I started to type out a long response, before realizing who was asking! miso
I wasn't interested in the game, but after hearing him blab about it and reading this thread to him, I got more into it. We usually go to a park to play, but we have a 2 year old with us, so one of us play on his phone while the other watches the kid. Then we stitch off. I am still not really into all the details, so it works for me.
Paras doesn't have a very good evolution multiple, so you're never going to get a super strong Parasect. Best I've ever found was 580 CP, and that was at trainer level 24. It evolved to 1089 Parasect. So I think 950-1000 is prett good. Parasect is useful if it gets bug bite/solar beam. Bug bite charges solar beam really fast, which then takes out water Pokemon like Vaporeon. Parasect is especially handy for training friendly gyms. If you use a Parasect to take on a water Pokemon with double its CP, you get maximum prestige to level up the gym to put your own Pokemon in.
I forgot! I used my 1123 bug bite/solar beam Parasect to take down a much stronger (like 1700ish) Vaporeon today. It was close but I won and took over the whole gym from just the one battle.
So, basically, listen to @supergreen!
Good job Brie! Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. You have to be good at dodging for this technique to work too, so good work! I'm glad the idea worked for you! I love seeing that silly mushroom bug take down the mighty water monster.
Evolve everything you can ASAP, w/o powering up, because it is a waste to power up something and not get the best moves. If you get the moves you want, then work on powering up. He had been saving things and slowly powering up, but some of the evolutions weren't great, so he felt like it was a waste of stardust and candy. I think this is the theory, anyway!

Ah ok. That's what everyone I know does, including me. Evolve first, check the moveset, then power up if the moves are good.

Yeah, it makes sense. He had just been hanging on to a lot of stuff and all of a sudden was like why am I waiting?
I hatched a pretty good Scyther this morning. I already had 5, but this one has a higher CP, so I can use the candies from the others to power him up even more. Blanche says he's a wonder! lol
I'm also halfway to my second Gyrados!
I still haven't evolved a lot because I'm waiting to use my lucky egg. I keep waiting to see if I'll find a better base Pokemon, too. I feel like I would, after I level up (I'm only 21).

What's the moveset on your Scyther? Fury cutter/bug buzz is double effective against Exeggcutor. I'd power him up for sure if he has those moves! Pokemon from eggs usually have good IVs, 80% or above. Blanche says my hatched Pokemon are wonders too

Yeah, he doesn't have those moves. He's got Steel Wing and Night Slash.

Hmmm. Personally I wouldn't invest stardust in a Scyther with those moves. Neither one gets the 25% attack bonus (for the move being the same type as the pokemon's type). Just my opinion though!

OK. What should I buy? I finally have 200 coins so the world is my oyster. lol.
I still have 3 incense, 2 lucky eggs, and 4 lures that I got from leveling up, so I don't need to buy any now. I don't use them often because they usually disappoint me.
incubator - this was my first inclination. Technically, it's like buying 3 pokemon, albeit they have a chance of being pretty good quality and/or new to me.
bag upgrade - I was really thinking about this, but then I asked myself why I am carrying around 250 potions/revives all the time. So I dumped another 50, which is kind of equivalent to an extra 50 slots.
pokemon storage upgrade - does anyone ever run in to trouble with this limit? I'm sitting around 200 right now. Maybe I just need to clean up some. Usually I catch whatever I catch during the day, then transfer stuff at night, so I get closer to the limit as the day goes on.
Also, I finally tried the army of pidgeottos strategy this morning. i.e., attack a gym with all the crap you don't care about, then transfer without using potions on them. I wanted to report back it was a giant failure. lol. I ran out of time before I even defeated the first defender. At least I didn't have to waste any potions on them.
Is this guy worth powering up or should I evolve another one? I'd like to try and start battling but I have zero clue about move sets. @supergreen or anyone else.
dit16 , that's the best moveset but it'll be expensive to power that one up all the way because it's not very high on it's arc. If you get a lot of eevees, I'd wait. I think I have 3 or 4 vaporeons with water gun and either aqua tail or hydro pump which are both good.
mpc , I like my bag upgrade. I'm also tempted by lucky eggs especially now that the XP requirements to level are so high. Those incubators are so pricey. The truth is that most of my coins have gone to pokeballs. (wilted)

What is your trainer level? I wouldn't power up anything until level 18 at least, ideally level 20. You'll start seeing much strong wild Mons around that time. And you'll regret wasting stardust powering up other Mons.
That being said, that's Vaporeon's best moveset! Congrats! I've make 7 or 8 Vaporeons and never gotten hydro pump.
I caught a wild Vileplume today! The bastard literally escaped 20 times and used up all my Ultra balls and most of my other ones too. His CP isn't great, but it's an addition to the Pokedex for me and candy for when I can evolve my very strong Gloom soon.
I also caught a stronger Wartortle than what I have already, and two Pikachu.
I am so so excited about this new buddy Pokemon feature. Everything I'm reading says the feature should be rolled out mid next week. So, you can select a buddy Pokemon, which will appear behind your avatar on your screen. The FB post says you get candy for walking with your buddy Pokemon, and also hints at other rewards. I am SO excited about this! I am constantly searching for Growlithes (which don't spawn here) to power up my beloved pet Arcanine. With this feature I'll get candy just for walking with Arcanine!
I'm curious what the candy rewards will be. 1 candy per km seems too easy. Will the candy reward scale based on Pokemon rarity? I certainly hope so! Otherwise EVERYBODY is going to pick Snorlax, Lapras, or Dragonite as their buddy, and they will fill the gyms even more than they do already. I hope the rarer the Pokemon, the more you have to walk to get candy. I hope Niantic realized this!
Zach was telling me about this the other day but I was half sleeping and totally forgot.
Somebody found a reference to buddy Pokemon in the game's code a few days ago. So the PoGo community was just speculating that the feature would happen at some point. But today this is an official announcement from Niantic! The feature will be rolled out very soon. So it's certainly happening.

Hmm. I might pick Squirtle or Bulbasaur because I hardly see them and want to evolve them. Same goes for Dratini who would be the better choice for battling.
