I love Sutton and there was some funny stuff in the musical stuff and I agree it did show how out of it Lorelei is because she'd normally love that but I agree it was way too long.
I agree the pool stuff was too mean.
I'm pretty sure the blonde in the 30 somethings group was in Bunheads as well.
Grown up Jess is nice on the eyes and I liked his character, he seemed kind and caring.

The musical was awful. Painfully awful. I agree though, that old Lorelei would have loved it. I love PP's analysis that it shows how out of sync with her life she is.
WTF was with those two little boys following Rory and Lorelei around???
I also agree that the April story line was just super weird. So, is she so super duper smart that her dad needs a dictionary to read her letters (also, why is she sending letters??), or is she faking it and really she's just a normal college kid? Why did she and Rory seem so awkward with each other? Presumably they've had 10 years of seeing each other at holidays if no other time. There would be at least a little bit of shared history there.
This made slightly more sense after I realized that was her pool book. But still crazy. Though, she seems so out of sync with herself that it almost makes sense.
I knew it wasn't going to be a great episode when I saw that Daniel Palladino both wrote and directed it. He was my least favorite writer when the original series was still in production, and this episode felt like a retread of everything I disliked about his work the first time around.

I think Daniel is very polarizing. I love him, always have. And his eps are usually my favorite. But I totally understand why people don't. He's a weirdo

I noticed her pool book (one of the many revival pop culture references that will quickly be dated IMO). I still don't see it. So dramatic, even for Lorelei. Hiking?!

Well they did backpack around Europe. The hiking I didn't find that odd.

LOL this is so funny because I saw he wrote and directed it and was like "OH GODDAMMIT THIS WILL BE GARBAGE." But I am one of the people who hates all Daniel episodes, which is probably colored by my time spent on TWOP back in the day, where the recappers all hated Daniel too.
But Summer was my absolute least favorite of the episodes. He did write Spring too, which I loved, though.
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

I feel like it's already dated. And when the one girl mentioned she almost did Eat Pray Love that's also realllllly dated to me.
I noticed there were two nods to Reese Witherspoon in this episode with the movie and with the Totes y'all bag from Draper James.

I noticed Lorelei wearing a shirt that said something about brunch that really jumped out as...a few years ago LOL. And yeah, I read Wild in 2013.

When I saw it was DP I said "Oh, well, this one will be mean." I was right.

I guess I never paid attention to whether it was ASP or DP writing/directing the episodes. Now I'm curious. Can someone give an example of one DP episode they either loved or hated (in the original series)?

So I've never paid attention either and was curious so I looked him up on IMDB and he's actually done some I like and some I don't like as much, so I guess he doesn't bother me? lol
Looks like he wrote We Got Us a Pippi Virgin which I hate but he also wrote Luke Can See Her Face and Last Week Fights This Week Tights, which I like. He's also listed for The Lorelais' First Day at Yale which I adore.

I wonder how much Lorelai rewriting Amy did on his episodes. Writers that have been on Gilmore Guys said that no matter who the episode was credited to, Amy wrote all of Lorelai's lines herself. That's a huge portion of the show! Not sure if that applies to Dan's episodes, though.

The first day at Yale episode is one of my all-time favorites!
