I have no idea what we should be doing. We just started today and hit level 5. I don't know what to do about the eggs and stuff. On the plus side we have a ton of poke stops around here. In fact my building is one!
Go to Pokestops and spin the circle -- you'll get stuff from it.
If you walk while leaving the app open, the eggs will hatch (if you put them in incubators -- you get one free from the start of the game for infinite uses, and you can buy additional with coins). You can only hold 9 eggs at a time, and only hatch as many eggs as you have incubators. And the app HAS to be open for the mileage to count.
Brie you are where I was last week. Level 10, feeling down, getting the same ones over and over. Do what chilerellanos said, transfer the weak ones, hoard candy and when you have enough to evolve the cheap ones (pidgey, caterpie, and Weedle each only need 12 candies to evolve), pop a lucky egg and evolve a bunch at once. You get 500XP anytime you evolve, even if you already have that Pokemon. So the lucky egg doubles that, and you get 1000 XP for each evolution. That's the trick to leveling up your trainer fast. You find more rare, fun Pokemon at higher trainer levels. I was feeling good at 12, even better at 15. Now I'm seeing the shadows of Pokemon I've never seen before (drowsee, Dratini, Rhydon, and Wartortise today). I didn't catch any of those, but I know they're out there!

Ok I'm an idiot. How do I access the incubator?
On the main screen, tap Pokemon, then eggs in the upper right. All the eggs you've collected from pokestops will be displayed. Tap one to incubate it. A tip: use your single unlimited incubator for 2km eggs, since those go fast. Save the 3-use incubators for 5&10km eggs, since you only get 3 uses out of each incubator. More "bang for your buck" with this method.
I've been buying shit left and right. I give no fucks. Poke balls, incense, lucky eggs, and lures. I just don't have enough pokestops in my town to keep a decent supply for free.
I finally gave up caring about buying items today. I realized I have limited time to play Pokemon with 1 kid, and hardly EVER with 0 kids. I need to maximize the small opportunities I do have.

Where do you get lucky eggs? Do you buy them?
You get a few for reaching new trainer levels, you can google "trainer level rewards" to see them all. But I mostly buy them, 80 poke coins it. Well worth it IMHO.
Have you checked out that pokevision site? That might help you!
Ooh very interesting, thank you! This confirms that there are NO Pokemon near my house, as I already knew. And that the Pokemon "nearby" screen is broken, at least for me. I knew there's a bug for everyone that all Pokemon show up as 3 steps away. But I thought that maybe the order of the nearby Pokemon was still functional. Well, I spent quite awhile today chasing the shadow of a Dratini that I don't think was actually there. I chased it down to #1 in my nearby list and it just would.not.pop.up. I don't think it was ever actually there.
How do you get such high level ones? I have evolved my highest ones but they are still only around 400 cp. Do I need to be powering them up?
The level of wild Pokemon you catch is tied to your trainer level. So it's best to level up your trainer, so you'll catch better stuff. And yes, I power up my best Pokemon.

That's a bummer but at least you know!
But you know what places to hit up now!
Yes I do, thank you! I get random Clefairy in my downtown area, which is exciting as I'd like to evolve one into a Clefable since it's a good gym defender (it has high defense and stamina). Hopefully the pokevision will allow me to find the wild clefairy more easily.

DD loves playing, so I think I'm taking her out to the lakeshore on a Pokemon hunt tomorrow after we drop DS off at daycare. It's going to be crazy hot and humid, but she'll be thrilled.
swizz it's uncanny how as soon as I say I want to (or already did) catch something, you get it! It's weird! I said I wanted a Scyther, you caught a 400 one in your house. I was super excited about catching a 400ish Pinsir, you get a 700 Pinsir.
I wonder if I can control this magical ability for the betterment of your lineup. I want to catch a Dragonite!

@supergreen,according to the pokevision there is a dragonlite like 4 houses away....sadly I am in bed and don't really feel like running outside at the moment. I am hoping it decides to pop up in my bedroom ha
How did I keep the feisty ones (aka the ones I want) from escaping?
What level are you? You get razz berries (to feed feisty Pokemon) at level 9 I think, and great balls (better catch rates that regular poke balls) at level 12. And always aim for the circle when it's the smallest.

Level 11, so I get the berries. I thought they just made the Pokemon easier to hit with the ball, not necessarily easier to hold on to.

The sole purpose of the berries is to make them more compliant to stay in the ball. They're very effective. Just remember, using a berry helps the catch rate for ONLY the next ball that grabs the Pokemon. If it breaks free (but doesn't run away), you'll need to use another razz berry. I've found the combo of berry + great ball + throwing when the circle is smallest to be very effective.

Also turn off AR, it centers the Pokemon in the screen and makes them much easier to hit with the ball.

I had a decent day today!! Took over all three gyms by me in a row on a walk. That lasted a hot second, now the closest one has a 2200 cp dragonite in it. Here is my current roster:
Wow LoveTrains a Lapras and a Magmar! You've got a great lineup. Did you catch those or hatch them? I'm halfway through my only 10km egg, I'm DYING to see what it is!
We're going on a family hike this morning, it's egg hatching time! I'm sure there will be a zillion Pokemon, which I'll have to ignore because it's a family outing and I don't want to have my face in my phone the whole time. But I'm not losing those steps! Maybe I'll just turn off the sound and vibration features. Turn the game into a glorified pedometer.

I caught the lapras and hatched the magmar!
The lapras will be much stronger but I need candy to power it up.
