. I know not everyone does, but I'd get at least one or two. Between that and the tiny little kimono shirts and some sleep and plays, he was set.
