So who is in the path? Is this a big deal where you live (either way)? If you aren't in the path, will you be traveling to see it? Will people you know? Is it a "thing"?
Most of my area is in the path of totality and it's a pretty big deal here. People are afraid others will be flocking the area.
We plan to watch at work. The entire Us is supposed to see at least some of it from what I read. That is sufficient for me. . I'm hoping ds gets to see it at school since he will be there at the time. My parents in the Midwest should have an awesome sighting and they couldn't care less. . I wouldn't travel for it because there's no guarantee or good weather to see it anyway!

I bought eclipse glasses, although I'm not in the path. I'm about a 6 hour drive from the total eclipse and I'm tempted to drive. It just happens to be my day off. But I just found out that DH has a class that day, so I haven't decided if I'll drive or just watch it from my house.
There are two camps in my area. Those that are excited about it and may travel to see it, or those who think it's not a big deal and laugh at those who do think it's a big deal .
There's a lot of grumbling because the kids will be at school. Some parents plan to keep their kids home (?? Side eye). I'm hoping they make viewers and go outside - that's one of my most vivid memories of being in elementary school. Eclipses and space rocket launches from the playground.
I live somewhat close to an area where it is supposed to be one of the ideal locations. Hotel rooms are all booked, people are renting out their homes, schools are closed, and talk is that the place is going to be over run. I'll stay where I'm at and see what I can see.

Not in the path but the local science museum is around the corner from my office so I'm planning to pop over for their events. This reminds me that I need to double-check that DD's summer camp is planning for this.
We are also in the path of totality, and like you, akafred , people are going nuts. Tourism is exploding. Hopefully friends of ours from Virginia will make it down to view it with us.
H's university is expecting 15,000 visitors that day.
My area will get a partial eclipse (~80% obscured). I love all things space and science, so I ordered some eclipse glasses for the family. I'll be off work that day, so I was thinking of going for a picnic with the kids and watching the eclipse. I'm just hoping the weather is clear.
We'll get some partial eclipse - around 60%. And it looks like it won't happen until the evening around here, so I'll probably order some glasses and we'll check it out at home.
ETA: And by evening, I mean afternoon. Just did some more research and the first map I found was way off!

It's like 1:30 here. I was wondering where in the world you were! Lol

LOL I found a map that said something about 17:00 and got confused. No clue what that's talking about. Upon closer inspection, the local news said it's in the afternoon.

Speaking of random comments, let me take this moment to take an unsolicited stab at my MIL. You know how these things pop up on FB every once in awhile and everybody takes a stab at them?
Well, my MIL (a die hard Republican who is educated on some issues, but still believes everything she reads on the internet) commented on one where she complained that this was obviously a multiplication problem and indicative of how core curriculum was not teaching our children correct math.
Btw, while I was trying to find what she actually said on FB, I saw that someone tagged her in a video about how to clear a clogged toilet. Who needs friends...?
I live in Eclipse central. We are a quick drive from the 1 and 2 spots in the entire nation. There is no hotel or camp spot to rent anywhere. Motel 6 rooms were going for 1500 a night back in May. We have been warned to stock up on water, gas, and food a week before the event as they are forecasting shortages. Farmers by our friends house in Central Oregon only did 1 crop of hay this year vs 3 last year as they were going to make more money renting out dry camping spots. supertrooper1, your 6 hour drive down here may turn into 12...we could drive over to our friends in Central Oregon and watch from their yard which is in total path but I'm avoiding the roads at all cost that weekend. There is talk that Hwy 97 is going to be turned into a 1 lane hwy before and after.
The girl who is watching DD that day is 13 and I am going to ask if she can watch DD at her house. Her mom is a SAHM and I feel a little better to have the girls with an adult just in case all the worst case scenarios actually happen. Power outages, cell phone disruptions, traffic nightmares, fires (this is a very big concern with extreme fire danger).
DH and I both are working that day and other than dealing with all the craziness I really could care less about the eclipse.

186momx, the traffic is my biggest deterrent. On our trip last month, we ended up stuck in Portland in the middle of the day on a weekday, which should have been outside of rush hour. And sitting on those bridges when they're bouncing is no fun. So if it's bad on a regular day, I hate to see what it's like on the 21st. I had read an article that they're expecting people to drive that morning from Seattle and it will just be a nightmare. I thought about cutting over to Eastern Oregon, but I think that traffic will be just as bad. So I'll probably stay home and be happy with our 87% eclipse.
My SO has a bunch of family and friends who live in the path who we could stay with (he is from Central Oregon). But hell no to the traffic nightmare. And actually getting stuck having to stay with said family and friends...I am usually good for two hours with them, tops. Several days? Nightmare fuel. Plus I am freaked out a little about wildfires happening due to all those people camping and being stupid. It is so, so, so dry there. We were visiting SO's dad once when a fire started less than a mile away. It was rather terrifying.
We are in a partial eclipse area (~80%). I bought glasses for DH and I because we are both engineers and this is right up our nerdy alley. The peak is during school hours and I'm hoping DS's teachers will do something for it.
