Dude hotdogs are delicious. My kid is still under one BUT when he will have hotdogs! Probably only when we grll though, which isn't often since I don't have a grill ha ha. SO when we go some place with a grill.
But man, when i was young my mom used to make me hotdogs for school lunch. She would put them in warm water in a thermos. I was the envy of all the kids.
I messed up your poll, sorry. I meant to click yes and then DD jumped on the keyboard. In any event, she's had a hot dog, but likes regular sausages and chorizo a lot more, so doesn't have hot dogs often.

I've tried to serve my kids hot dogs but they won't touch them with a ten foot pole. These kids will try just about any food, go diaper fishing and stick poop in their mouth, but wouldn't even let the hot dogs near them. What kid does that?!? However, that meant more grilled hot dogs for DH and me, so it was all good.
I have fed my under 1year old hotdogs :/ I cut it into itty bitty pieces and get the nitrite free ones. My 4 year old likes veggie hotdogs so he eats those. I'd say they each eat like 2 a month?

I don't like hotdogs, so I don't buy them. The few times my daughter had them was at my parents' house. My mother gave my daughter a hotdog a week before her first birthday. She held it and let my daughter gnaw on it. She was baffled that this annoyed me, since in her words "you don't seem to care about her choking on other things"(we did baby led-weaning).
Edit to add- she really likes them, so I have no problem with her eating, them as long as they are cut up.
It is not something I buy at home with any frequency, but they love them and have them a few times a year at places like grandparents' houses, ballgames, 4th of July cookouts, etc. If we are at an event where hotdogs are being served (which doesn't happen often), I am certainly not going to prohibit my kids from having one.
I am surprised so many have never had them! I don't plan on making them on the regular but for grill outs, etc. I don't mind it being an option. Although we will cut them in chunks, I learned that on MMMs!
If you don't have a grill and don't take your kid somewhere like Central Park or Coney Island often, I could see how a hot dog moment may not have come up in your young child's life.
I went through a summer as a child where I did like hot dogs. When I was about 11 I would pan fry one in my kitchen and then put a half string cheese in the middle. All while my mom was at work and my 13 year old brother was "in charge."
Time have changed.
This sounds kind of delicious. My meal of choice as a latch-key kid was an English-muffin nuked in the microwave with a slice of Velveeta and some Ragu sauce.
Beanie weenies! Pigs in a blanket, slit down the middle and "fried" in the cast iron, Coney dog style, and plain ol' grilled and topped with mustard. All staples in my diet growing up and they have translated into easy dinners during many a hectic week.
Nope. I am terrified of choking. Not worth the risk IMO. Even adults can easily choke on hotdogs and grapes. I will probably hold off on them until age 5.

I checked no, but I should have checked other. My 3 year old has had a couple of hot dogs in his lifetime, but the 1 year old has not. I answered for the 1 year old... We really only eat hot dogs at baseball games.

It's not that hard to cut them up. See: the hot dog cutter that sparked this post.

I would trust myself to cut them, but not the grandparents who watch them sometimes, so it is easier for me to ban them altogether.

Yes, DS eats hotdogs a lot. He gets them especially at restaurants as he can't have dairy and the kids meals tend to be fried chicken, grilled cheese, mac and cheese, or hot dog. At home we buy the nitrite free beef dogs, I'm sure the restaurant ones are a little more suspect.
My eyes have really been opened to the dangers of grapes and hot dogs the past few weeks. We looove serving hot dogs at home Icelandic style. (We special order our dogs! lol) We'll most likely serve them up to our kiddo, but dice them finely.
So is there still a danger if you slice the dog the long way 2-3 times to thin it out, then lay it back into the bun? Or should buns be avoided for the first few years?

I would say your kid isn't going to really be able to eat a dog in a bun until they're 2-3. It's kind of a big mouthful.
Yuck, i've always hated them and they're not something you'll find in our house. That said, I don't care if my kids get the occasional hot dog at a friends place or camping etc.
Keep in mind that I am vegetarian. I let DD eat meat occasionally, but it is mostly the free range, fresh from the farm type stuff. (except when daycare feeds her chicken nuggets - ewww.)
Hotdogs are just one of those things I will likely never get comfortable with. And they certainly weren't a childhood staple for me - I know I had one at a party once, but I don't ever remember my mom serving them.

My kids are two and still can barely hold a sandwich together (because they like to pick it apart) unless it's glued together with melted cheese or peanut butter, so a hot dog on a bun is still a ways off.
