My family has been without power since 10am. Irma wiped out Culebra. A family friend tried to evacuate her apartment but it was too late and the winds were too high.
The euro, which is generally one of the more accurate models, is starting to jog west again.
Ugh. It looks like the NHC/NOAA hasn't really updated their track to reflect that yet. I think it was European that predicted the Harvey path most closely.
Either way FL is going to get slammed. Western side of the storm = more tornados. Eastern = stronger winds generally. I'm hoping if banks right sooner, but seeming less likely. Personally, I'd rather it not come up through the panhandle because we live in Atlanta and then it would be coming straight for us and the tree situation and sewer situation here ain't great for hurricane-force winds and rain. Then again my dad lives in Jupiter and I don't wish it on him either. Sucks no matter what.

Tree at my uncle's home.
Hoping your family and family friend are okay.
Thank you, as far as I know, they are okay. Some structural damage, but physically those we've heard from are okay. Still waiting to hear from my dad's side of the family as they have fewer resources than my mom's side.

We honeymooned in Antigua. That island and Barbuda are so beautiful and hold a special place in my heart. Looking at the pictures is devastating. I hope the death toll doesn't rise.
Ditto location and refusal to evacuate, but it's my H's grandparents. They lost everything 5 or so years ago, but the grandpa is in terrible health and cannot travel. I just pray they stay safe and dry.
Oh my goodness. This is just so heartbreaking. My thoughts are with those of you who have family and friends affected, and the people of these islands.

It depends on which hemisphere you're in.
In the northern hemisphere, its usually the eastern side that gets tornadoes.
ETA - it also depends on which way the storm is headed. It's the right side of the storm that is the worst. So if it's headed west, the north is the side that gets the worst winds and thus the tornadoes. And if it's headed north, it's the east.
The ILs are still refusing to evacuate, they live around Melbourne.
DH's uncle, wife, and 90yo wife's father also refuse to evacuate and they live in Melbourne too. I'm concerned for them but they think they will be ok
BF's sister and family live in Indialantic near Melbourne and also, so far, say they're going to stay. Luckily, his parents who also live there are in Montana for the summer.

I served Peace Corps in the Eastern Caribbean (albeit many years ago) and am so upset to see how badly Barbuda and St. Maarten have been affected. This is terrible.
We are watching the local Antigua news and they are interviewing Barbudans who are saying that if the eye had come any later people would have been killed because people were literally trying to tie themselves to their homes with ropes to avoid blowing away. Then during the eye people were able to move to more secure structures.

Holy shit, @246baje. Those photos are breathtaking. How incredibly awful.
Can anyone in/near Tampa share their plans for this? I have a friend/coworker who recently moved to Tampa and she's never been through anything like this before. She's not sure what she and her husband plan to do at this point, but I can tell she's scared.
