DS is 2 and a smidge, and everyone wants to know what to get him for Christmas... are there games that are appropriate for 2yos? Trying to think of something other than hordes of giant plastic toys.
My kids loved. That age (and still play with at 3 and 5) Melissa and Doug chunky wooden puzzles, and reusable sticker pads (I forgot what they called when we kids...some kind of cling?), cootie is a fun "board" game he will like when he's not much older. Candyland too.
He might be able to get into Sneaky Snacky Squirrel if he's picking up colors and numbers. Matching card games too, just keep it to 2 or 3 pictures to start (4 to 6 cards). C's favorite first board game was "Richard Scarry's Busytown Eye Found It" too, but he may have been closer to 3 to really figure it out.
FWIW, I always ask for gifts that are a bit advanced for the age, so we have some things on hand down the road to bring out when they get bored with current toys/need a new challenge.

Pop the Pig is one of our favorites. DD is 5, but it could be played by a 2 year old with some assistance. There's no reading - just colors and counting.
My 2 yo can play the most basic version of Snug As A Bug in a Rug. I particularly like this game because you can change the rules as kids age to make it a harder game. So my 5yo and I use the advanced rules and the 2yo uses the simple rules and we can all play together.
I'm getting my kids Animal upon Animal this Christmas. The manufacturer recommends age 4 but elsewhere I've read people suggesting age 3. I figure my 2 yo will grow into it soon enough.
David definitely wasn't ready for board games at that age but all kids are different obviously. He loved puzzles, though. We had several of the large floor puzzles.

Yeah DS definitely isn't ready for traditional board games which is why I put it in quotes, lol. I need to look into floor puzzles. He is somewhat into puzzles, but they can be hit or miss.

It's just hard for me to know what's "normal" since I only have one. David couldn't sit through a movie until he was 4 and I had no idea that was weird until here!
He was obsessed with firetrucks, trains and construction stuff back then so I found puzzles that spoke to that. It was also something we could do together. He still loves puzzles!

Our boys sound like kindred spirits, haha. Mine also will only watch TV if it's real footage of trash trucks, and is obsessed with fire trucks and construction vehicles. lol

We have this game - and I think its great. Maybe a little old, but most kids can match the animals without a problem. It has a long shelf life as well, my 10 and 7 year old still play.

L loves Seek a Boo. Thanks for posting this thread, though - I was just wondering the other day about another game for her.
And she LOVES puzzles, good lord. We do this one jungle jigsaw puzzle multiple times a day. And she makes me pretend her baby doll is picking up the pieces and putting them down. It's a lot of work lol.
I think a 2 year old could play Cooties, since it is really just putting together a bug. We modify the start rules even now, so that you can start with whatever piece you get first, instead of waiting for a body and head.
It's a little too advanced, but I played Memory with the kids when they were 2. I'd get a character theme they liked, have the cards picture up, encouraging them to find a match.
I think I'm going to get DD some sort of memory game for Christmas (she's 2.5), though we'll probably start with just matching them face up. And she's really good at the wooden puzzles, so I want to try a few simple jigsaw puzzles.
