Cheaper than a cab, very easy. Even though everyone around here uses it, I actually don't usually use UberX (the regular cars) unless I'm with my H; here we have the option to choose cabs or livery cars through Uber, too, so I use those when I'm on my own. You'll be fine together.
You can text us a picture of the uber driver's account thinger before you get in, so if you die we know where to send the cops. At least if you die, you will be avenged!
I was paranoid just a few short weeks ago. I used it 10ish times in SF over the weekend and it was AMAZING. Our flight got in at 1am and we waited 4 minutes. We left our hotel at 5:30am to catch our flight and we waited less than 1 minute (oops, that was lyft-but he drove for uber too, we just had a coupon code!). I love that you see their faces, car, and license plate on the app before they pick you up. Made me feel SO much safer.
ETA: If uber says there's a surge, check lyft too. Our ride to the airport on uber was going to be $50 b/c of surge, but it was only $30 on lyft.

I use it all the time by myself, although I'm not taking it at 1am blackout drunk alone (I don't think I'd be comfortable doing it in that situation TBH). It's so much cheaper than a cab and really fast. We also have uber carpool now, which is even better most of the time.
I love Uber, *and* you get a $15 credit for signing up. If one of you already has an account, use their account referral code and they'll get $10, you'll get $15.
I think as long as you aren't using it during peak time, the rates are really fair. We used it extensively for my birthday trip, because everybody in this bitch was indeed getting tipsy. You can also see a fare estimate, and shuffle through drivers to one with a good rating. The app is user friendly.

I took my first Uber in MALAYSIA from my friends house to the airport - about 45 minutes. You think I was nervous?! I totally was. But they were like "oh, everyone uses it here", so I did it. It was SO EASY, I felt safe, I was hooked. I took it all over Asia and now I'v used it at home, too. My parents and I went to Seattle last weekend and traffic there is AWFUL so we parked at the hotel then took Uber EVERYWHERE. They are also hooked.
I think it's safer than cabs, etc. because there's such a trail of info, you have the driver's license #, photo, you can follow the routes on the map as you drive, etc.

It's usually $4.50 one way for me to get to work and parking is around $16, so I always take Uber. I love it. I've been using uberx the whole time and have never felt threatened or in danger.
A- you'll be fine. We use it all the time. It's so easy.
B- do you really want to be drinking alone on your b-day?? I'd be thrilled if DH wanted to spring for an Uber/cab so he could join me!
It's true it would be more fun if we were both drinking. I mean, he could have a beer and still drive, but of course that's not the same. I just stress over money a lot. Also please note that he recently brushed off my complaint about having to abstain for 9 months if we have another kid with the comment "you have your whole life to drink!" yet he scoffed at my suggestion that he could also abstain if it was so easy to do. lol
They're often cheaper than cabs and certainly alot cheaper than a DUI/accident/worse!
I'm generally pretty cheap so I use the subways almost always. I use uber the later it is and the drunker I am (and if I'm alone because there is nothing worse than having to walk over a mile home at 3 am because you slept through your stop). So my very scientific case study tells me it's safe.
My first experience with Uber was my husband showing up in the driveway in an Uber car an hour late from work, Don-Draper-drunk from his company Christmas party.
Having dealt with my very drunk, very sweaty, Christmas-suited husband, who eventually passed out mid-sentence on the couch, I know for a fact that Uber driver did not make enough that night. Not even close.
My point is - Uber is great for the fish of the world.
My H once told me the car he was in was getting pulled over. It wasn't. To this day I still don't understand, but he was just that drunk. Who knows what else he said or did on the way home. That poor driver.

We used Lyft once or twice in Vegas, which is the same gist, and everything was fine. It was easy, the drivers were really friendly, and it was basically free due to discount codes/free rides we got for signing up (we basically just paid a tip both times but nothing for the fare).
I'm a nervous, at times paranoid, person, but I honestly wasn't too worried about this and everything turned out great. Do it! We plan to use Uber in town this summer for nights when we go to an outdoor concert and both want to drink liberally.
