Both my kids wore newborn sizes and my son was 8lb3oz. Circo brand from target runs really big so you could buy that brand so if baby is on the big size it should fit

I'd have a couple of things and a thing or two of diapers in newborn. My kid was born at a chunky 9# 8oz but still lost a bunch of weight and was 8#11 at her first checkup. She did newborn for a hot minute, but still needed them then. Plus the outfits are so adorably tiny :-)
My kids were both long, so the newborn stuff fit for about one week. I would get something really nice for hospital pics, but get the rest in 3 months. Both my girls only wore sleepers and onesies the first three months anyway, and I didn't care if they were swimming in them a little at first.

Yes. I didn't have any and decided last minute to get some and was glad I did. My son was 8 lbs. at birth and wore them for quite a while. He was drowning in the 0-3.
My kids were 8lbs and 8lb 6 and they both wore newborn clothes for about a month. The 0-3 were super huge on them and quite ridiculous looking so I was glad I had some NB stuff. In fact we barely had anything but we went out and bought a few more NB sleepers after getting back from the hospital.

DD was in newborn for about a month but she was 6'12 at birth. Depending on expected size it may be worth it to pick up a pack of newborn sleepers just in case.
I'd have one or two things on hand just in case. DD #2 was 19.5" and 6 lbs. 8 oz., so not huge but not teeny either, and all of the 0-3 month stuff we had was so big on her that buckling the carrier straps properly was a PITA. The day after we came home from the hospital I had to run to BRU to buy a preemie sleeper just so I could take her to the peds office for a checkup the next morning without wrestling around all of the extra fabric!
