Congrats! I don't post much here anymore but I've read some of your work-related posts. I also worked for a small, effed up law firm in Milwaukee so your stories sure hit home with me.

Congrats!!!!!!
I agree with the other posters who suggested accepting this job, but still going on the other interview on Thursday. If you end up getting that job, you can always back out of the DC one. If you take the DC job and it doesn't work out, you can always move back. But if you turn down the job, it's gone forever.
I'd also see if you can get more than 2 weeks before you start, because that's not a lot of time to move across the country. But you could just pack a suitcase and stay in an extended-stay hotel (like a Residence Inn) for the first couple of weeks while you look for something more permanent. There are a lot of us in DC here, so we can give you advice about good places to live.

Completely agree. And given my experience with Fed hiring (as well as the experience of others), it could be a long time before you have another similar opportunity if you change your mind.
So I'm about to go make a call and accept the position.
I will wait until tomorrow after my therapy appointment to give my notice so that I have a chance to talk it through.
H is not thrilled, but I don't know what else to do at this point. I have friends who live about a 20-minute walk from the metro. They will let me stay in their guest room for a couple of weeks while I find a place.
So I basically have two weeks to pack (I'll bring 2 suitcases and have H mail me a couple of boxes), but a plane ticket, say goodbye to all my friends, and sell my car. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG.

another semi-lurker coming out of the woodwork to wish you all the best. I know it was a hard decision to move away from your husband but really feel that you will thank yourself for this as time goes along. Congratulations --- it has been a long time coming and no one deserves this more than you.

Woohooo!!! Please provide us an update on giving notice.
So is Dr.Harpy going to join you immediately or at the end of the school year?

Harpy, I am freaking out for you! I keep coming back here to see if you have told your bosses to take your job & shove it yet. I can't imagine how tough this must be for you & your husband though.

Were you planning to sell your car anyway, or are you only doing it because you don't think DC is "car friendly"? If the latter, you may want to think about bringing your car with you.
We live in DC proper and are so glad we have a car, even though it means we have to pay a little extra for parking. The Metro tends to be a hot mess on weekends (really long times between trains, and these days they are constantly doing track work, which means significant delays and/or the substitution of shuttle buses). And even on weekdays we don't use it unless we are commuting -- I find that outside the peak times it often takes me less time to drive, especially given how prone the system is to delays.
So having a car is awesome -- we use it virtually every weekend to run errands and things. All the grocery stores and big box stores (e.g. Target) that we visit in DC have parking structures that are either free or a nominal cost. I also haven't had that much trouble in finding on-street parking. Plus, with a car, we can go into Virgina to run errands (e.g. Costco), access parts of Virginia that aren't on the Metro, etc. Plus, it makes for easy weekend getaways to wine country, Annapolis, and the like (well, at least before DD arrived).
If you are planning to live outside DC proper, then there is even more reason to bring the car with you -- that will really increase your ability to get around on weekends for errands, socializing, etc.
