What are your must-haves? We are aspiring campers. We have: A 10 person tent Two queen airmattresses/pillows Pack n play for MB 4 lanterns Camp stove Sleeping bags A cooler Roasting sticks Collapsible chairs
I can't wait! We're going to Kettle Moraine in WI.
tarps to put under the tent to keep moisture away ropes - we like to put a tarp over our tent as well folding table if there aren't any in the campsite headlamps are good for dark so you don't have to carry a lantern
-Kelty tent footprint -Kelty rain tarp -extra rope and stakes -if you drink coffee, this is a must have, a coffee press -outdoor cooking and dining sets (ours was on sale when we got it) -various sizes of DryLite towels -titanium sporks -spider compact stove (these things are awesome) -this lantern is awesome. You can use it as extra back up for usb charging and you can re-charge by hand cranking (although that takes forever) -a tent table similar to this : www.rei.com/product/895599/rei-camp-pack-n-prep-tote-table
We have some dishwashing tubs and a large pot that we put on the fire to get the water hot - you don't really need to get the water hot, though. We also have mesh bags to hang dishes to dry. We have a kitchen tub in general that we keep camping dishes, soap, sponges, basic spices, coffee, bottle opener, etc. This we built up over time.
I second getting ropes - they are great to have to tie onto trees to dry dishes, towels if you're swimming, clothes, etc.
Will you have electricity? Taking a real coffee maker has been a game changer for me. I bought the cheapest one possible (like $10), and it stays with our camping stuff. Disregard if you are French press people, of course.
Nah, no campfire, s'mores, or hiking at home. We like the tent and looking at the stars. I just like having a decent cup of coffee when I wake up in the morning.

We camp but we certainly don't rough it. We have a trailer.
A table cloth - I like the thicker ones that have the fleecy backs. They seem to stand up better. They are perfect for covering the picnic tables that are provided. The clips like this to hold them in place are a must. A folding table is nice to have. We use the picnic table for eating and folding table for prep or things we keep outside the trailer - a tub of wipes, sunscreen, bug spray, etc. Glow sticks/necklaces - the kids think they are cool to wear and its easier to see them once its dark We don't have a pie iron yet but I want to get one.
We also keep our trailer fully stocked with pots/pans, cutlery and kitchen utensils, lots of foil and plastic baggies, towels and blankets.
Another cooler, so that you can keep beverages in one, and your food in the other. That way when you or your kids are getting in the drink cooler a million times a day, and it inevitably gets left open, the stuff that actually needs to stay cold stays cold.
Dry goods box with all your plates, cutlery, cups, paper towels, wet wipes, etc. Don't forget a cutting board, and table cloth (with table clips or weights).
Dry goods food box for crackers, marshmallows, cereal, etc.
Card and/or board games to play at night.
Bug spray with DEET.
First aid kit with anti-itch meds, more wet wipes, bandaids, pain killers, ointments, etc...
A way to inflate your air mattresses (I use a battery operated pump).
Extra batteries for your pump and lanterns.
Extra bottle of propane or briquettes for your camp stove.
This thread is awesome. We're going for the first time this summer and I can't wait but I don't really know what I'm doing. Thanks for the tips! My husband claims that we might not die because he was a boy scout lol

Separate bags for your dirty clothes (garbage bags work) 2x the clothes you think you'll need
I'm not much help because we probably don't qualify for your definition of camping, seeing how we have a 5th wheel monstrosity. I will say that it's very much worth the investment to have a 'camping set' of things if you're going to do it often. Bath towels, toiletries, etc.
I'm not a camper, but last time we went, the number one thing I missed was a french press for coffee. I had to drive 15 minutes to go find myself a coffee.

We're backpackers, but when we car camp, we basically pack the contents of a small studio apartment.
Once thing you didn't mention was headlamps. I find those much easier to use when walking around.
We also use those 5 day coolers--1 for meat, 1 for drinks, and a small one for drinking ice if you are mixing cocktails. I bring a cast iron skillet and a French press as well.

Us too. I used to tent camp when I was younger and into my early 20s but no more.

This is us. I don't know about you, but I have a "set" of things just for the camper. It was worth the expense, and if you plan on camping a lot, it would help to just have everything packed up in rubbermaid bins to throw in your car and take to the campsite.
