This was under my carport, right outside my back door. We were loading junk in the back of H's truck. Him and my 2 grandkids went in the house and I took one last bag out, turned around and this was coming out from under the cushion on my glider, where H had been sitting a few minutes before! It just kept coming, it was about 4 1/2 feet long. I screamed and ran, H came out and my daughter pulled up about the same time. I did not get a pic of it on the glider, no way but this is it right before H killed it.

h found a rat snake while riding his bike. He tried moving it out of the road, but it was injured already. He was so upset he had to kill it. I don't know that he or I could kill one just because. Poor snake.
Who was the ass who ran over snakes on purpose at a zoo?

I have no idea what kind it was. I hate snakes, if he hadn't killed it I would have not been able to go back outside. I'm sure there is more but I will pretend there is not. I would not kill one I saw in the wild, or run one over. But this was under the cushion on my glider! Less than 3 feet from my back door. In the spot my cat usually lays!

That's what your local wildlife control/rescue is for - they will relocate the snake for you, away from your house and yard.

I mean, I get it - scary snake, dead. I don't catch spiders in a cup and take them outside, either. Also, please note that I live in Big Cypress, so we've got anacondas and pythons and shit roaming around out here.
But, also because I live in Big Cypress, I know that much as "good" snakes freak me out, they eat shit that freaks me out more, so... and I know people that know and agree with this that have pretty much just killed a "good" snake because it was instinctual - scared them, coiled up, what-have-you.
I'm not sure, but honestly we might have killed it too. Do snakes have a home base? I'd be afraid that my house/yard was its home base and I have small dogs. One weighs 6lbs and could easily be a snake snack.
So there will be no judging from me. Maybe this makes me an asshole.

A few hours later, and a lot calmer - I do agree that I should have just let H throw it in the field behind us. But, I was literally thinking I was going to have a heart attack. What if my grandson had climbed up next to h and sat, I have 5 grandkids and all their riding toys are in my carport, I was panicking that it was right there while they had been right by it. I just hope no more show up, I'm in Tennessee and we have lots of them, but I don't want them right by me and under my cushions!
Was she supposed to send her grandkids out to play in the yard with a fucking four foot snake hanging out?
Honestly, her cat is probably the thing that is most at risk. But of course not. As others have pointed out, you call someone. If there is a stray dog that won't leave my yard and he may or may not be dangerous, but I don't like the way her looks and I really don't like dogs, I don't walk out the front door and shoot it. This is not any different just because it's a snake.
FTR, I have no issues with snakes and that would have creeped me out, so I get it. I'm sure it was scary, but it didn't need to die.

A snake that size isn't going to eat your cat. Promise.
Also, as long as it's not a venomous snake, a bite isn't going to do much more than scare you - and I say this as someone who has been bitten by much larger snakes in my line of work.
I admit that I'm biased because I work in zoo education and snakes are my favorite animals to teach about, but I can't stand it when people hurt harmless animals for no good reason other than irrational fear.
But! If it was a good snake (and I have no clue if it is) it could have eaten super huge venomous snakes. So if you get large venomous snakes in your yard now- well that's your own damn fault.
I ducking hate snakes. One followed me inside my house once when I was taking groceries. I had to stomp on its tail before it got underneath some furniture and h picked him up and threw it out in the yard.
Snakes kill rats though. So that's good.
I've only ever seen black snakes. That one you posted would have made me piss myself.
My grandmother is deathly afraid of snakes. She can't even see the plastic fake kind. She would have had another stroke of she saw that snake for sure.

My grandmother came home once to a giant snake curled up inside her kitchen. That was the last time she left her window open for the breeze.

I'm team don't kill snakes, but that is not exactly true. Maybe it woukdn't EAT it, but I watched a MUCH smaller snake almost kill my childhood rabbit. It was completely wrapped around it & it's eyes were bulging from it's head. Luckily my mom & the guys next door unraveled it with a broom handle, but the rabbit was paralyzed for 2-3 days. She wasn't wrong to be concerned, it just could have been handled without the snake having to die.
I'm sad that you killed it. it's just a poor creature, living its life.
But I'm a lunatic who can't even kill a damn fly, so my opinion could be way skewed. (Literally, I capture flies and put them back outside...)
DH trapped a yellow jacket in between the window and screen the other day. It was buzzing around in there. Logically, I know it would have stung me as soon as I released it, nor was there a good way to get it from where it was trapped back outside. Plus, yellow jackets are fucking mean. I still had this weird sadness about it though.
