I mean, not one hand in a full circle, but I can start with my hands both on at my sternum on my bra band and run them around till they meet at the clasp in the back without losing contact. My shoulders are wonky, but i'm not double jointed or anything. I'm now sitting here doing it with my chapstick (with the lid on) pretending it's body glide to make sure I'm not the nutball.
Well fuck.
to be fair, I'm pretty sure you're a hell of a lot more muscular than I am. But I totally just wandered over to my fairly buff new hire and she also is fully capable of pretend body gliding her entire bra band.
So I have a vent from my first group ride this weekend.
I was one of TWO females. I roll up to the meeting point, and am promptly ignored by the two guys there after I said good morning to them. Other female rolls up and introduces herself. Then looks at me and says "well OBVIOUSLY you're a triathlete. Are you sure you shouldn't be riding with the triathletes this morning?"
1. Fuck you 2. Insinuating that triathletes can't ride a bike like hardcore cyclists? Sure, talk to me on the bike after you're done with your mile and a half swim. 3. Double fuck you.
What the mother fuck? Is this a thing? Because you do other sports, you can't sports with people who one sports one sport?

Ok, I'm mad for you right now - but primarily I'm stuck on how you were visibly a triathlete? How did she know? Also she should clearly go fuck herself.
I've found swimming people and running people to be lovely and supportive and friendly - and bike people to be an iffy 70/30. The 70% of cool people are pretty cool, but those other ones...man. They suck.

Tri shorts and aerobars.
And yeah there are a bunch of bags of dicks on wheels. And I find that most of them can't handle their bikes.
Ah, those would be dead giveaways. though thought aerobars were a no-no on group rides? did I make that up? (not that i have aerobars. or ever go on group rides...)

Yeah, I can do this, too, and I have pretty tight shoulders.

Likewise. I just pretended my phone was a stick of bodyglide and I can totally do all the way around, although the very middle was a little touch and go there for a bit. LOL

Oh! And for my complaints ... I have started thinking about END-WET for next year and as a result, I was talking to R the other day about the logistics of training for that and he got all pissy about the very *idea* of sitting in a kayak for more than 2 hours. UGH. Listen, dude. Support me or not, I don't care. I'll just do my training swims by myself if I have to. But don't start whining preemptively when I haven't even **ASKED** if you're planning on helping. Also, we sold our damn kayak, so we can get you a more comfortable one, geez.
And in the same vein, but more personally, how the hell DO you train for a 36 mile swim? I mean, that's like 12-18 hours, depending on the current. That's a lot of training, especially considering how our lakes around here don't warm up enough to do ultra-long swims until like ... March. Can I actually succeed at an 18 hour swim with just 3 months of outdoor swimming? I think it's time to start saving for an endless pool.
I am so crabby over my sprained ankle. It hasn't even been a week and I am over resting, elevating and icing. I am doing it all because I want to heal, but I want to run dammit! I was cranky with a friend because I sprained it doing a trail run and I told him it was Karma biting me in the ass (long story). He said it is actually me not knowing how to run trails. I reminded him that he is a road runner who face planted at mile 6 of a road 10k. He wasn't happy with me; and I wasn't happy with him. I just want to heal fast; but I am trying to be patient. I don't want to do any further damage.
I tweaked my hamstring right in the crease of my ass. How the f do I compress that?
Oh, and also, it's hot and I'm slow. But, it's summer so what else is new? Only 4 months to go!
And wambam, I can bodyglide all the way around, and aquaphor, and buy new bras, but I'm still crying in the shower after my long runs. So I'll be sitting here bitching about it all summer long if and when you need to join!

Yes!! I have found this also in my tri club. There are a bunch of cyclists who don't actually swim or run (fine, I don't care, you do what you like) but then on social media they actively put down those of us who do swim and run. These are the same people who made up the 'grading system' that says if you only ride 15-16 mph you are in the 'Taking In The Scenery' category. F*&k them. If I am slogging it out and my maximum speed is 16mph, I'm definitely not taking in the scenery, thanks very much. I started naming my rides on strava 'TITS' rides. Shorter rides were Small Tits etc. I don't need people comparing me openly to their performance. I'm not. I'm competing against myself.
Same for running - if your 5k time is 40 mins and you've grafted hard to get that, I'll be your biggest cheerleader. I will not tell you you're not fast enough or taking it seriously. Ugh - I'm so mad about this topic.
I do often wonder what the hell they are doing in a tri club if they don't like triathletes? Soooo freaking weird.

I have no advice but I just want to say I want to hear how you attempt this training and how the event goes. I'm in awe right now.
wait...what? You can't run a hand around your entire bra band area? do you have a shoulder mobility issue?
No....
Wait, is this pathological? LOL
Chiming in. You should be able to do this. Didn't your neck pain start with overhead lifting and stuff during crossfit? You're shoulder mobility (and stability in that range you're missing) may be to blame!
I have been drinking and eating like crap. Granted I'm on a mini vacation now but this has been going on for months. I need to reign it in. Granted I have no on but myself to blame.

I have so many questions! How do you fuel for a race THAT long? Your support kayak carries it, right? And do you get to hang on to take the fuel?

Mine is probably obvious. I've done nothing but sit or walk for weeks. I'm still in a giant neck brace. I can't lift more than 5 lbs. I feel useless. And everyone is bringing us meals (which is awesome) but I have no control over what we have to eat cause I can't grocery shop or cook. Hopefully getting some more independence back in 2 weeks but until then... Ugh!

How crinkly do your fingers get? Do you wee in your wetsuit? Do you get sleepy? We have so many questions.
For some strange reason I keep getting a swimming cramp in my right foot when exercising/stretching (but never while swimming). I have no idea what's causing it or how to get rid of it.
I pulled a muscle up by my left shoulder. . It fucking hurts. I have a pain med and a musclear relax be there of which I feel is helping that much. Also o vuously basically.no exercise for the next week. It hurts

Allow me to recap yesterday:
1) a power line snapped in our back yard, so we were without power for 7 hours (thankfully it only hit 95)
2) the sparks ignited the dry grass my neighbors back yard and burned out a 5 ft section of the fence that divides our properties (thankfully that was the only damage)
3) while hanging out in our silenced house, we heard a dripping from the water heater. DH broke the drain valve (the likely cause of the leak if the plastic broke so quickly). Cue a night of heat fueled frustration.
4) I made it 2 blocks into my run before the burn on my leg made it very clear it needs another non running day to heal.

Good questions, actually. The fueling does come from our support boat. I've found that I feed best about every 30 minutes or so, alternating a semi-real-food (I use toddler food pouches) with an 8-ounce serving of electrolyte/carb mix (UCan). So, toddler food on the half hour, UCAN on the hour. They are not permitted to (intentionally) touch us, nor we them, so people have come up with a variety of different feeding mechanisms, but the most common is to either tie a string to the fuel and throw it at us or use a fishing net. R and I just were careful in our handoffs and it worked out ok. At present, there is no hanging on to the kayak in order to take the fuel - USMS rules, as well as marathon swimming rules, prohibit it. USMS is considering reworking this rule to allow people to hang onto the kayak provided there is no forward motion, like USA Triathlon does. I am not in favor of this, generally speaking, so I'll still NOT hang on the kayak. Instead, you do something called "ottering" where you kind of float on your back and take the fuel, or you tread water while you fuel (I'm a latter person).
As far as training goes, I'm actually yet to get into the water this year (I'm embarrassed to admit that). I've got to get to a 5-6 swim/week place before I can even start thinking about training. In November, I'll consult my endurance guru and see what she recommends for training. That gives me more than 6 months, which I think will be enough.

No crinkle, believe it or not. I've never been a raisin-y person.
No wetsuit. Just pee while swimming - I've finally mastered this art (it only took me 35 years!)
I've never been sleepy while swimming, but I've gotten bored, lol. I need to come up with a couple new songs to learn for my mental radio, because singing Margaritaville and 5 oclock somewhere to yourself for 6 hours is seriously boring.
mrs.jacinthe, I am truly fascinated - thank you for answering all the questions! Keep us posted on how training goes, what distances you do and what's working/not.

I just did the same thing and no issues either. I mean, it's how you are able to put a bra on right? If you can reach the clasp in the back, you can reach all of the areas?

I put my bra on in the front and turn it around.
Also, I realized that I can touch the area in question, but I can't make my shoulder and therefore hand move enough to apply anything. I'm not describing this accurately, I know.

I can't say if you're describing it accurately, but it does really sound like you have some limited shoulder mobility and/or weakness. I know you and your PT are like peas and carrots - is this something you've ever worked on? I'm really curious about this now - particularly chicken/egg with your neck.
(what's with the food pairings? I might be hungry)

She's messed with my shoulder and assessed it before. I can definitely ask her about it though. Now that I'm thinking about it, I've never tried with my right hand. Maybe it's just a clumsiness with my left hand.

It could be clumsiness or even less flexibility on one side compared to the other, especially with that motion. Work your cow face arms (with a strap) to increase your shoulder mobility.
