sushi I had no idea you had lived in the Bahamas. I hope your family and friends there are safe.
I was never there full time. I spent summers and long school breaks there. My family is full time.
They're northern so likely quite safe now. A family member is an mp, though, so he'll be working hard with southern victims. In direct family we also have regional airline, marina, ferry service, environmental protection... we get around. But everyone is family.
can't remember who had sister but let me know if your sister needs anything. At the moment Nassau seems fine. Plus, they Hogg (lol at me) all the resources
Maho beach cam view of Irma as it hits St. Maarten (and destroys camera). link
Holy shit, thats terrifying. I saw somewhere (sorry i dont have a link) that the st maarten airport was destroyed.
It was. For reference, Maho Beach buts up to the end of the airport, so whatever you were seeing on the Maho cam was hitting St Juliana airport at the same time. ETA: You can see it better in this article, but the fence in the right side of the photo is the end of the runway. Maho Beach is where the yellow umbrellas are.
In my 7,000 person rural hometown in Massachusetts, you could dial up everyone using just four digits until the early 90s. I'm not sure how common that was in the United States, we might have been one of the last hold outs, as I know it was not the case for most of the neighboring towns. Fascinating that entire countries were able to operate like that for so long.
Party lines in America were from lassie days. And my childhood. Lol. But out islands aren't representative of country. @246baje experienced very different. She was the Manhattan to my Ozark
To this day, though, I think the whole country is 1 area code.
And lordy the power issues every day on my feed this summer... They used to this.

Its so sad to hear how bad they got it... st maarten is one of the most beautiful places ive ever been to.

The airport is gone? Shit. That is new too. I love St. Maarten and Maho beach still holds the signs of the destruction from 20 years ago. My heart breaks for the island and everyone there.
St. Maarten and Provo in Turks are so close to my heart. I pray for everyone in Provo. The island is completely flat and maybe 2 miles across from Grace Bay. I am praying for eveeyone.

That airport is great especially the warning signs of people getting blasted from the jets is great.
Sir Richard Branson is riding out Hurricane Irma in the wine cellar on his private island
Well, if there was a possibility of death in a crappy hurricane... this is how'd I'd want to go out. Drinking amazing wine, camping out in the wine cellar & doing insanely rich people stuff.

I've been thinking about what a circus the airport on Providenciales is even on a good day. I can't imagine what a mess it is trying to evacuate.

Lolol girl I had some Ozark-like days in st Vincent and St. Lucia I was telling a friend that in preschool I wrote on a slate and her eyes bulged. My husband said "uh in Barbados we had notebooks at that time" 🤣🤣
Oh,I believe you. But you mostly talk about Barbados days.
Did your 2 room school have an outhouse? I'm oddly nostalgic about these recollections of deprivation by American standards. (Not the poo part).
Plus what's wrong with reusable slate? My people may have killed that endangered turtle for soup (not my personal people: super environmentalists), but that milk bottle was reused to indicate a trap. Lol
Apparently in the last few minutes, the PM of Antigua and Barbuda spoke through a spotty radio connection and said 90% of buildings on Barbuda were demolished.
To get back on topic... Sorry for the diversion. I needed it.
We do have treaties about disasters with most carib. I don't know if that's only mil or applies to ngo as well. But that may help you if wanting to contribute in coming weeks. Canada is part of that too. (Plug for why Cuban relations are important. I don't think they're part of this) So that may help with donations and anxiety.
In the meantime, forget all other storms. I'm back for fl stuff. (And carib love)
Thanks for the clarification. By "this" I don't think they're in whatever treaties I vaguely know of with US carib response. They may have individual with rest of carib.
I have zero idea about tax exemptions, but I'd sadly assume contributing to a Cuban org is not recognized like Canadian.
If that matters and Cuba is hit I'd donate to a Canadian org.
I know nothing about finance and little about international relations. But ask me about hurricane straps!
Thank you for the update on their tragic situation. Where can I donate to help? I can't imagine the scope of their loss.
No information has come out yet. I'll tweet the Antigua and Barbuda NY office page.
Thank you. Please let us know. I'm afraid relief for them will be overlooked in the scope of this storm and it sounds like they will specifically need help.
My family has been without power since 10am. Irma wiped out Culebra. A family friend tried to evacuate her apartment but it was too late and the winds were too high.
My friends who lives in St Thomas made it thru (and amazingly never lost cell service) but their "hurricane house" (which is built to withstand 200 mph winds) did not make it.
ETA: Irma is a real bitch not to be messed with. I pray for all of you down south who are in her path.
This is about immediate possible responses to Irma in Puerto Rico and possibly the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its not a commentary, it has PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT DIRECT ASSISTANCE.
DISCLAIMER: I am not an employee nor in any way a representive of Americares, this information has not been officially issued nor endorsed by that charity, and all opinions and implications of this post are entirely my own personal responsibility.
There are many problems with the charity industrial complex, but in the face of a massive disaster on islands its essential to connect with the people who are already there, because if the worst case happens access afterwards will be severely limited, as I learned responding to the 2010 Port-Au-Prince earthquake with Mutual Aid Disaster Relief In Haiti.
After Superstorm Sandy, the Connecticut based charity Americares provided a three month grant for our spontaneous, activist work, People's Relief, alongside Occupy Sandy and the Action Center of Far Rockaway, doing direct community organizing and dispatching of medical volunteers in the hardest hit areas of New York City, mostly low income, African American, and immigrant communities in Coney Island and the Rockaways. I found them, unlike the American Red Cross, to be very responsive to local needs when we assessed them.
I just got off the phone with their disaster team coordinator here in Connecticut. They have a disaster response team on the ground in Puerto Rico right now, having landed in San Juan yesterday. This team will be doing assessments and coordinating direct medical care if necessary after Irma. If you want to donate financially, I believe this is a better way to directly help people there than the American Red Cross.
IF YOU ARE IN PUERTO RICO AND HAVE FIRST AID OR MEDICAL TRAINING OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES, who is not already engaged in the official response, they may be able to put you to work, after the storm and their assessment.
IF YOU ARE INVOLVED IN GRASSROOTS SELF ORGANIZED COMMUNITY RESPONSES IN PUERTO RICO OR THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, OR ELSEWHERE, OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS, getting in touch with their assessment team may be a great way to access supplies and support.
IF YOU ARE IN THE CONTINENTAL U.S. AND HAVE MEDICAL TRAINING, INCLUDING STREET MEDICS, AND CAN MAKE AT LEAST A TWO WEEK COMMITMENT IF CALLED, they MAY be able to use you in relief and recovery efforts.
Personal Message me and I can put you in touch with the stateside coordinator of their team. He has given me his personal phone number so he can be reached after office hours. Please, only PM if you are a person who wants to directly physically help in the Caribbean. There is no guarantee they will or can use you, but they are willing to compile a roster of available, on call volunteers. SHARE WIDELY."
Palm Beach County issued a statement that demand for fuel is outstripping fuel supply and are advising residents to shelter within the county. MH and I were able to fill both of our cars today, but we aren't going anywhere.

Culebra was my absolute favorite part of PR....we loved the tiny, beautiful little island and beaches.
